INTERIM REPORT
Introduction:

Overview of LED Technology-

A light-emitting diode (LED) is a semiconductor light source. LEDs are used as indicator lamps
in many devices, and are increasingly used for lighting. Introduced as a practical electronic
component in 1962, early LEDs emitted low-intensity red light, but modern versions are
available across the visible, ultraviolet and infrared wavelengths, with very high brightness.
When a light-emitting diode is forward biased (switched on), electrons are able
to recombine with electron holes within the device, releasing energy in the form of photons. This
effect is called electroluminescence and the color of the light (corresponding to the energy of the
photon) is determined by the energy gap of the semiconductor. An LED is often small in area
(less than 1 mm2), and integrated optical components may be used to shape its radiation pattern.
LEDs present many advantages over incandescent light sources including lower energy
consumption, longer lifetime, improved robustness, smaller size, faster switching, and greater
durability and reliability. LEDs powerful enough for room lighting are relatively expensive and
require more precise current and heat management than compact fluorescent lamp sources of
comparable output.
Light-emitting diodes are used in applications as diverse as replacements for aviation
lighting, automotive lighting (particularly brake lamps, turn signals and indicators) as well as
in traffic signals. The compact size, the possibility of narrow bandwidth, switching speed, and
extreme reliability of LEDs has allowed new text and video displays and sensors to be
developed, while their high switching rates are also useful in advanced communications
technology. Infrared LED’s are also used in the remote control units of many commercial
products including televisions, DVD players, and other domestic appliances.

Lumalive:

Philips Lumalive is a technology that integrates LEDs into fabrics. Lumalive integrates a flexible
array of miniature light-emitting diodes into clothing, which allows the cloth to display graphics,
text, and animation]
The technology has been used for promotional purposes at trade shows, and was demonstrated at
the 2006 IFA in Berlin. The result was extremely popular on YouTube, with millions of
viewings. This attracted the attention of entrepreneurial management in Philips, which initiated
and funded the set up of a new business unit. This business unit was tasked with investigating the
commercial and technological options, offered by luminating fabrics and to prepare a future
business around this idea.
Philips Lumalive opened for business on 1 July 2007 and quickly achieved its first commercial
success. The first customer and partner was Boost Products, who have successfully deployed
Lumalive Event Gear in numerous events around the globe.
Philips Lumalive is a business unit within Royal Philips Electronics.

Dichroic LED Glass

Dichroic LED Glass is a new composite material which is based on the technology of transparent
LED embedded glass. Dichroic LED glasses are not transparent like transparent LED embedded
Glass Further more; the reflected color of the LED Glass is a function of the angle
of light reflection. This is caused by a dichroic interlayer material which causes visible light to
be split up into distinct beams of different wavelengths.
Consequently, Dichroic LED Glass is produced by laminating Dichroic and LED interlayer’s
between glasses by means of vacuum lamination. The history of vacuum lamination
and sputtered metallic layers having been described in Vacuum International. The specification
of a Dichroic LED Glass Sandwich may be described like this:
Top Layer: Glass
Interlayer: Transparent thermoplastic material like TPU, PVB or EVA
Interlayer: LED (light emitting diodes) on transparent conductive Polymer
Interlayer: Transparent thermoplastic material like TPU, PVB or EVA
Interlayer: Pressure sensitive Dichroic polymeric film glued on bottom layer
Bottom layer: Glass

Benefits of the LED Technology:

Light-activated resins are one-part translucent polymers that cure and quickly harden when
exposed to specific light spectrums. The required wavelength for cure is specific to
the resin chemistry.
The resin remains liquid (thick, like syrup or honey) under normal indoor lighting which allows
the user to work with the material until curing is desired. After curing, light-activated resin is
denser than air-cured resins due to its inherent chemistry and because no mixing is required that
might introduce air bubbles.
Technology
Resin chemistry is tailored by manufacturers to meet specific customer needs. Both visible
light and ultraviolet light have been used as curing mechanisms for this technology. Ultraviolet
light presents some potential hazards and workers using ultraviolet curing resins generally wear
protective equipment.
Uses
Dentists have used visible-light activated resins as adhesives for decades. Resin cements are
utilized in luting cast ceramic, full porcelain, and veneer restorations that are thin or translucent
to permit visible light penetration and thus polymerize the cement. Light-activated cements may
be radiolucent and are usually provided in various shades since they are utilized in esthetically
demanding situations.

Conventional halogen bulbs, argon lasers and xenon arc lights are currently used in clinical
practice. A new technological approach for curing light activated oral biomaterials is presented.
The new light curing unit (LCU) is based on blue light-emitting diodes (LED). The main
potential benefits of LED LCU technology are: long lifetime of LED LCU (several thousand
hours), no filters or cooling fan required, virtually no decrease of light output over lifetime with
resulting consistent and high quality of material curing. Simple depth of cure experiments
of dental composites cured with LED technology show promising results.
Industrial facilities are utilizing light-activated resin as a sealant for leaks and cracks. Some
light-activated resins have unique properties that make it ideal as a pipe repair product. These
resins cure rapidly on any surface, wet or dry.
Light-activated resins recently gained a foothold with fly tiers as a way to create custom flies, in
a short period of time, with very little clean up involved. Manufacturers also use light curing
systems in OEM assembly applications such as specialty electronics or medical device
applications.

The foot print of technology is seen in many industries and one such industry is automobile
industry. Of the automobile sector car industry is said to have reached its glory at least in the past
decade. There are many components that makes up a car and many people nowadays goes for a
customized car accessories that suits their taste. One such component that is making news
everywhere is the LED lights for Cars. LED's are reaching their pinnacle nowadays and the
improvements in technology have made it possible. There are lots of areas that are dependent on
LED's. One such main or important area is the ambulance. Accidents have become part and
parcel of everyone's life and rightly so. Life has become so mechanical and people never even
have time to stand and greet other people. People rush to office as though that is their dwelling
place. Because of these things accidents happen and the necessity of an ambulance has become
very important a requisite.
LED's are used in ambulances in a very large way. Take for instance an accident that has
happened in an area that is supposed to hold heavy traffic. It is difficult for any traffic police man
to clear the whole area and to take the injured person to hospital on time. In these cases a LED
can come handy. Wonder how a LED can help here? Every ambulance carries a LED dash lights
and this is more useful than the traditional sirens and long horns. Horns are strictly restricted in
many places and that too near hospitals and schools. This would be highly disturbing to aged
people and this may even disturb their sleep. A LED can replace this horn and sirens. It can be
used until the area is clear and the patient is taken to the hospital. Ambulances often create
nuisance to other people in the form of sirens and long horns and an ambulance carrying a LED
can help to avoid such situations. People may wonder what could be done during the dark as
most accidents happen during dark. But the answer to this question is that there is an option of
using two LED lights, one inside and the other outside to avoid any confusion
There is much advancement in the automobile sector. Choosing a car has become so difficult.
There are lots of features that people give ample importance and one such feature is the look of
the car. There is a big debate going on in the market as which is important or which is the driving
force for a person to buy a car and many people still opt for the design of the car and rightly so.
The design of the car is so important for the sale of the car. A car with LED installed will give a
good look to the customer. Among their advancements or the technology developed in the
automobile sector there are a few notable things. One big revolution that I would call is the LED
technology. The install of LED in cars has created a new look to the cars. It has enhanced the
look of the car. People always like to expect much more from the manufacturers end and a car
with a LED is the right choice for those who look for the same. Lighting always looks pretty in a
car. Say it the interiors or exteriors, many people like to have their car look stunning in the
interiors and a LED in a car will definitely help to enhance the interior of the car. The main
advantage of using a LED in car is that it can be used in any way we like.

Manufacturing LED industry – The manufacturing of LED industry is limited to certain big
corporations. Since LED is a diode, its fabrication is complex, so it cannot be a household
industry like plastics etc. It involves complex assembly of machines, so only big corporations
have the leverage and the money to set up LED manufacturing units. LED sales industry – The
LED sales industry is highly disorganized. When the LEDs get outside the factory they go into
the hands of distributors, and then they go into the hands of un-numbered retailers. The LED
sales industry thus is in the hands of countless shops and stores, and they offer neither warranty
nor much after sales handshakes. The LED industry needs some kind of organized retail which
will help the LED consumers in the long run. LED accessories – The LED offshoot industry is
very complex, and this is the one that make the bulk of LED consumption, In this LED industry
come LED displays, scrolling boards, warning lights LED bulbs, LED tube lights, LED signs, L

ED outdoor displays etc. This is an awesome industry on its own front and all these sectors
consume a lot of LEDs in manufacturing the LED-based products. Main LED industry
consumption areas – The LEDs are mainly consumed in china and India and Us. China
consumes a major share of LEDs for manufacturing LED products. Us and India too consume a
lot of LEDs. LED industry production centers – There are two main LED production centers –
Us and china, and Taiwan. A few years earlier it was Us which was the dominating area, but now
the position has been taken by china. China has huge consumption, an with its proximity to Asia,
and less manufacturing cots it is becoming a hub of LED manufacturing along with Taiwan.
LED industry brands – There are not many brands in the LED industry. The main ones are king
bright, and osram, and then there are many Chinese companies. The LED offshoot industry has
many small to big players that manufacture a lot of products. The LED industry wants a global
player like Samsung or Texas.

Instruments to enter LED manufacturing sphere. If a global giant enters the LED industry it will
help the LED cause, making the LEDs better and their costs fraction of what it is now.

White Broad spectrum ΔV = 3.5 Blue/UV diode with yellow phosphor

This method involves coating an LED of one color (mostly blue LED made of InGaN)
with phosphor of different colors to form white light; the resultant LEDs are called phosphor-
based white LEDs. A fraction of the blue light undergoes the Stokes shift being transformed
from shorter wavelengths to longer. Depending on the color of the original LED, phosphors of
different colors can be employed. If several phosphor layers of distinct colors are applied, the
emitted spectrum is broadened, effectively raising the color rendering index (CRI) value of a
given LED.
Phosphor based LEDs have a lower efficiency than normal LEDs due to the heat loss from the
Stokes shift and also other phosphor-related degradation issues. However, the phosphor method
is still the most popular method for making high intensity white LEDs. The design and
production of a light source or light fixture using a monochrome emitter with phosphor
conversion is simpler and cheaper than a complex RGB system, and the majority of high
intensity white LEDs presently on the market are manufactured using phosphor light conversion.
The greatest barrier to high efficiency is the seemingly unavoidable Stokes energy loss.
However, much effort is being spent on optimizing these devices to higher light output and
higher operation temperatures. For instance, the efficiency can be raised by adapting better
package design or by using a more suitable type of phosphor. Philips Lumileds' patented
conformal coating process addresses the issue of varying phosphor thickness, giving the white
LEDs a more homogeneous white light. With development ongoing, the efficiency of phosphor
based LEDs generally rises with each new product announcement.
The phosphor based white LEDs encapsulate InGaN blue LEDs inside phosphor coated epoxy. A
common yellow phosphor material iscerium-doped yttrium aluminium garnet (Ce3+:YAG).
White LEDs can also be made by coating near ultraviolet (NUV) emitting LEDs with a mixture
of high efficiency europium-based red and blue emitting phosphors plus green emitting copper
and aluminium doped zinc sulfide (ZnS:Cu, Al). This is a method analogous to the
way fluorescent lamps work. This method is less efficient than the blue LED with YAG:Ce
phosphor, as the Stokes shift is larger, so more energy is converted to heat, but yields light with
better spectral characteristics, which render color better. Due to the higher radiative output of the
ultraviolet LEDs than of the blue ones, both methods offer comparable brightness. A concern is
that UV light may leak from a malfunctioning light source and cause harm to human eyes or
skin.

Advantages

LED instruments can contain a number of different colored LEDs, often Red, Green and Blue,
and different light output colors can be achieved by adjusting the intensity of each LED color
group. LED instruments should have a long service life relative to other options, without the
expense of color gel or replacement lamps.
LED instruments are increasingly used for live music events, most notably festivals where they
are more visible than conventional lighting under day light. LED instruments were prominently
used for the 'live earth' festival as they are regarded as more environmentally friendly as fixture
for fixture they use far less power than other lighting.
Another advantage of LED instruments is that they can be controlled directly using DMX and do
not require additional dimmers; the intensity of the LEDs being adjusted by circuitry onboard the
fixture. Because of their low power consumption several units can be daisy chained to one power
supply. [3]
Due to low heat output, LED instruments can be used in areas where the high amount of heat
conventional stage fixtures put off would not be ideal. For this reason, LED instruments are used
to light ice sculptures, especially when lighting the sculptures from within.

Disadvantages

LED instruments cannot be used to create a hard edged beam, which is needed for gobos and
other effects which require the use of an ellipsoidal reflector spotlight. Because color mixing is
done using three or more colors of LEDs, mixed colors will have multiple edges to shadows
where different colors are showing, however Elation Professional has introduced instruments
that group three LEDs behind a single lens to make the multiple shadow lines less
noticeable. Because of the multiple light sources in the fixture, most shadows are a soft edge as
well.
As of 2008, the output intensity of LED lighting is still unable to match the luminous power of
traditional incandescent lamps. A 300 watt medium-spot GE PAR-54 easily outshines a PAR-64
RGB LED Pro fixture from American DJ, which is one of the brightest LED fixtures available in
2008. The LED output spectrum is additionally very cold (blue) compared to the warm
(yellow/red) of the incandescent.
Several times as many LED fixtures may be needed to match the brightness of a traditional
fixture of similar size. But LED fixtures also currently cost several times more than a traditional
incandescent fixture, greatly increasing the expense to use LED fixtures at the same brightness
level as with traditional incandescent.
