PARIJAAT – The Celestial Flower

Taoshobuddha

The word Taoshobuddha comes from three words,

‘tao,’ ‘sho,’ and ‘Buddha’. The word Tao was coined
by the Chinese master, Lau Tzu. It means, that
which is and cannot be put into words. It is unknown
and unknowable. It can only be experienced and not
expressed in words. Its magnanimity cannot be
condensed into finiteness. The word Sho implies,
that which is vast like the sky and deep like an
ocean and carries within its womb a treasure. It
Zalso means one on whom the existence showers its
blessings. And lastly the word Buddha, implies the
Enlightened One; one who has arrived home.

Thus, Taoshobuddha implies one who is existential,

on whom the existence showers its blessings and
one who has arrived ho
home. The Enlightened One!

The Spiritual Significance

of Flowers

The Mother

Gentle and lovely, flowers share

their beauty with us and bring us a touch of
eternal things. According to the Mother, each
variety of flowers has its own special quality and
meaning. By establishing an inner contact with
the flower, this meaning can be known.

Flowers speak to us when we know how to listen

to them, the Mother said. It is a subtle and
fragrant language. As if to provide a key to this

PARIJAAT – The Celestial Flower

Preface

There is no doubt that a garden looks

empty without Parijaat. It contributes to
the distinctive beauty of a garden.

Flowers manifest psychic prayer! These are

the offering of the plant unto the Divine
Altar!

Once again tremendous joy

overflows as I am here to speak something on
the flower essence and significance of flowers
with particular reference to this celestial flower
PARIJAAT.

Mystical Essence Series Page 16

PARIJAAT – The Celestial Flower

Flower is an expression love and light. The

expression of love is not only the inherent
quality of human. However in animal and plant
kingdom this expression of love is far less
distorted. In plants kingdom love expresses in
its sublime and sacred form as beauty and
fragrance. An expression of Ishk-E-Haquiqi!

Look at the flowers and the trees. When sun

sets and there pervades serenity all around sit
down for a moment and commune with nature.
In those moments of sojourn you will feel rising
from the earth, from below the roots of the tree
and mounting upward and coursing through
their fibers up to the highest outstretching
branches an aspiration of intense love and
longing.

Such is the longing and aspiration for something

that brings light and gives happiness. The light
is no more and plants wish to have once again.
There is a yearning so pure and intense that if
you can feel the movement in the trees, your
own being too will rise in an ardent prayer for
the peace, light and love that remains
unmanifest here.

Observe the numerous trees and plants growing

and struggling to get the glimpse of light in a
dense forest. The plants and tress twist and try
Mystical Essence Series Page 17

in a hundred possible ways just to be in the sun.

This is precisely the feeling of aspiration in the
physical – an urge, the movement and the push
towards light. Light symbolizes the material
aspect of the Divine and the sun represents the
Supreme Consciousness under material
conditions.

Plants have felt it distinctly in their own simple

and subtle way. Such aspiration is intense, only
if you are aware of it.

Dutch painter Vincent Van Goah used to paint

trees tall rising towards sky. Whenever anyone
asked about this he used to say:

‘What can I do such is the aspiration of the

plants and trees towards light, stars and
the sky.’

It is not certain whether plants make an effort

or it is spontaneous. However in any case, it has
an aspiration. Plants grow because they aspire
for light, sun, and open air.

In the dense forest this aspirations exists as

competition. You will observe very clearly that
there is a sort of competition among plants to
pass each other and reach light and open air
above. It is indeed spectacular to be a witness
Mystical Essence Series Page 18
PARIJAAT – The Celestial Flower

to this. Plants cannot grow without light so they

aspire for light. Man on the contrary does not
seem to bother for light for his inner growth.

Keep the flowers as long as these are fresh. And

when they are no longer fresh, return them to
mother earth that has given us such bloom
otherwise the earth will become poor and loose
its blossoming capability.

Be receptive like flowers. Flowers are happy

when loved. Flowers blossom in light.
Blossoming of the flower is an explosion of bliss
and harmony. Flowers symbolize psychic
consciousness that expresses only through
silence and beauty.

Therefore the love of flowers is a valuable help

to find and unite with the psychic because
flowers are expression of the psychic. Loving
flowers draws one by psychic vibrations and
consequently by psychic in one’s own self.

Remember when you are receptive to the

psychic vibration that puts you in an intimate
contact with the psychic in yourself. The beauty
of the flower too works as a means by nature to
awaken the attraction for the psychic in human
beings. The beauty and fragrance of a flower
has an aura of varying radius.
Mystical Essence Series Page 19
PARIJAAT – The Celestial Flower

When you are in conscious contact with your

psychic then you become aware of an
impersonal psychic behind the entire creation. It
is through this you can enter into contact with
flowers and know the psychic prayer flowers
represent.

When the psychic manifest through a flower it

represents a WORDLESS PRAYER. It is the
thankfulness of the flowers towards the DIVINE!

Whenever a mystic gives a flower it is a

response to the aspiration arising from the inner
depths of your being.

Be a flowerlike because being a flowerlike

implies: openness, frankness, equality,
generosity, and the kind….

A flower is open to all that surrounds it: nature,

light, the rays of the sun, the wind etc. The
flower exerts a spontaneous influence on all that
surrounds it. Flowers radiate beauty and bliss.

Flower is frank. It hides nothing of its beauty as

it allows the beauty to flow naturally out of it.
All that is within in its depth the flower allows
springing forth for everyone who is vulnerable
and open to the beauty.

Mystical Essence Series Page 20

PARIJAAT – The Celestial Flower

The generosity, tenderness, mysterious beauty

all these flowers share with those open to such
things The presence of flowers fills us with joy
and cheerfulness.

Happy indeed is he who can exchange his

qualities with the real qualities that flowers
manifest.

Try to cultivate in yourself the inherent qualities

of flowers and allow the life to move on a new
voyage. Like the flowers allow your inner
fragrance be the subtlest offering to the Divine

This is the aspiration that goes on repeating

itself untiringly in many ways sharing my being,
my presence as an offering at the Divine Altar in
myriad ways.

Once again I am thankful to my friend Satender

Khanna who one day asked me to say
something on Parijaat flower, its mythological
background, significance etc. It was indeed an
enquiry from a seeker. The outcome of this
enquiry is this Title Parijaat – the Celestial
Flower.

Like him there are many others who anxiously

wait for my writings on any subject because

they know the work will be profound and

express Divinity.

PARIJAAT – The Celestial Flower

Introduction

‘Parijat’ is also known as

‘Harsinghar’ in Hindi and ‘Shefali’ in Bengali.
It bears the botanical name of Nycatanthes
Arbortristis.

Its botanical name comes from two separate

words. Nyctanthes means ‘night flowers’ and
Arbortristis mean ‘The sad tree’ or ‘The tree
of sorrow’.

Flowers blossom in the night and the air is filled

with the sweet fragrance of the bloom. The tree
Mystical Essence Series Page 23
PARIJAAT – The Celestial Flower

is sometimes called the ‘tree of sorrow’, because

the flowers lose their brightness during daytime.

The flowers can be used as a source of yellow

dye for clothing.

The flower is the official flower of the state of

West Bengal, India, and for Kanchanaburi.

In the early morning it has dropped its flowers,

the tree rather looks sad.

The flower is commonly known as:

1. Night-flowering Jasmine
2. Coral Jasmine
3. Parijat (also spelled Paarijat or Paarijaata)
4. Harsinghar
5. Shephali
6. Maramalli or Pavazha malli in Tamil (Also
spelled pavaza malli or pavala malli)
7. Aspiration as it was called by the Mother from
Pondicherry

‘Parijat’ is also considered to be a divine tree. In

the Poems of Rabindranath Tagore there are
descriptions about Parijat Flowers. In Bengal
Parijaat flowers mark the arrival of Goddess
Durga.

PARIJAAT – The Celestial Flower

Flower lovers wake up in the early morning to

collect the Parijaat flowers and generally place
them in a flat dish to make their rooms fresh
and fragrant.

It is a hardy large shrub or small tree

sometimes reaching a height of 30 feet. Its bark
is green or grey to greenish-white in color and a
bit rough in texture. It has a thick branching
structure with green oval-shaped leaves.

Its 4 to 8 flower petals are arranged about a

vibrant orange tube in a pinwheel pattern.
These highly fragrant flowers open at night
perfuming the surrounding area with an
intensely sweet floral aroma.

The morning following the night bloom, the

flowers fall on the earth carpeting it with their
fragile beauty. In the ancient times sages and
seers noted quality of individual plants and in
order to teach the people to closely observe
their life cycles they created beautiful stories.

In India, Parijat grows in the outer Himalayas at

the height of about 1400 meters, and are found
in tracts of Jammu & Kashmir, Nepal to East of
Assam, Bengal, Tripura extended through the
Central region up to Godavari in the South.
