Houses or Habitats: Challenges in Housing
in Post Tsunami Reconstruction in Sri Lanka
• Housing can be termed the single most
important issue in post tsunami
reconstruction (PTR) in the country with over
125,000 houses totally damaged and
approximately another 75,000 partially
destroyed.
A team made up of Architecture for Humanity Design
Fellows and Sri Lankan based Relief International staff
proposed a building scheme that allows variation of
form based on a few standardized components.
The four variations include the basic design, a one-
one-
room addition, a separate structure addition, and a
combination of the one room and separate addition.
Ease of Construction: By using a limited set of
construction documents and a set material palette, the
homes can be easily adapted by builders to meet
individual family needs. This strategy accommodates
varying family sizes and uses while keeping
construction costs down.
The process can begin with a standard concrete pad
that will work for every design. The footings are on a
grid to accommodate future additions and simplify the
building process.
The walls are intended to be built from CMU block wall
or rammed earth. The block wall can be plastered to
add color, enhance the exterior appearance of the
home and create variation in the community.
 A clear-
clear-story ventilation system vents the entire building
while allowing light to filter in from above. Lower vents
allow cooler air near the ground to enter the house
forcing hot air out of the interior air vents in the roof.
 The over-
over-all design is intended to be simple and
repetitive with good architectural design to provide a
straightforward building process that will produce an
adaptive building that works well for the climate.
Extensibility: By building the roof to accommodate a
larger structure, we enable families to start with a
simple small dwelling and that can be easily extended
at a later date.
The roof extends over an open outdoor area that can
later be enclosed.
The standard concrete pad is large enough to
accommodate one addition and can be squared-
squared-off to
allow for a second addition
The side veranda has been enclosed with starter walls
that serve as seating and as a guide for future walls.
The roof system is designed to remain unaltered
through the addition process. Additions are intended to
be built underneath the existing roof and any new roofs
attach to an existing gutter
Quality of Life: The combination of shaded outdoor
spaces and flexible interior spaces creates a multi-
multi-
functional, livable and inviting home.
The side veranda can be used for cooking and sleeping
while the rear courtyard is designed to be a more
private area for women in keeping with local culture.
The variation of the house design is intended to provide
variety to the overall façade of the community while
allowing customization for the residents.
The additions to the house are intended to be multi-
multi-
functional; the side room can function as a private
room for extended families, or as a business storefront.
Once these projects have been completed, the finished
urban planning and architectural schemes (protected
by the Creative Commons Developing Nations License)
will be made available to other NGOs and local
communities so that this idea may be replicated — and
eventually, other regions affected by this tragedy.
With the observation that housing and the economic
and socio spatial network play a central role in their
livelihoods, it becomes evident that along with providing
shelter, enabling the revival and improving the
livelihoods of the affected communities stand out as a
key objective in housing.
in creating housing habitats, enabling the communities
to become key members in the housing process can be
identified as a key prerequisite in current scenario in
srilanka.
the technical professionals such as planners,
architects, engineers and building economists assume
the role of facilitators, assisting the stakeholders to
identify (a) the key challenges, namely, addressing
safety issues ( 100m reservation etc;) and what their
needs and aspirations in the short and long terms and
(b) options and choices in formulating solutions such as
locations of housing, the nature and extent of housing
and other facilities and their costs so that they can
make their collective choices in a participatory process.
Due to the disaster, housing is need in Sri Lanka in
present condition.
Housing should be much flexible so that people will
lean towards it.
 It should provide minimum requirement
 Should be economic.
 Should give homely feeling.
Should be within nature not excluding it
