SPELLING RULERS NOUNS

Most nouns form their plural by adding –s. Singular nouns ending in –s, -ss, -sh, -ch, -x, -o, add –es in
the plural.

bus buses glass glasses


car cars

Singular nouns ending in a consonant + y; drop the y brush brushes watch watches
and add –ies in the plural.

box boxes tomato tomatoes

strawberry strawberries
Some nouns are irregular. For example

Singular nouns ending in –f or –fe; drop the –f or –fe


and add –ves in the plural.

mouse mice deer deer

leaf leaves knife knives


child children man men

Singular nouns of foreign origin ending in –o just add –s in the


plural.

woman women goose geese

pianos kilos
piano kilo

tooth teeth sheep sheep

radio radios photo photos

Remember: Adjectives do not add –s in the plural.
