It is obvious that the achievements in science and technology as well as other areas in recent 100

years have changed our society deeply. There are many people think that “there is no better time
to be alive than now!”

In my opinion, I agree that the living standard in our society has raised so much. Now with many
medical successes and nutrient food, the people’s health has been improved considerably. Live-
span also has been raised. In term of technology, we can be proud of the invention of computer.
The computer has brought about a great revolution. People can save time, money, and many
other things.

However, everything has two sides. The advance in science and technology also causes negative
effect in our society. It is said that people is more and more dependent on technological
inventions, especially computers now. The children have been attracted too much by TV
programs, games on computer. It will be harmful when parents can not control their children.
Because of all above attractions, children are now lazy with physical exercises, easy to get many
diseases, especially the obesity and being short-sighted. The souls of children are affected, too.
Many case that children commit a crime occurred because of watching violent films or games.

People live in modern life with advanced still complain about the loose relationship among
people. People always have to catch up with the machine. They have very little time for family
and less for friends and neighborhoods.

Therefore, nowadays is not likely to be the best time to live in. People still continue to find the
best for them.

As science and technology advances with time, it has brought many benefits to mankind
especially those those who are financially challenged. Science and technology has helped man
created a higher standard of living and jobs among its other benefits. It has to a large extent solve
the main concerns of the impoverished, problems such as health problems uch as polio, food and
unemployment.
There are others who claim that oppose such a view as they claim that science and technology
has exacerbated the problems of the poor by widening the economic gap of the rich and the
poor. For exaple, the financially challenged are bereft of commodities such as the internet. This
puts them at a disposition as they will not be able to acquire the knowledge and skills disposable
to those who have them. Hence they would not be able to compete on equal grounds with others
for job oppotunities. However science and technology has helped man establish global
communication. With the establishment of global communication, countries would be able to
undergo globalisation. New jobs would be created with the aid of foreign investment and in the
communication sector. This helps decrease the unemployment rate and account for the concern
of unemployment of the poor.
Another argument brought forth by opponents is that science and technology has brought about
the drgradation of our environment. This has adverse effects upon the poor as they are heavily
reliant on the environment for their daily survival such as fishing. However science and
technology has a modern infrastructure whereby sanitary systems and proper irrigtion systems
have convenient the lives of the poor. Water purication systems have improved the standard of
living of the poor and methods such as aeroponics offer the hope to the agricultural problems
face by the poor. Furthermore, advances into the field of genetic engineering and life sciences
offer the solution to fmine, low rop yield and even mortality rates.

While, science and technology had indeed led to great advances in global development,
increased investment in that field could do much more to feed, nurture, house, and employ the
growing world population while protecting the environment, Harvard professor William Clark told a
panel discussion on science and technology for sustainable development this morning.

Mr. Clark, Harvey Brooks Professor of International Science, Public Policy and Human
Development, noted that investments in science and technology had historically high rates of
return. Through better mobilization of resources, joint solutions and shared knowledge the
world’s scientific and technological minds could be tapped to reverse Africa’s declining
agricultural production, make energy use more efficient, design systems to accommodate
explosive population growth, restore degrading ecosystems and conserve biodiversity.

He said that the International Initiative on Science and Technology for Sustainability, the
brainchild of independent scientists, had in the last four years queried agriculture, industry and
health experts worldwide to assess science and technology’s role, in meeting development
objectives set forth by the United Nations. They had agreed that there was a real need for an
international research system similar to those used to advance agribusiness and public health
campaigns to eliminate major diseases and stratospheric ozone protection.

However, Second Committee Chairman Iftekhar Chowdhury (Bangladesh), who chaired the
panel, said that the creation and application of science and technology to address poverty was
one of the most neglected aspects of development, thus far. Low levels of research and
development, expenditures in health, education, and the creation of income and employment
were widening the gap between rich and poor.
