•two rows to fight on ground with fifty arches to guard at the mount of archers (about
150m from the muslims camps
•archery under the command of abdullah bin jubair al-ansari
the messenger of Allah commanded them to stay still on the mountain regardless the
muslims win or despair

‘if you see us snatched into pieces by birds, do not leave this position of yours till i
send for you. and if you see that we have defeated the enemy and trodden on them do
not desert you position till i send for you’- sahih bukhari

the combat

•first encountered of combatant as tradition; talha bin abi talha al abdari (from bani ad
dar who held the standard) vs zubair al awwam r.a
•the fall of quraisy standard from one man to the other: talha bin abi talha -> uthman
bin abi talha -> abu sa’d bin abi talha ->musafi’ bin talha bin abi talha -> al jallas bin
talha bin abi talha -> artat bin sharhabeel -> shuraih bin qariz -> abu zaid ‘amr bin
‘abd munaf al ‘abdari -> son of sharhabeel bin hashim al ‘abdari -> a slave called
sawab..then the standard fell down to the ground and remained
•the spirit of faith overwhelmed the muslim
•the bravery of abu dujana
‘i am the one whom my intimate friend made covenant with, when we were under the
palm-trees on the mountain side..
the covenant that we mande was that i should not fight at the rear..
but fight at the front heroically with the sword of Allah dan His messenger’

the assasination of asadullah (lion of Allah)


•he was killed by wahshi bin hard- slave to jubair bin mut’im during fought with siba’
bin ‘abd al uzza
•wahshi speared him and the spear went down into his stomach and issued out
between his legs
•wahshi returned to quraisy camp and did not go out until he was freed by his master

bringing the situation under control by the muslims


•along with notable companions fought fiercely, effectively and efficiently
•the story of hanzala al ghaseel (hanzala bin abu ‘amir al fasiq) from wife’s lap to sword
fights and sorrow

the contribution of the archers squard to the battle


•they managed to stop the musyrikin horsemen lead by khalid al walid and abu amir al
fasiq
•the muslims were in full command whereas the musyrikin military finally staggered
and retreating
•the musyrikin left all motives of pride, dignity and their standard trodden by the feet of
the fighter and no one courages enough to approach it
•they also left abundance spoils of war on the battlefield
•their women fled in the mountains as recorded by abdullah bin zubair

the archers’ fatal mistakes 1

•early orders by the prophet s.a.w for the archers to hold their position on the mountain
whatever the outcome
•forty archers deserted their post, entice by too soon roar of victory as well as worldly
avarice for spoils of war
•others nine archers including leader abdullah bin jubair decided to abide by the
prophet s.a.w orders
•consequently the remaining archers left inadequately defended
•this event gave a golden opportunity for khalid al walid to exterminating all the
remaining archers with his cavalry from behind the mountain of archers
•the quraisy standard has been pickup up and hoisted by musyrikin women umra binti
alqama al harithiyah
•the musyrikin began to gathered their strength and stoodfast to fight again

•the messenger of Allah suprised to see khalid and his men


•the prophet had two option: to flee for his life and abandon his army or to take action
to risk his life; rally the rank of muslims again and work their way through the hills of
uhud towards the muslim camp
•the prophet took the second option and raised his voice to called the muslims to get
back together.
•this will give chance for the musyrikin to hear the shout and ran towards the
messenger of Allah.
•the muslims army divided into three situations:
a. first group-they ran away from battlefield
b. second group-they returned to battlefield but mixed with the musyrikin in such way
they could not recognise each other and consequently killed each other by mistakes e.g
the father of huzhaifah al yamani
c. third group-they were who cared for nothing except the messenger of Allah. they
were the notable and bless companions

the archers’ fatal mistakes 3

•rumours that the messenger of Allah has been killed- the steadfastness of anas bin an
nadhir (may Allah bless him)
•the encouragement of the muslims defend the religion of islam eventhough they heard
the rumours
•the attempt of abdullah bin ubay (hypocrites) to seeking assistance of security pledge
from abu sufyan
•there were only nine companions (7 ansar, 2 muhajirin) around the messenger of Allah
during the heavy blows from the musyrikin
•the prophet s.a.w risking his life by shouting
‘come on! i am the messenger of Allah’
•this was the time which peerless sort of love, self-sacrifices, bravery and heroism
revealed from the bless companions
‘he who pushes back those idolaters will be housed in paradise’
•all seven al ansar have been killed till the last of them; ‘amara bin yazeed bin as sakan

•two of the muhajirin whose with the prophet were talhah bin ubaidillah and sa’d bin
abi waqqas radiallahua’nhuma
•the musyrikin concentrated their attack on the prophet and looked forward to killing
him
•uthbah bin abi waqqas (musyrikin) pelted the prophet with stones; resulted his tooth
and lower lips being injured
•abdullah bin shihab az zuhri (musyrikin) attacked and cleaved the prophet forehead
•abdullah bin qami’a (musyrikin skillful horseman) struck the prophet violently on his
shoulder; resulted his iron ring helmet penetrated to his cheek
•the revelation of ayat
‘not for you (o muhammad but for Allah) is the desicion; whether He turns in mercy to
pardons them or punishes them; verily they are the wrong-doers’ ali imran:128

•the brave fight from the two bless companions; sa’d bin abi waqqas and talhah bin
ubaidillah
•qais bin abi hazim said as recorded by imam al bukhari
‘i saw the hand of talha paralysed. that was because he protected the prophet s.a.w
with it in uhud battle’
•the prophet s.a.w said as recorded by imam at tirmidhi
‘he who desires to see a martyr walking on the ground, let him look at talha bin
ubaidillah’
•at the awkward and most delicate circumstances Allah sent down His invisible Help
•after this moment at instance abu bakr r.a came defend the prophet s.a.w
•abu ubaidah bin al jarrah overtook abu bakr and rushed towards the prophets to dress
his wounds; to take out the iron helmet which penetrated the prophet’s cheek
•then came group of muslims army including abu dujana, mus’ab bin umair, ali bin abi
talib, ummu ‘amarah (woman), nusaiba bint ka’b al maziniya (woman), umar bin al
khattab (may Allah please them all!)

•the musyrikin attacked were severe to an extent that the messenger of Allah fell into
the holes dug and designed by abu amir al-fasiq to be used as trap
•the muslims had to protect the prophet s.a.w by any means ie. shielded the prophet
with their body; chest and back; abu talhah and abu dujana
•hatib bin balta’a (muslim army) managed to kill utbah bin abi waqqas (musyrikin- the
brother of sa’d bin abi waqqas))
•the messenger of Allah himself was involved in shooting arrows; he shot so many
arrows that the two ends of his bow flattened
•another sahaba, abdul rahman bin awf (muslim millionare) kept on fighting till his
mouth was hurt and got broken; he sustainded over twenty wounds, some in his leg
and that lamed him
•ummu ‘amara encountered abdullah bin qami’a (the musyrikin who struck the
prophet’s shoulder); struck him with her sword several times but not manage to kill him
•mus’ab bin umair (the person who the prophet entrusted to madina during the pledge
of aqaba) fought fiercely defending the prophet s.a.w; carrying the standard until both
his hand were cut off; he knelt down and shielded it with his chest and neck until he
was killed by abdullah bin qami’a
•abdullah bin qami’a mistakenly thought mus’ab was the prophet and shouted that
muhammad has been killed

•abu ubaidah bin al jarrah and abu bakr ‘competing’ each other on treating the wounds
of the messenger of Allah
•abu ubaidah lost his front tooth while removing the helmet which penetrated the bless
cheek of the prophet s.a.w
•the prophet himself ordered his sahaba to look after talhah bin ubaidillah immediately
•the muslims morale reduced drastically while the musyrikin rejoiced and believed that
their objective has been achieved
•the messenger of Allah however, passed the banner of muslims to ali bin abi talib
•the plan of withdrawal to the hillocks nearby by the muslims; all companions moved
towards the messenger of Allah
•Allah showed His bless to the muslims; during this bitter fight a desire to sleep
overwhelmed the muslim; as recorded in sahih bukhari, abu talhah said
‘i was one of those who were possessed by a desire to sleep on uhud day. on that day
my sword fell of several times. again and again it fell down and again and again i picked
it up’
•the prophet s.a.w managed to kill the archenemy; ubay bin khalaf as he promised
during makkah period (read: makkah period before hijrah)

•the final attack of the musyrikin towards the muslim at the hillocks; khalid bin al walid
with abu sufyan
•the messenger of Allah prayed that the musyrikin position should remain below the
muslim; so umar bin al khattab and other few muhajirin fought the musyrikin and drove
them down the mountain - recorded by ibn hisham
•the musyrikin then returned to their camp and started preparation back to makkah
•some of them including the women started to mutilating the killed muslims; as
recorded by ibn hisham- hind bint utbah (the wife of abu sufyan) ripped the liver of
hamzah and chewed it; she even made the ears and noses of muslims into anklets and
necklaces
•the role of muslim women such as ummu aiman (the slave of the prophet’s mother
amina), aishah bint abu bakr and ummu sulaim on the battlefield- carried water bags
on their shoulders and emptied them into the mouth of the muslims army
•fatimah bint muhammad washed and treated the wound of his father with his husband
ali bin abi talib brought the water
•the messenger of Allah had to led his companions in prayer in sitting posture due to
the wounds from his body
