General
SafeRing is a ring main unit for the secondary distribution network. SafeRing can be supplied
in a number of different configurations suitable for most switching applications in 12/24 kV
distribution networks. When combined with the flexible SafePlus concept, which is ABB’s
extendable, modular compact switchgear, they represent a complete solution for 12/24 kV
secondary distribution networks. SafeRing and SafePlus have identical user interfaces.

SafeRing is a completely sealed system with a stainless steel tank containing all the live parts
and switching functions. A sealed steel tank with constant atmospheric conditions ensures a
high level of reliability as well as personnel safety and a virtually maintenance-free system.

The SafeRing concept offers a choice of either a switch fuse combination or circuit breaker
with relay for protection of the transformer. As the first ring main unit, SafeRing can be
supplied complete with an integral remote control and monitoring unit.

SafeRing IS SUPPLIED WITH THE FOLLOWING STANDARD EQUIPMENT:

• Earthing switches
• Operating mechanisms with integral mechanical interlocking
• Operating handle
• Facilities for padlocks on all switching functions
• Bushings for cable connection in front with cable covers
• Manometer for SF6 pressure/density monitoring
• Lifting lug for easy handling
• All units are designed for the subsequent fitting of an integral remote control and monitoring unit

b CIRCUIT BREAKER
WITH RELAY
When vacuum circuit breakers
are chosen as transformer pro-
tection, the standard relay is ABB
PR521. This system of protection
does not require an external po-
wer supply, as the power is taken
from the current transformers. A
limited choise of other relays are
available on demand.

c FUSES
When switch fuse combinations
are chosen as transformer
protection, the fuse canisters are
positioned behind a separately
interlocked cover in front of the
unit. To facilitate fuse replace-
ment, the operating handle is
used to remove the fuse canister
covers. The fuse tripping system
is located at the front, ensuring
that the entire solution is water-
proof.

Manually operated mechanisms
for cable and transformer

standard. As an option, they can
also be fitted with motor
operation.

h CABLE CONNECTIONS
SafeRing is fitted with standard-
ised bushings that comply with
DIN 47636. All the bushings are
the same height from the ground
and are protected by a cable
cover. The cable covers can be
supplied with interlocking to the
earthing switches. As an option
arc-proof cable covers are
available. It is also possible to
connect parallel cables with a
special double cable cover.

KEY INTERLOCKING
SafeRing can be supplied with
a key interlocking system for
breakers, switches and earthing
switches.

Remote control and monitoring unit

The use of an integrated remote control and monitoring unit offers many advantages. Down-
time can be reduced significantly when a fault is quickly identified and isolated. Easy
reconfiguration and load monitoring allows for more efficient use of the nettwork.
Documentation of voltage quality will also be possible. The unit forms an integral part of the
SafeRing ring main unit. It is supplied fully connected to motor control and monitoring equipment.
There is a defined interface, which simplifies any retrofit installation of the unit.
An ABB RTU211 remote control unit is used for signal processing.

FUNCTIONS:
• Remote control and position indication for up to 4 switches
• Monitoring of short-circuit indicators
• Monitoring of SF6 gas pressure/density
• Position indication for arc suppressor

ADDITIONAL EQUIPMENT:
• DPI- Direct Process Interface board for:
Monitoring of current on the high-voltage side with ring core transformers.
Monitoring of current and voltage, on the low-voltage side of the distribution transformer. (Power
quality monitoring)

COMMUNICATION:
The unit can be supplied for different types of communication media. External communication
such as radio is connected via an RS232 interface which is supplied as standard.

The unit can be supplied with an integral modem for telecommuni-

cations or ABB’s own modem for communication via the cable
screen or conductor.
