1. A car travels from X to Y and then from Y 3. A boat sails North at 3ms-1. A wind
to Z as shown. blows from the West to the East at
4ms-1.

Which of the following vectors

represents the resultant direction of the
boat?
A 7ms-1

B
5ms-1

C
It takes one hour to travel from X to Y. It 5ms-1
also takes one hour to travel from Y to Z.
Which roe in the following table shows the
magnitudes of the displacement, average D 5ms-1
speed and the average velocity for the
completed journey?
Displacement Average Average E

scalars and vectors.
D 70 70 50
E 50 70 25 I Scalars have direction only

II Vectors have both size and direction

(a) State the difference between speed and velocity. 1
(b) During a tall ships race, a ship called the Mir passes a marker buoy X and sails due
West(270). It sails on this course for 30 minutes at a speed of 10kmh-1, then
changes course to 20o West of North(340). The Mir continues on this new course
for 1.5 hours at a speed of 8.0kmh-1 until it passes marker buoy Y.

(i) Show that the Mir travels a total distance of 17km between marker buoys X 2
and Y.
(ii) By scale drawing or otherwise, find the displacement from marker buoy X
to marker buoy Y. 2
(iii) Calculate the average velocity, in kmh-1, of the mir between marker buoys
X and Y. 2
(c) A second ship, the Leeuvin, passes marker buoy X 15 minutes after the Mir and
sails directly for marker buoy Y at a speed of 7.5kmh-1.

Show by calculation which ship first passes marker buoy Y. 2

6. A cyclist took part in a cross country race. She travelled 20 000m North across rough Marks
terrain after which she came to a country road which took her on a bearing of 120°
for 20 000m to the finishing line.

The total journey time was 1 hour 15 minutes.

(a) By scale drawing, or otherwise, calculate the displacement, from the
starting point, of the cyclist at the end of the race. 3
(b) Calculate the average speed of the cyclist during the race 2
(c) Calculate the average velocity of the cyclist. 2
