Instructor: Dr. Basheer Ahmad Samim

1. The probability distribution of random variable X is given by

X 0 1 2 3
P(X) 0.1 0.3 0.4 0.2

Find E(Y) where Y = +

2. If a coin is tossed 4 times, let X be the number of tails minus the

number of heads obtained in 4 tosses. Make sample space than find
the coefficient of variance of X.

3. If a pair of dice is rolled once. Find the expected value of X &

coefficient of variance of X if:
a) X is the sum of the upper most faces.
b) X is the absolute difference of the upper most faces.
c) X is the product of the upper most faces.

4. The joint probability mass function of (x,y) is given by

f(x,y)=K(2x+3y) for x=0,1,2 & y=1,2,3

Find the value of ‘K’ & also find the marginal distribution of random
variable x & y.

5. If X denotes the number of Aces & Y denotes the number of Queens

obtained when 2 cards are drawn randomly from a deck of 52 cards
without replacement, obtain the joint probability distribution of (X,Y).
Also find the marginal distribution of X &Y.

6. Survey shows that the probability of an item produced by a certain

machine will be defective is 0.05. If the produced items are sent to the
market in packets of 40. Find the number of packets containing:
a) Exactly 2 defectives.
b) At least 4 defectives.
c) At most 3 defectives.

7. Transport Provider Company has 12 Toyota & 8 Suzuki cars. If 5 of

these cars are in the workshop for repair & a Toyota car is as likely to
be in for repairs as a Suzuki car. What is the probability that
a) 3 of them are Toyota & 2 are Suzuki cars.
b) At least 3 of them are Toyota cars.
c) All the 5 are Toyota cars.

8. Survey shows that the probability of PIZZA produced by Italian Cafe

will be unhygienic is 0.5. If the produced PIZZA are sent to the market
in packets of 15. Find the number of packets containing:
a) Exactly 5 unhygienic PIZZA.
b) Fewer than 4 unhygienic PIZZA.
c) Between 2 and 6 (inclusive) unhygienic PIZZA.

9. A panel of 7 judges is to decide which of the two final contestants A

&B will be declared the winner; a simple majority of the judges will
determine the winner. Assume that 4 of the judges will vote for “A” &
other 3 will vote for “B”. If we randomly select 3 of the judges & seek
their verdict, what is the probability that a majority of them will favor
“A”?

coin 6 times?

Company in Dubai is 2 houses per day. What is the probability that
exactly 3 homes will be sold tomorrow?

ordinary deck of 52 cards. What is the probability of getting
a) Exactly 4 Red cards.
b) 2 or fewer Hearts.
c) At least 2 Kings.

is the probability that tourist will see fewer than 4 lions on the next 1-
day safari?

the privacy of their email. Based on this information what is the
probability that for a random sample of 10 internet users
a) Between 6 to 8 (inclusive), are concerned about their email
privacy.
