New Website is Active
Congratulations to Mike Moss for getting the new LPNM Official Site – lpnm.us – up and running.
The old one – libertarian-party-nm.org [ short URLs – lp-nm.org and nmlp.org ] – is still up, but we
have no idea how long that situation will last. I have set up a Yahoo!-hosted replacement email list
for the Forum currently hosted at the “long name” site, as we have no idea when that one will quit
operating on us. The URL for the new list on Yahoo! Is as follows –

CNM Libertarians
I've recently registered for classes at Central New Mexico Community College [CNM] here in
Albuquerque. While I'm there, I see no reason why I can't hang out a shingle for a CNM Libertarian
group. At present, that shingle is only a virtual one – groups.myspace.com/cnmlibertarians. At
press time, there are two others signed up there, and I have yet to attend any classes.
MORE CANDIDATES NEEDED!
Hey, folks, it's that time again – Election Season! The LPNM needs candidates for public office, as
political campaigns are one of the ways that we can get the libertarian message out to the public.
Specifically, I'm calling for everyone who can to run for State Representative or Senator. State
Legislature races are the easiest for which to get your name listed on the ballot – at most, you
would need to turn in 300 signatures for either a House or Senate candidacy, as comapred to 800
for county commissioner, 2500 for U.S. Congress, and 8000 for U.S. Senate.
While at this year's State Convention, I was told that there were prospective candidates for county
commissioner races in San Juan and Santa Fe Counties. I look forward to seeing their names on
the LPNM's slate, alongside myself and Mark Curtis.
To Support or Not Support the National Ticket
I've been seeing lots and lots of anti-Barr and anti-Root commentary coming from various circles in
the LP since the nomination on 25 May 2008. I'll admit that if I had been there, I would most likely
have been one of the opponents to the presidential campaigns of both of them. After all, I had
posted a public endorsement of Steve Kubby [ tinyurl.com/3w23p3 ] and written some rather
vitriolic anti-Barr pieces, two of which ran in The Libertarian Enterprise back-to-back.
Do I have qualms about the campaign as it exists at present? YES. Still, I reecived several emails
from Steve Kubby. If anyone has a reason to hate Bob Barr, it's Steve Kubby. And yet, Steve
decided that it would be better for the cause to swallow his pride and get behind Barr. If Steve can
do that, so can I. That doesn't mean that the candidates get blank checks to do as they please –
I'm going to follow Ronald Reagan's policy here and “Trust, but verify” where the campaign is
concerned, both in terms of the ideology and the fiduciary issues.

Bernalillo – The BCLP is hosting two meetings per month. For more

Jay Vandersloot continues to be active in staffing at table at blade and
gun shows at the State Fairgrounds in Albuquerque and could use
some help at the shows – any assistance would be welcome, even if it
is only for a couple of hours. Anyone interested in helping at the table
at the gun show, providing literature to hand out, loaning us an LP
banner, or a projection screen should contact Jay at either

Paul Gessing and the staff of the Rio Grande Foundation have been
getting columns and letters to the editor printed in the local
newspapers, including the Albuquerque Journal. on a regular basis.
Some of those have been printed here in New Mexico Liberty. Others
are available at the RGF's website – riograndefoundation.org.
Mike Blessing recently founded the CNM Libertarians at Central New
Mexico Community College. At present, it exists only on the internet,
but Mike hopes to start having physical meetings soon. For more

Dona Ana – The LPDAC Central Committee has been having monthly
meetings, as well as an information table at the Las Cruces Farmer's

The Dona Ana County Convention took place on 16 February 2008, in
the Dresp Room of the Branigan Library.
Otero – The Otero County LP was recently organized by Dr. Gilberto
Heredia. Their first two meetings were attended by 13 people and
garnered coverage by the Alamogordo Daily News – see page 6 for
more information..
San Juan – The SJCLP has been having monthly meetings, and has
added a monthly, no-charge, open-to-the-public movie showing on the
same night as the county meeting. For more information, see the

Sandoval – The LPSC is having its monthly meetings on the fourth
Tuesday of each month.
Santa Fe – Ed Nagel is working on organizing an LPNM county

Enough is enough!
I have read a number of emails, lately, alleging that the LP has been
taken over by conservatives. To that I am compelled to ask, if the
conservatives have taken over the LP, why were we able to
accomplish so much in restoring so many planks to the platform? At
most LP Conventions we would not have been able to get through
even half of the platform plank proposals. However, as the vast
majority of the delegates realized the need to beef up the platform, we
all worked together and made it happen. We actually completed the
entire platform agenda in the time allotted, a feat I have not seen in
the past. To add to this, a number of the planks were things that would
have been anathema to conservatives, yet they were all passed by
vast majorities, not barely passed, but rather overwhelmingly passed.
That would not have happened had we been taken over by
conservatives! All weekend at the convention, we saw the LP
principles supported, whether concerning the bylaws changes, the
platform changes, or any of the other issues brought before the body
of the delegates. Those in line with Libertarian principles were
accepted, while those not in accordance with Libertarian principles
were rejected. If we have been taken over by conservatives, how were
we able to accomplish this feat? A few Libertarians hold fast to their
opinion, based on one or two issues, that we have been taken over by
conservatives. I firmly reject the contention that we have been
taken over by conservatives. What we MUST NOT do is back away
from our party. Our platform and our party are "safe," at least until the
next convention. Having a roomful of principled Libertarians at the
2010 convention will assure that for yet another two years.
The reason for the belief that we were taken over by conservatives is
due to our having selected Bob Barr as our Presidential candidate.
While I did not vote for Bob Barr, not in any of the six iterations of the
voting process, I must point out that just because things did not go the
way some of us were hoping for does not invalidate the result in this
selection. It was a fair, democratic process that resulted in the
selection of Bob Barr. I must also point out that Bob Barr apologized
for his past actions. Not only was this in front of the delegates, but was
broadcast on live TV on CSPAN. He also vowed to work to correct
those past actions. Who among you has NEVER done anything
wrong? We have all made mistakes. We have all changed our minds,
opinions, beliefs, etc. Regardless of whether you believe in the Bible,
there is a good quote from it. The Bible states, "Let him who is without
sin cast the first stone." That would disqualify all of us from being able
to "cast the first stone." According to those I spoke with from the
Georgia delegation and from the LNC, since his conversion to the
Libertarian Party, Bob Barr has shown continued support for our
principles.
But, you say, what about his position on the "Fair Tax" issue? (I,
personally, am against the "Fair Tax"). You say that it is proof that Bob
Barr is not Libertarian enough, that he is violating Libertarian
principles. I find that just as there are many Libertarians on both sides
of the pro-life, pro-choice issue, there are also Libertarians on both
sides of the "Fair Tax" issue, plus there also some who look at it as at
least a step in the right direction, though not as far as we would want.
We need to realize that not all Libertarians agree on all issues. Yep,
that’s right! We actually disagree on many things. Though I do not
personally support the “Fair Tax,” many do because they feel it would
make the income tax more visible, more likely to attract attention that
leads to a complete repeal, and they believe it’s more . . . fair. It's "fair"
to say that many “Fair Tax” supporters would prefer NO tax, but that
an interim step is more likely to be accepted by the general public than
a full repeal immediately. While the LPNM has issued an anti-Fair Tax
resolution back in 2006, the contents of which I agree, I must ask
specifically which Libertarian principle supporting the "Fair Tax" is
in violation of. We have a plank in our platform against the income tax,
but what principle or plank does a stance in favor of the "Fair Tax"
violate? Some say that it is a violation of the “non-initiation of force
principle,” also known as the “non-aggression” principle.”

If that is your stance, you’re “spitting in the wind,” because that
position would have to reject all use of democratic principles. We
would not even be able to vote on anything at our own conventions.
Forget voting on anything, because whatever is decided by that vote
would be considered initiation of force against those who voted (or
would have voted) against the issue. This is an unrealistic stance. We
could have made a motion to add a plank to our platform on the "Fair
Tax" issue, but we did not. Maybe that was an oversight. Maybe it
would havepassed, or maybe it might not have passed. The reality is
that we did not do so.
Regardless of what we may think, and what we may do or not do, it
remains a fact the Bob Barr IS the Presidential Candidate of the
Libertarian Party, and that regardless of which states he may or may
not be listed on the ballot, Bob Barr will still be seen by all America as
the LP candidate. It is time we get past having "TEMPER
TANTRUMS" because we did not get our way, and we start
constructively determining how best to move forward. It's time we start
being constructive and stop being destructive. It's time we stop all this
banter that is only working to tear the LP further apart into various
factions than it already is. Instead, we should be working to unite the
LP. No, I am not advocating we compromise our principles. I am
saying we need to approach these issues with a logic that is absent of
anger and vindictiveness engendered by our not having gotten our
way. We do not always get our way. That’s the way life is. Get used to
it!
In closing, let me repeat my favorite quote, one that applies in every
situation, and especially right now for the Libertarian Party, the various
state and county affiliates, and all Libertarians. “This time, like all
times, is a good one, if we but know what to do with it.” – Ralph
Waldo Emerson (underline emphasis mine). Enough IS enough!
We all have a LOT of work ahead of us and what we do with the latest
opportunity dealt to us is what will define our party for a lot of
Americans. Let's show them that we are not ONLY the Party of
Principle, but that those principles will serve ALL well! Let us ensure
that we do what is, in fact, for the good of the party, to build it up and
unify it, not to tear it apart because we did not get our way. It’s up to
all of us. Are you up to the task?
BY THE WAY: I find the thought of ANY of the three Major party
candidates who are still in the running being elected to be a
scary thought. The way I see it, the only viable option is to vote
your conscience. For me, that means voting Libertarian.
LPNM Special Convention and
Central Committee Meeting
The LPNM will hold a Special Convention in conjunction with
the CenCom meeting on Sunday, June 8, 2008. The purpose of
this special convention is to select electors for the upcoming
election.
This convention and meeting will be at St. Clair’s Winery and
Bistro at 901 Rio Grande Blvd, about one block south of I-40
(exit 157). Pay-as-you-go lunch at Noon, with the Special
Convention at 1PM, followed by the CenCom meeting
immediately following it.

Where Do We Go From Here?

Dear Friends, Activists and Fellow Libertarians,
I’ve just returned from the Libertarian National Convention, held this
past week in Denver. I know a lot of people are stunned and some are
still angry that Bob Barr won. Although I am exhausted, I wanted to
get a message out about where we go from here.
Anti-Barr literature, buttons and posters were highly visible throughout
the entire convention. Those who were opposed to Barr made it
painfully clear to him how much they disliked him.
For my part, I have taken Barr to task on several occasions. I've
blasted Barr for violating his oath of office to uphold and defend the
Constitution by shutting down the DC vote on medical marijuana – a
vote that the ACLU later found out through court action was a
whopping 69% in support.
In fact, when I first met Barr, one of the first things I said to him was,
"What should I tell all my friends and fellow activists who have
suffered so terribly because of the laws you helped to write and fund?”
His response? "Tell them my conversion is sincere."
I've attacked Root as well, slamming him over his past comments
about the threat of "Islamo-Fascism" and his promoting himself as
"W.A.R."
Fortunately, I've had several opportunities to engage both men
privately and to ask the tough questions, one on one. Their responses,
their concerns and their integrity impressed me.
That's not to say that we still don't have our differences, but I can tell
you that Barr and Root are sincere and effective spokesmen for
reigning in the government, restoring our constitutional rights, allowing
states to determine their own laws regarding drugs and for the full
legalization of medical marijuana.
Although my good friend and long time party activist, Tom Knapp has
been highly critical of Root, I have found Wayne to be one of the
nicest, smartest, and honest human being I've ever known. After
nearly two years of campaigning, we have developed enormous
respect for each other and intend to be friends for life. I am just as
impressed with his wonderful wife and family. In particular, I was
blown away by the nomination speech, delivered live to a national
audience, by his beautiful, brilliant, home-schooled, 16-year-old
daughter, Dakota Root.
After their victory, the Barr campaign could have told their opponents
not to let the door hit them in the ass on their way out and saved
themselves a lot of future grief. Instead, we have seen a concerted
effort by Barr and Root to unify the party.
More importantly, I now believe Barr and Root are the strongest pro-
freedom ticket we've ever had and that, with your support, we can
have an enormous impact this November. These men are smart,
media savvy and determined to win. Considering that we are already
in a perfect storm politically, with a record level of voter discontent,
anything is possible. At the very least, John McCain is already being
discussed in MSM as a likely loser in November, now that Barr has
won the Libertarian Party’s nomination.
Bob Barr and Wayne Root won their nomination fair and square. Now
they are ready to carry the banner of liberty across the country and to
provide a wide spectrum of voters with a clear choice this November.
They deserve every ounce of support we can muster.

Kubby's initial letter (above) – MWB. ]
If anyone has an axe to grind with Bob Barr, it is me.
I've nearly been killed three times, as a result laws that he
championed. I still suffer physically from the toll on my body from
damage done to it when I was incarcerated and deprived of medical
marijuana. My brave wife was terrorized and threatened with the
removal of our children twice until she was forced to decide between
me and our daughters.We lived together of 10 years and never once
had a fight or an argument, yet now we are divorced. I still love her
and miss her terribly.
Despite a decade of suffering and watching friends die or endure
financial collapse, I have forgiven Bob Barr and I am asking others to
do so as well.
I'm not asking for anything in return, and I'm not concerned about
where we disagree. That's because we have a war waging around the
world and at our very doorstep. We don't have the luxury of debating
and consolidating our positions, because our freedom and dignity are
under assault as never before.
After the war has been won, there will be plenty of time for apologies
and ideological purity. Until then, we are in a state of perpetual war for
perpetual peace and unless WE act NOW, you can kiss your freedom
and your fortune goodbye.
Also, I have spoken to my LGBT friends and they tell me that they
were satisfied with Barr's answers in the debates. That's good enough
for me.
BTW, I've learned from two reliable sources that Barr took a $300,000
hit from Republican clients and supporters who walked out on him as
a result of his winning the nomination. If Barr is looking to capitalize on
the LP, he risked everything to be our nominee and damn near lost. I
respect that.
As for Wayne Root, I would suggest that he is innocent until PROVED
guilty. Tom Knapp and I are 100% behind Wayne right now and I
invite you to set aside rumor and speculation, and go to work
supporting our ticket.
I hear people say that Wayne sounds too much like a used car
salesman. However, I know Wayne will make the necessary
adjustments in his presentation, from infomercials to politician and do
a terrific job of representing all of us. Wayne is a gifted communicator
and a fast learner, so I am confident this concern will be addressed.
People say Wayne isn't really a Libertarian, but I can vouch for him
that he is Libertarian ENOUGH to do us proud. And Wayne is
changing and growing every day, so he is still open to further changes
in his views.
I also know that Wayne is very concerned about the medical
marijuana issue and ending the DEA raids. Wayne says he has never
smoked pot and I believe him. This makes him an extraordinary
champion for our cause. Having someone like Wayne represent us is
a fantastic gift, because he is so hard to ignore and his message is
totally mainstream.
Mary and I have spoken about this issue and she asked for 24 hours
to catch up on sleep and meditate upon what she wants to do. I have
no idea what she will decide, but if she endorses the ticket and calls
for unity, I would hope that everyone else can respect her decision
and immediately join in.
For those who are ready to get onboard now, the most immediate
problems we are facing are fundraising and ballot access.

quarter-inch (0.25”) around, with no headers or footers. If you send it
in a text-only format, make it clear to me if you want anything in bold
type, underlined, in italics, struck-through, different colors, etc. I’m not
telepathic here, so help me out. And NO Wordperfect files – I can't
open those.
Graphics (pictures, cartoons, etc.) – send the highest quality graphics
you can – email them to me at the address above, and I’ll do what I
can to get them in the next issue. In particular, what I want are
pictures of YOU the LPNM members, either at LPNM-sponsored
events or at other peoples' events.
Submission deadline for each issue – midnight, third Tuesday of the
month.
Articles
As for writing your article, It should be concise (no longer than a full
page) and topical. A bit of humor helps, especially for op-ed pieces.
What I'm really looking for in the way of articles is what's going on in
the LPNM – what YOU the membership are up to in spreading the
message. For example, an article about the stupidity, insanity and evil
of the UN might get put in, depending on available space and the
quality of the article. A group of LPNM members counter-protesting
the raising of a UN flag by the city council WILL get put in, and
probably will get first priority.
Editorial Viewpoint
The basis for libertarian thought is the Zero Aggression Principle
[ZAP] –
A libertarian is someone who believes that no human being
has the right – under any circumstances – to initiate force
against another human being, nor to threaten, incite or
delegate its initiation.
New Mexico Liberty holds that Libertarian candidates, officeholders or
appointed spokespersons at all levels of government or the Party
should refrain from advocating new or more restrictive laws, new or
more expensive spending programs, or new or higher taxes. To
paraphrase from the medical profession, “First, do no harm.”
