U.S. Employment Trends Report
November 2010
Contents
Executive Summary
Key highlights from this month’s report p. 1
About
Information on the Report and Simply Hired p. 14
• First automotive hiring in years. The automotive industry showed its first sign of life
post-recession, with job openings growing 19.8% (a 121.5% improvement from November
2009). Two major US auto companies, General Motors and Chrysler, recently announced
plans to hire by the thousands in coming months. GM already listed 77 jobs in Detroit
before the month end.
• Finance and accounting hiring strong. Financial specialists and accountants continued to
be in demand, showing a 41.8% growth in job openings. “While there’s been an increase
in finance and accounting jobs this month, many of these job openings are in sectors
outside the financial services industry,” said Gautam Godhwani, CEO of SimplyHired.com.
“It’s clear that the financial services industry still has a way to go before it fully recovers.”
• Positive seasonal hiring effects continue. With holiday shopping well underway,
seasonal hiring continued to boost the national job market. Job openings for retail
salespersons increased 92.9%, and with 2,158 job openings, UPS became the third top
hiring company nationwide.
• Military hiring drops. Job openings for military personnel decreased -23.5% in
November, coinciding with an industry-wide decrease of -45%. These decreases reflect
a slowing in military recruitment around year end, similar to the slowing in other
industries.

• Least competitive metros hold steady. While most metros shifted ranks in this month’s job
competition list, the nine least competitive maintained their positions. Washington, DC; West
Palm Beach; Boston; Baltimore; Milwaukee; Oklahoma City; Minneapolis & St. Paul; Denver; and
San Francisco were still the best metros for job seekers, each with a 2:1 or 1:1 unemployment ratio.

• Retail hiring continues to rise. Demand for retail salespersons continued its upward trend as
more and more companies prepare for the holiday season. Retail job openings almost doubled,
growing a considerable 92.9% from October.
• Hiring low in Orlando. The fifth most competitive metro for job seekers, Orlando had only three
companies with more than 50 job openings this month: two in healthcare, and one in fast food
service. This trend suggests that Orlando job competition is due to a low number of available jobs
in the area.

trends in the United States. These findings are based on monthly job seeker activity
on SimplyHired.com, which aggregates millions of listings from over 30,000 employ-

projected from recent historical data. Data may not be representative of all industries,
occupations and/or metro areas. “Metropolitan Areas” in this report are the 50 most
populous in the U.S., as ranked by the Nielsen Company’s Designated Market Area (DMA)
list. “Occupation Categories” are derived from the Department of Labor’s O*NET database.
