I want to say a great big thank you first to all our wonderful

A number of years ago we were visited by a business consultant

faith that the news is entirely accurate (barring occasional

A recent survey of our staff revealed that every respondent was

importance of the news that we deliver to our communities and

On behalf of all of us here at Ossekeag, we want to wish
everyone a very, very, Merry Christmas and Season's Greetings.

Illegal dumping is misplaced solid waste and raises concerns

referred to as ‘open dumping’, ‘fly dumping’, ‘midnight

often dumped in open areas, from vehicles and, at times - late

An examination of the literature suggests economics and
low risk are factors affecting decisions to illegally dump.
More specifically, research indicates those who illegally dump
do so because they: Lack a sense of ownership; Believe

public awareness about the health and environmental risks.

“THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS” - HISTORY
A Visit from St. Nicholas", also known as "The Night Before
Christmas" and "'Twas the Night Before Christmas" from its
first line, is a poem first published anonymously in 1823 and
generally attributed to Clement Clarke Moore, although the
claim has also been made that it was written by Henry
Livingston, Jr.
The poem, which has been called "arguably the best-known
verses ever written by an American", is largely responsible for
the conception of Santa Claus from the mid-nineteenth
century to today, including his physical appearance, the
night of his visit, his mode of transportation, the number and
names of his reindeer, as well as the tradition that he brings
toys to children. Prior to the poem, American ideas about St.
Nicholas and other Christmastide visitors varied
considerably. The poem has influenced ideas about St.
Nicholas and Santa Claus beyond the United States to the
rest of the English-speaking world and beyond.
According to legend, A Visit was composed by Moore on a
snowy winter's day during a shopping trip on a sleigh. His
inspiration for the character of Saint Nicholas was a local
Dutch handyman, as well as the historical Saint Nicholas.
While Moore originated many of the features that are still
associated with Santa Claus today, he borrowed other aspects
such as the names of the reindeer. The poem was first
published anonymously in the Troy, New York, Sentinel on
December 23, 1823, having been sent there by a friend of
Clement Clarke Moore and was reprinted frequently
thereafter with no name attached. Only later did Moore
acknowledge his authorship, and the poem was included in an
1844 anthology of his works. Moore had written it for his
children, and being a scholar and professor, did not wish at
first to be connected with the poem, but his children insisted
that it be included in the anthology.
Moore's conception of St. Nicholas was borrowed from his
friend Washington Irving's, but Moore portrayed his "jolly old
elf" as arriving on Christmas Eve rather than on Christmas
Day."By having St. Nicholas arrive the night before, Moore
"deftly shifted the focus away from Christmas Day with its
still-problematic religious associations." As a result "New
Yorkers embraced Moore's child-centered version of
Christmas as if they had been doing it all their lives."
In An American Anthology, 1787-1900, editor Edmund
Clarence Stedman reprinted the Moore version of the poem,
including the German spelling of "Donder and Blitzen" he
adopted, rather than the earlier Dutch version from 1823,
"Dunder and Blixem". Both phrases translate as "Thunder and
Lightning" in English, though the German word for thunder
is "Donner", and the words in modern Dutch would be
"Donder en Bliksem". CH12

COMMUNITY FORUM HELD IN HAMPTON
School District 6 and the
Town of Hampton invited
local residents of the
Hampton area to a

and to discuss how, as a
school community, we can
continue to support youth.
The forum took place at the
Hampton Middle School in
the Leah McGowan Theatre
on Monday, December 6th at
7:00pm.
In the spring of 2010, and in partnership with Horizon
Health Network and the Town of Hampton, School District 6
administered an Attitudes and Behaviors: Profiles of Student
Life survey with Hampton area students. This same survey,
initially done in 2002, gave the community a starting point to
measure how students spent their time, their perceptions of
school and community life and their participation in a wide
range of risky behaviors. The results of the two surveys are
very interesting and were revealed at the forum. While
improvement was noted, it is evident that there are still
assets to grow.
The forum had many community participants from a variety
of backgrounds. A presentation was made on the results of
the student survey by the organizing committee and then
small breakout groups were formed to discuss the elements
of the survey and what things could be done to make the
Hampton area a more asset-rich community.
Results of these discussions are being compiled by the
Hampton Leisure Services Advisory Committee and will be
made available to the participants as well as any other

ORIGINS OF THE CHRISTMAS TREE
One of the most common symbols of Christmas - at least in
the United States and Canada - is the twinkling Christmas
tree, which is often depicted with piles of shiny gifts under its
bottom branches. The origin of the beloved holiday evergreen
has been debated for centuries, with some historians
asserting that it has Christian roots and others contending
that its roots are pagan. However, many explanations trace
the custom of having a decorated evergreen tree inside the
home to 16th century Germany, while others go back 300
years earlier to a tradition that began with the Miracle Plays
sponsored by local churches.
While its specific origin is unclear, we do know that the
Christmas tree tradition spread first across Europe and then
throughout the world. In the US, Christmas trees were first
seen in communities with prominent German populations in
the late 18th and early 19th century.
Throughout the world, Christmas trees are a symbol of the
continuation of life through the dark, cold months of winter

Email: bev.harrison@gnb.ca origins of the red-and-green Christmas theme have long been
debated, but the explanation that appears to be most deeply
rooted in fact begins in 14th century Europe, when Adam and
Eve's Day was celebrated each year on December 24th. At that
time, churches presented dramatic performances - called
Miracle Plays - that were intended to teach religious topics to
a largely illiterate population. For Adam and Eve's Day, people
gathered to watch the "Paradise Play," which presented the
story of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. Since no apple
trees were available in the middle of winter to represent the
Tree of Good and Evil on stage, a pine tree with apples tied to
its branches was used instead.
The use of a "makeshift" apple tree worked so well that many
churches adopted its use. The "Paradise Tree" eventually
became so popular in Germany that people started to erect
evergreen trees in their homes and decorate them with red
apples. Over time, the green of the trees and the red of the
apples became widely associated with the celebration of
Christmas. CH10

WHY DO WE SEND CHRISTMAS CARDS?

Dating back to the Victorian Days, we find the origin of the
Christmas card. Sir Henry Cole and John Horsley invented a
card that displayed three panels. On these panels, several
pictures are drawn. On the middle panel there is a depiction
of a family at a festive table scene. The side two panels show
an act of Christmas charity, such as clothing the poor. At the
bottom of the card was written "Merry Christmas and Happy
New Year." Perhaps this origin dates back even a bit further
with something known as "Christmas Pieces." Young British 3:15pm - 4:45pm

RELAY FOR LIFE 2011 - "FIGHT BACK"
The organizing committee for this years' Relay For Life has
already begun its preparations in celebration of the 5th annual
relay and hope to make this the most successful so far. Many
of the recognized relay teams and volunteers are returning in
anticipation of a successful effort in the battle to eradicate
this disease.
The committee members, in conjunction with the Canadian
Cancer Society, would like to pose some questions to you: Do
you have a family member or know a close friend who is or has On behalf of the executive
experienced the battle against cancer?; Do you know that an
estimated 4600 New Brunswickers were diagnosed with and the members of
cancer in 2010 and an estimated 2000 have died?; Do you The Royal Canadian Legion Branch #28
know the four most common cancers are prostrate, lung, we wish you a
colorectal and breast and these are the cancers with the
highest mortality rates?; Do you know among males, the age-
standardized incidence rate for all cancers combined is
higher in New Brunswick than the national average due
mainly to the higher rates of prostate and lung cancer in the

province and the liver cancer rate is lower than the national and a
average?; Do you know among females, for all cancers
combined, the age-standardized incidence rate is slightly Happy & Healthy New Year
higher in New Brunswick than the national average, due to
lung and thyroid cancer in the province?
These are just some questions put to you to draw your
attention to the presence of this disease in our Province and
communities and the reason the Relay For Life 2011 will ask Royal Canadian Legion
for your support in the coming months.
Our Relay for Life 2011 motto is "Fight Back" and the date Branch 28 Hampton

sacred to Celtic Druids, mistletoe was believed to bestow life

to symbolize the emasculation of the old king by his
successor.

DEVOURING FRUITCAKE FACTS
The holidays and fruitcake have long been intertwined.
Fruitcakes are often mocked, detested and discarded. Few
gifted foods create such strong derision. However, fruitcake is
tradition. And as most people know, Christmas is all about
tradition. Fruitcake is an enduring tradition, most simply
because the food, well, endures. Most fruitcakes will last 8 to
12 months if wrapped tightly in plastic wrap and stored in an
airtight container. If frozen, their lifespan could be endless.

"SENTINEL'S" THERE FOR YOU
(But You Have To Register)
"Sentinel" is the new high-tech tool to help the Town of
Hampton and its Emergency Measures Organization (EMO) if
there is an emergency. It was recently installed in the town
and in several other southern New Brunswick communities,
including Saint John. While it has several components, the
one that will affect most people is the one that will notify us in
the case of an emergency.
While the EMO hopes an emergency will never happen, it has
to be prepared in case one does. One part of that preparation

of finding something for kids to do

the following tips.
-Take a vacation: Vacation is the easy
way out. Winter break might mark the
only time until summer that parents
can spend quality time with their kids
completely away from the distractions
of everyday life. Vacation can mean a

hitting the road.
-Teach kids some practical lessons:
Kids likely won't miss the classroom

merrymaking.
Although the specific origins of the chant are not known, it
possibly began as a Twelfth Night "memories-and-forfeits"
game, in which a leader recited a verse, each of the players
repeated the verse, the leader added another verse, and so on
until one of the players made a mistake, with the player who
erred having to pay a penalty, such as offering up a kiss or a
sweet.
The earliest well-known version of the music of the song was
recorded by English scholar James O. Halliwell in 1842, and
he published a version in 4th edition The Nursery Rhymes of
England (1846), collected principally from 'oral tradition'. In
the early 20th century, English composer Frederic Austin
wrote an arrangement in which he added his melody from
"Five gold rings" onwards, which has since become standard.

solutions to dealing with holiday clean-up.

SAINT JOHN ASSOCIATION
The first step is choosing environmentally responsible
for COMMUNITY LIVING
wrapping materials. Glossy, metallic or embellished
wrapping paper may not be easily recycled - or even
recyclable at all. Instead, look for wrapping paper that is
made from recycled materials and can, in turn, be recycled
once more. Consider wrapping gifts in plain, brown
mailing paper and decorate the outside with earth-friendly
paints.
Next, nix the tissue paper inside of gift boxes. It doesn't
really serve a functional purpose, except for further
delaying the reveal of the gift inside. Tissue paper alone
accounts for a lot of extra trash. Skipping it means a person
will be saving money and the environment. Here are some
other green cleanup tips:
-Designate a child or adult to gather the discarded
wrapping materials and sort the piles into trash. Ribbons
and bows can be reused, as can many gift boxes and bags.
-Shred paper items that are bound for the trash to reduce
their volume and require fewer trash bags for transport.
-Find out if a shipping store will take foam peanuts and air-
filled wraps to be recycled.
-Be sure to collect expired batteries and recycle them at a
facility that does so.
-Christmas trees can be taken down and sent for mulching.
Many communities collect trees after the season is over for
this purpose.
Because there is bound to be some extra garbage during
the holidays, individuals can take steps to curb trash in
other aspects of their lives this time of the year. Some ideas
include using cloth napkins and actual dishes and cutlery
instead of disposable items. Before purchasing new gift
paper, sort through last year's collection to see what items
can be reused. Cutting the front off of holiday cards and
using them as gift tags is another way to recycle. CH4
