ON COMPLETION OF THIS ASSIGNMENT YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO

DEMONSTRATE THE FOLLOWING LEARNING OUTCOMES:

 ANALYZE THE OPERATION OF SYNCHRONOUS DIGITAL

SYSTEMS

 SYNTHESIZE A SYCHRONOUS DIGITAL SYSTEM

 DESIGN ARITHMETIC CIRCUIT TO MEETA SPECIFICATION

AND DETERMINE THE PROPAGATION DELAY

This assignment will require you to design and implement a synchronous digital system.

a. Design a state diagram based on a written description of the operation of the

system.

b. Obtain the logic diagram from the state diagram.

c. Implement the logic diagram using MULTISIM.

d. Verify the results with the module lecturer.

e. Analyze the operation of the logic circuit and add one or more innovations of your choice
to enhance the system operation.

f. Implement the hardware of the simulated circuit.

g. Test and demonstrate the functioning of the digital system in the lab.

OBEJECTIVE:

The objective of this assignment is to create a LED pong game from a digital circuit that
would provide the significance of up and down ball movement. A Pong is a sport that
represents another term for table tennis in which two or four players are hitting a hollow,
lightweight back and forth using rackets or paddles, where the game takes place on a hard
table divided by the net

APPLICATION:

The digital LED pong circuit is mainly used for the purpose of games, fun, and
enjoyment for all ages that are into these recreational activities. They provide visual
indications via the movement of light in the LED. In a more advanced application, this
digital LED pong game is being applied in a variety of video game consoles that
incorporates the use of electronic paddles.

READ THE GAME INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY BEFORE YOU START.

CIRCUITS THAT DO NOT WORK WITHIN THE RULES SPECIFIED WILL
NOT RECEIVE FULL CREDIT.

DESIGN 1:

Design a circuit that will play LED Pong in the following fashion. Two players are
assigned pushbuttons. Two columns of LED’s will be the game board. A lit LED
represents the “ball”; as the “ball” is traveling, one LED will deactivate and another will
activate. Only one light is lit at any given time. One of the players hits his/her pushbutton
to “serve” the ball and begin the game. The ball travels up one column and down the
other as in Figure 1. The second player must hit his/her pushbutton to return it but can
only do so when the ball is in the lowest position of the column. If the player hits the
pushbutton at the correct time, the ball returns up the column and back toward the first
player; however, if the returning player hits the button either after or anytime before the
last LED is lit, the game resets and the winning player serves. Note that if a server tries to
re-serve before the ball reaches the other player; it should have no effect on the circuit.

To do this, you may use a shift register, a counter, or some combination of these. You
will also need your clock divider module to set the game speed.

DESIGN 2:

You are welcome to design your own innovations to enhance the LED Pong.
