RIBBONS AND CRAFTS

FELT FLOWER TUTORIAL

This project is ideal for using up your felt scraps and pieces of
left-over embroidery floss.

The flower has been especially created by Ribbons and

Crafts for the book „Sewing Clothes Kids Love“ from Nancy
Langdon/Sabine Pollehn, and is a great fit for their colourful,
original, yet comfortable designs.
Of course it can also be a wonderful addition to any „grown-
up“ dress, scarf, top or bag!

Have fun pulling together your own colour schemes for this
flower, fitting the felt you may already have, or the outfit you
want to accessorize!

MATERIALS

1. Felt in three colours. For the largest flower you‘ll need a

piece of about 10x10 centimeters. We recommend 2mm
felt for the 2 bigger flowers and 1 mm felt for the smallest
flower and the leaves.
2. Embroidery floss in two to three colours that match the
felt.
3. Doublesided satin ribbon. 10mm wide,and approx 50 cm
long. We used the Orange/Hot Pink 10 mm ribbon from
Ribbons and Crafts.
4. Scissors, thread, needles

DESCRIPTION
1. Print this page, and cut out all the pieces once.
2. Pin the paper pieces on the felt you selected and cut them out. Figure 1 and 2
out of on colour, thicker felt, figure 3 out of a contrasting colour. Use a matching
kind of green or brown for the pieces numbered 4 and 5.
3. Now it‘s time for the decoration of figure number 2. Choose two colours of
embroidery floss to create the stitches. We have used three-threaded floss, which
meant we had to split the standard six-threaded floss in two. First do the stitches
marked with dotted lines. Put in the needle from the back to the front, approx.
1,5 centimeters away from the centre of the flower. Pass the thread between
two petals to the backside again and finish the stitch by putting the needle
through to the front. Repeat until the thread has run between all petals.
4. Now, put the middle sized felt flower on top of the large one and secure with a
few stitches (you can use normal sewing thread here).
5. Next comes the ribbon flower out of double-sided 10mm ribbon. Page three of
this tutorial explains how it is done. Make sure the ribbon flower has approx the
same diameter as the smallest felt flower (the one indicated above with „3“).
Secure the finished ribbon flower on the smallest felt flower.
6. Put the smallest felt flower on top of the two larger ones and secure all three lay-
ers tightly with the button or pearls you chose, creating the heart of the ribbon
flower at the same time.
7. Now , the two leaves are individually stitched to the backside of the largest flo-
wer, in a way that the stitches are covered by the middle layer. It is nice to add
some embroidery detail to the leaves as well: See the cover picture for an
example.
8. To finish, put a brooch pin on the back of the completed flower (with needle and
thread or with glue. Make sure it is attached somewhat above the centre.

RIBBON FLOWER

DESCRIPTION
1. Keep the ribbon‘s end in your right hand, between thumb and forefinger. Take
the ribbon with your left hand and make a loop to the right. Turn the work one
quarter and hold between thumb and forefinger of your right hand again. Re-
peat this, and secure the two loops with a couple of stitches. These steps are il-
lustrated within the first row of pictures above.
2. Add two more loops the same way. You will end up with four loops in a cross form
(first picture of the second row). Pay attention, that the loops are of equal size.
Secure with a couple of stitches.
3. Repeat the whole procedure again, creating a second layer of loops inside the
first layer.
4. Secure with some stitches. Bring the ribbon‘s end that lies inside the flower
through one of the loops and cut it in such a way that you cannot see it anymo-
re. You can seal the end with a lighter if you like—but be careful! The other end
of the ribbon is at the back—cut this one so short, it cannot be seen from the
front.
5. Ready! The decoration of the flower‘s heart is done while attaching it to the
three-layered felt flower (see step 6 on page 2). Of course, if you want to make a
stand-alone ribbon flower, you can add the button/pearls right-away.
