Learning for Life

Our pupils enjoy their learning. We oer a broad and balanced
curriculum in an environment where self-discipline and
respect for themselves and others are the norm.
Within this nurturing culture, our pupils ourish and quickly
develop a wide range of life-enhancing skills and interests.

Broad and Balanced Curriculum

An Exciting Journey

Fabulous Facilities

Our varied curriculum captures the

attention of our pupils, stimulating and
maintaining their interest. It educates
and motivates.

We want our children to love every

moment of their time at Roysia. However,
we understand that we are just one stage
in our pupils educational journey.
Therefore, in order to promote a seamless
and stress-free transition between schools
we are delighted to welcome prospective
pupils and parents at any time. Similarly,
we do all that we can to ensure that our
Year 8 pupils are well prepared for the
move to their Upper School.

Our children have the best of both worlds.

They enjoy the benets of a calm and
quiet working environment in light and
airy classrooms alongside the use of some
excellent specialist facilities.

A wide range of academic subjects provide

a solid educational grounding alongside
sensitive attention to each childs spiritual,
moral, social and cultural needs.
No aspect of learning is forgotten. Pupils
are encouraged to become more selfaware, to manage their feelings and to
develop their social skills. We aim to
produce well-balanced, sympathetic and
highly motivated young people.

By the time pupils

leave the school, they
are very well prepared
for the next stage in
their education and
later life.
Ofsted

Well-equipped science laboratories, two

ICT suites, a ne music/drama studio, a
technology workshop, a food technology
room, a gymnasium with changing rooms
and a spacious library are amongst the
facilities we oer.
We are similarly proud of our large playing
elds, hard play area, outside classroom
and fenced environmental area.

The school has

been so good at
supporting not
just my child but
also me.

Working Together
A childs school days should be amongst the happiest of their
life. Therefore, it is vital that school and home work together
to make them as fullling as possible.
Roysia pupils
influence the schools
development because
staff seek their views
and listen to their
opinions.

Roysia prides itself on its caring, nurturing ethos and its

uninching desire to work with pupils and families to achieve
the best for every child and every family.

Ofsted

Teamwork

Communication

Caring

Roysia celebrates success but also teaches

pupils how to cope with failure. A variety
of sporting, academic and artistic
competitions provide teams and
individuals with a chance to engage with
the realities of competitive life.

At Roysia we feel that good

communication is essential for a happy
working relationship with pupils and
parents. Consequently, we use a variety
of channels in order to give and receive
information. Personal consultation,
text, letter, online and weekly diaries
are amongst those regularly used. Having
listened to your concerns, we try our best
to address these in a clear, timely and
accurate manner. If we fail, then we try
to change and improve until we succeed.

At Roysia, we listen. Every childs voice is

heard and we try our utmost to address
the needs expressed by each individual. As
a small, caring school most sta know the
names of every child in the school not
something found in many schools but
indicative of the close understanding we
have of our children.

Each pupil belongs to one of three

Houses. Thus, in an atmosphere of fun
and enjoyment, everyone is encouraged
to join in, make an eort for the good of
their team and to recognise the success
of individuals.
As a member of the Royston Schools
Academy Trust Roysia extends this notion
of team work further by working closely
with a group of local schools. By sharing
ideas, resources and teaching expertise
Roysia provides an excellent education.

Form tutors, year leaders and subject

tutors are ably assisted by teaching
assistants and support sta. Similarly,
learning mentors and pupils themselves
are inspirational in their support of one
another. At Roysia, we care for each other.

Everyone an Individual
We are privileged to work with young people. We can help to
develop their characters, support their interests and
encourage their enthusiasms. We are instrumental in guiding
their growth. However, we can only do this by understanding
the needs of each child and ensuring that our school delivers
what they need.

Potential

Personalised

Flexibility

Our team of experienced teachers can

assess quickly the skills and abilities of
each individual. In so doing, they give
them every opportunity to full their
potential. Gifted and talented children
nd that they are appropriately challenged
and encouraged to make the most of their
gifts. However, those pupils who struggle
with some aspects of their learning are
supported in a variety of dierent ways,
targeted to meet their specic needs.

We are condent that your children will

be happy at Roysia because our aim is
to make them feel comfortable and
accepted. Small class sizes mean that
teachers get to know their pupils
quickly, as do the other children.

All schools have timetables, routines and

rules and we are no exception. They help
children with self-discipline and with life
skills and are an essential element of a
well-organised and fair establishment.
However, sta are encouraged to use
discretion, exibility and wisdom when
applying rules. We understand the
circumstances and needs of each child
and aim to deal with situations fairly and
sensitively. If any pupils are experiencing
diculties, we want to support them and
help them through rough patches. We
are keen to talk to pupils and parents to
resolve issues as quickly as possible.

Similarly, our Merit system, which

rewards good work and behaviour,
is highly prized by all pupils. Teachers
recognise and reward the eorts of
all, regardless of ability.

I didnt know
anyone when I came
here but I made friends
really quickly.

Roysias care,
guidance and support
are outstanding because
of the detailed attention
that the school pays to
the needs of all
individuals.

Learning for everyone

We believe everyone should have an equal opportunity to learn so we work hard to make
sure everyone is included in whatever teaching we oer.
Every child has a right to succeed and we know that each child has valuable strengths to celebrate and share, so
we recognise a wide range of abilities; academic, sporting, musical, artistic and social.
Roysia Middle School takes every opportunity to celebrate the successes of our children both within school and
in their personal pursuits out of school hours. We recognise the importance of partnership with parents and
pupils and encourage strong working and caring relationships. We regularly hold special assemblies and display
work and photographs around the school.
We work closely with all pupils with additional needs and their parents/carers to extend their capabilities and
help them reach their potential.
Ofsted deemed our provision to be good and commented, Pupils with special educational needs make good
progress in lessons. Informative individual education plans help teachers plan their work well for these pupils.
All lessons and activities are planned by our highly skilled teachers to challenge and extend the thinking of all
pupils. Eective dierentiation is used to allow everyone to be equally stimulated to apply themselves to their
learning. All pupils are encouraged to be the best they can be, challenge themselves and overcome barriers with
support.
We teach our children a range of learning strategies and encourage them to discuss their thinking and learning as
part of everyday procedure, nurturing understanding, building motivation, promoting choice and developing
independence. This in turn leads to good progress for all and in many cases pupils exceed their own
expectations.

Pupil Safety
Admissions
Roysia School acts within the Admissions Policy determined by Hertfordshire Education
Authority and our school governors contribute annually to the Authoritys consultation
process.

Safeguarding and child protection

The school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young
people and expects all sta and volunteers to share this commitment.
Roysia School has a Child Protection policy and a copy of the Hertfordshire Area Child Protection procedures,
both of which are available for parents/carers to see.
The Headteacher, Miss Z Linington, is the Designated Senior Person (DSP) for Child Protection and Mr I Wheeler
is the Deputy DSP. They will be happy to discuss any questions or concerns parents/carers may have about Child
Protection policies and practice.
The school holds a Freedom of Information Act notice giving parents details of how data is stored and
processed in school and its use by other bodies.
E-SAFETY An essential part of our ICT teaching is to ensure all pupils understand the risks associated with
communicating online and can describe some safe and responsible strategies/rules to follow to help minimise or
respond to risks. We also have our own anti bullying email service ash@roysia.herts.sch.uk where any pupil
can e-mail their concerns anonymously and be guaranteed a response.

Getting to school and home again

The vast majority of our pupils walk to school each day or ride their bikes or scooters which
they can leave in our bike-shed. The school is easy for them to get to from the Burns Road
estate, and because of the new underpass, is handy for the Coombelands and Twigden
estates too.
For those further aeld, the school is on 2 bus routes and pupils who live in the nearby villages are provided with
a pass for the school bus service.
To keep them safe we provide a crossing patrol at the school gates at each end of the day and encourage all
Year 5 pupils to take part in the Bikeability safety training scheme.

What does OfSTED say about Roysia?

What is OfSTED?
OfSTED (The Oce for Standards in Education, Childrens Services and Skills) is the
independent body that inspects schools and reports back to the Government in order to
promote improvement and value for money in the education services.
OfSTED last inspected Roysia in June 2013 and on the next two pages we have reproduced a few points from
their subsequent report. If you want to see the full report, you can see it on the Ofsted website
(www.ofsted.gov.uk), or ask for it from the school oce.

What is Excellent or Outstanding?

Outstanding teaching was seen in a number of subjects, including art, English, mathematics and physical
education.
Pupils are proud of their school and respond well to opportunities to develop their leadership skills, such as
through the School Council or as house captains. The School Council gives them the chance to make their
opinions known as well as represent their fellow pupils when, for instance, the Mayor visits.
The school is very well led by the headteacher and she is very well supported by a dedicated team of sta.
Together they promote a real sense of community, of purpose and of high expectations.

How Good is Roysia?

Pupils make good progress and achieve well as a result of good teaching. Teachers plan interesting lessons
that help to keep the pupils engaged.
Teachers mark pupils work regularly and tell the pupils how they can improve their work.
Pupils who need extra help to catch up and those with a disability or who have special educational needs are
well supported. The school makes very good use of other adults to provide much of this support.
More vulnerable pupils and those who have a disability or special educational needs are well supported. They
mix well with other pupils, so that everyone has an equal opportunity to play a full part in the life of the
school and take advantage of what the school has to oer.
Very good relationships and a genuine interest in every member of the school community contribute to the
positive atmosphere found throughout the school.
Behaviour is good both in and out of the classroom. Pupils are courteous and polite.
Pupils feel safe and bullying is rare. They play an active role in school life and take advantage of the many
opportunities provided for them to extend their learning beyond the classroom.
The headteacher and her sta have high expectations for all pupils.
The governing body is well informed and holds sta to account for the performance of the pupils and the
quality of teaching.

How high are Standards at Roysia?

Sta work eectively with pupils to improve their skills in reading, writing, communication and mathematics
so that they make good progress across a range of subjects and in all years.
A very clear tracking system is in place and gives an accurate picture of the progress pupils are making in all
subjects. This information is used to identify areas in which individual pupils need additional support and this
has helped to ensure that pupils make good progress in all year groups.

At Roysia School:
Teachers provide detailed and helpful feedback to pupils. This gives pupils clear advice about how they can
improve and they are given an opportunity to respond to the teachers comments.
Other adults are linked with particular year groups and are used very well to support pupils with additional
learning needs. They know the needs of the pupils and are able to oer focused and well-targeted support
that helps these pupils to make good progress.
There is good support for reading and writing within lessons which helps pupils to be more condent in, for
instance, using correct punctuation and making writing more interesting through the use of adjectives and
adverbs. Reading is encouraged and the librarian is skilled at steering pupils towards the right level of
reading book.
Every parent who completed the on-line survey agreed that their child was taught well at the school.

Roysia pupils:
enjoy their lessons. They work well with each other and respond positively to opportunities to assess each
others work.
attitudes to learning are good. They engage well in lessons and are keen to take part in learning activities.
They particularly enjoy working with each other and sharing ideas.
say they feel safe in school and every parent who expressed a view agreed. Bullying is rare and when it does
happen the pupils have faith in their teachers ability to sort it out. One of the best things about the school, in
the view of a group of Year 7 and 8 pupils, was that, You feel like you can always go to someone.

What do Parents and Carers say they like about Roysia?

Class sizes, staff very approachable, family orientated.
I am able to approach the school team to sort out concerns openly
School Clubs there are lots of activities to get involved with
The teachers are excellent
The pastoral care and small, close-knit school community. Every child counts
The friendly environment it has. I feel I can ring or pop in to discuss my childs needs, and feel at ease and
that something will be put into place if needs be

That my child is known by her name, not like some schools; the head is so nice, she says goodbye to her
pupils, by name, not many would.
