Assignment

Instructions:
There are 3 case studies in which you should use the appropriate methods to analyze the data given. In
each case, try to explore as much as you can from the data. The managerial questions are guidelines.
Please try to make comments for the findings and recommendations.
You have to form a group of 3 or 4 people within your class and work in team. You must write up the
formal report in which for each case study, you should at least present the following parts:
- The summary of the context of the case study.
- Descriptive statistics
- Formal analysis (Confidence interval or hypothesis testing, except case study 1).
- Discussions
- Recommendations
The deadline for submission of the report (hard copy) is on the day of the final exam of the course. The
representative of the class will collect all the reports of all groups and send to me through the Faculty of
Basic Sciences (Building B, level 2).

Case Study 1: National Health Care Association

The National Health Care Association is concerned about the shortage of nurses the health care
profession is projecting for the future. To learn the current degree of job satisfaction among nurses, the
association sponsored a study of hospital nurses throughout the country. As part of this study, 50 nurses
in the sample indicated their degree of satisfaction with their work, their pay and their opportunities for
promotion. Each of the three aspects of satisfaction was measured on a scale from 0 to 100, with larger
values indicating higher degrees of satisfaction. The data collected also showed the type of hospital
employing the nurses. Data file named “Health”.

Managerial Report:
Use methods of descriptive statistics to summarize the data. Present the summaries that will be
beneficial in communicating the results to others. Discuss your finding. Specifically, comment on the
following questions:
1. On the basic of entire data set and three job satisfaction variables, what aspect of the job is most
satisfying for the nurses? What appears to be the least satisfying? In what area(s), if any, do you
feel improvements should be made? Discuss.
2. On the basic of descriptive measures of variability, what measure of fob satisfaction appears to
generate the greatest difference opinion among the nurses? Explain.
3. What can be learned about the types of hospitals? Does any particular type of hospital seem to
have better level of job satisfaction than the other types? Do your results suggest any
recommendations for learning about and improving job satisfaction? Discuss.
4. What additional descriptive statistics and insights can you use to learn about and possibly
improve job satisfaction?

Case study 2: Gulf Real Estate Properties

Gulf Real Estate Properties, Inc., is a real estate firm located in southwestern Florida. The company
monitors condominium sales by collecting data on location, list price, sale price and number of days it
talked to sale each unit. Each condominium is classified as Guft View if it located directly on the Gulf of
Mexico or no Gulf View if it is located on the bay or golf course, near but not on the Gulf. Sample data
from the Multiple Listing Service in Naples, Florida, provides recent sales data for 40 Gulf View
condominium and 18 No Gulf View condominium. (The data file “GulfProp” is attached. Prices are in
thousands of dollars).

Managerial Report:
1. Use appropriate descriptive statistics to summarize each of the three variables for the 40 Gulf
View condominium and 18 No Gulf View condominium.
2. Compare your summary results. Discuss any specific statistical results that would help a real
estate agent understand the condominium market.
3. Develop 95% CI estimate of the population mean sales price and population mean number of
days to sell for both kinds of condominium. Interpret your results.
4. Assume a branch manager requested estimates of the mean selling price of Gulf View
condominiums with the margin of error of $40,000 and the mean selling price of No Gulf View
condominiums with the margin of error of $15,000. Using 95% confidence, how large should
the sample size be?
5. Gulf Real Estate Properties just signed contracts for two new listing: a Gulf View condominium
with a list price of $589,000 and a No Gulf View condominium with a list price of $285,000.
What is your estimate of the final selling price and number of days required to sell each of these
units?

Case Study 3: Par, Inc.

Par, Inc., is a major manufacturer of golf equipments. Management believes that Par’s market share
could be increased with the introduction of a cut-resistant, longer-lasting golf ball. Therefore, the
research group at Par has been investigating a new golf ball coating designed to resist cuts and provide a
more durable golf. The tests with the coating have been promising.
One of the researchers voiced concern about the effect of the new coating on driving distances. Par
would like the new cut-resistant ball to offer driving distances comparable to those of the current-model
golf ball. To compare the driving distances for the two balls, 40 balls of both the new and current
models were subjected to distance tests. The testing was performed with a mechanical hitting machine
so that any difference between the mean distanced for the two models could be attributed to a difference
in the two models. The results of the tests, with distances measured to the nearest yard, follow. These
data are available on the excel file “Golf”.

Managerial Report
1. Formulate and present the rationale for the hypothesis test that par could use to compare the
driving distances of the current and new golf balls.
2. Analyze the data to provide the hypothesis testing conclusion. What is the p-value for the test?
What is your recommendation for Par, Inc.?
3. Provide descriptive statistical summaries of the data for each model.
4. What is the 95% confidence interval for the population mean of each model, and what is the 95%
Confidance Interval for the difference between the means of the two populations?
