Customer profile
SABMiller is one of the worlds largest brewers with more beers in the top 50 beer brands than anyone else. Every minute, an astonishing total of 46,000 pints of SABMiller beer are consumed worldwide. Its also a large and complex company in IT terms, with 30,000 seats across operations in 40 countries.
Solutions Overview
Project Requirements
SABMiller wanted help to design a new SMS 2003 infrastructure, and additional software to supplement SMS 2003s inbuilt features: Monitoring security of worldwide network Detailed, organization-wide reporting Remote patch application Ability to carry out maintenance out of hours Faster deployment
The challenge
SABMiller wanted to get better insight into and control over its IT estate, to ensure it was properly patched and secure against hackers and viruses. As the company uses Microsoft software, SMS 2003 was the obvious choice. However, the company felt that it needed more features than supplied out of the box with SMS 2003. In particular, it wanted to update desktop and laptop machines out of hours, reducing disruption to users. And it wanted to be able to turn on a machine, update it, and turn it off again remotely, saving the time and expense of dispatching IT staff to the physical site. With SABMillers geographically dispersed network, including small sites in quite remote locations, this last factor was especially important. So too was the question of control. SABMillers corporate IT team did not want to impose a particular solution or way of doing things on separate federated branches of the company. But it did want to monitor the security status of its subsidiaries. Roger Chapp, IT Manager at SABMiller, explains: Any business unit that is outside the compliance standard can have an impact on a global network. We have firewalls in place between the business units, but we still need to know the status of the business units. This enables us to protect each other from each other.
Solution Summary
SABMiller chose SMS 2003 to monitor its systems, selecting 1E to: Design new infrastructure Implement proprietary software including WakeUp and NightWatchman Transfer skills to internal staff Provide full project documentation for future reference
Key Benefits
Lower support costs due to remote machine management Smoother experience for end users with better maintained software Confidence that worldwide network is secure Faster software deployment
The solution
1Es wide-ranging expertise and software were exactly what SABMiller needed. The team quickly drew up a new infrastructure design that would provide comprehensive reporting at the international level, without removing control from regional managers.
The benefits
The benefits of the work 1E has done, which was delivered to schedule, are considerable. For instance, SABMiller can now maintain software both locally and remotely, on servers, desktops and laptops, resulting in a 30 to 40 per cent reduction in the number of support-desk calls concerning applications not working. As a result, the IT team can concentrate on other work, in the knowledge that routine maintenance is being taken care of. A further advantage is how much more quickly software can be installed. We can have a call logged with the helpdesk, and twenty minutes later the new software will have been installed, and no-one will have had to go near the desk, says Roger Chapp. Under the old system, the user would have had to have waited until a support person could go to the desktop machine and install the software ... Now we have a standard package on the server that doesnt impact either the user or the support team. 1E also provided clear, detailed documentation and helped the SABMiller IT team to get quickly up to speed with the new system. As more business units are connected into the system, the team will be able to get a global view of the companys security status. The new system will even allow employees who are travelling to receive updates from the closest, most convenient SMS server to where they are, meaning updates will take place even more rapidly. What 1E brought to the table was experience in the industry, and knowledge to help us get around the shortcomings of SMS. They know the weaknesses of SMS and how to mitigate those weaknesses to ensure we werent impacted by them ... As a company, we would reuse them at any point in time, and I would always recommend them highly because of how professional they are. Roger Chapp, IT Manager at SABMiller
