The International Association for Humane Habitat (IAHH) is pleased to announce t
he Thirteenth International Conference on Humane Habitat (ICHH) 2011. It shall b
e hosted by Rizvi College of Architecture, Mumbai, India in association with the
Council of Architecture, (COA); Maharashtra Chapter of the Indian Institute of
Architects (IIA); Practicing Architects, Engineers and Town Planners Association
(PEATA), Forum of Colleges of Architecture, University of Mumbai; Maharashtra A
ssociation of Schools of Architecture (MASA); Indian Association of Schools of A
rchitecture; and the Commonwealth Association of Architects (CAA). ICHH 2011 sha
ll be held from January 28-30, 2011 in Mumbai, India.
We are pleased to invite educators, researchers, architects, planners, engineers
, social scientists, environmentalists, policy makers, administrators, developer
s, managers, corporate associations, non-governmental organizations, concerned c
itizens and students interested in planning, designing, constructing and develop
ing “Appropriate Infrastructural Development for Evolving Sustainable Humane Habi
tats” to actively participate in ICHH 2011
Theme: Appropriate Transportation and Infrastructural Development for Evolving S
ustainable Humane Habitats:
The world is urbanizing rapidly. The epicentres of this process are located in t
he Global South. Here, millions of people are projected to pour in to large and
small cities. The migrants, often having suffered badly under failing conditions
in the hinterland will look towards the city to provide a livelihood. Also, cit
ies will also experience demographic growth owing to reproduction of current cit
y dwellers. Cities in the Global South are already reeling under severe stress a
nd infrastructure is failing. One of the key ingredients which the burgeoning ci
ties need to equip themselves with is appropriate transportation and infrastruct
ure that enhances liveability and ensures equal access for all in the city of to
morrow.
‘World-class City’ has become a cliché synonymous with metropolitan urban development.
Smaller and medium cities too, not having a plan of their own, try to brainless
ly embrace this. This approach often results in inappropriate, uneconomical and
unsustainable transportation systems and infrastructure being built which furthe
r puts economic and environmental stress on the already degrading – both economica
lly and environmentally – cities world over in general and cities in the Global So
uth in particular. With this understanding, we aim to develop strategies at inte
rnational, national, state and regional levels for ‘appropriate transportation and
infrastructure development’ for evolving sustainable humane habitats.

We need to review the existing infrastructural development policies and plans at
international, national, state and regional level to critically evaluate if the
existing infrastructure is adequate and if the plans for next two-three decades
are in place to meet the future demand for infrastructure in a rapidly developi
ng world. We would like to discuss the change that is required in our policies a
nd programmes for appropriate transportation and infrastructure development to e
nable evolution of sustainable humane habitats.
Urban and Rural Infrastructural Development: Strategies & Programmes
We are aware that world over architects, engineers, planners and policy makers h
ave been experimenting along with the private, government and non-government org
anizations to plan, design and develop appropriate programmes for urban and rura
l infrastructure development. We would like to know about such experimental and
successful strategies and programmes of transportation and infrastructure renewa
l, up gradation and development from different countries and cities.
Appropriate and Innovative Infrastructure Design and Construction
Appropriate infrastructure designs and plans for power, transportation, communic
ation, water supply, drainage, sewage collection, treatment and disposal, refuse
collection, recycling and disposal systems. Infrastructure sector provides uniq
ue opportunities to architects, engineers and planners to design appropriate, af
fordable and sustainable infrastructure using innovative approaches. It would be
interesting to share these projects and works in the field of transportation an
d infrastructure design.
Social, Cultural, Health Care, Educational and Recreational Infrastructure.
Along with technical and physical infrastructure, supporting social, cultural, e
ducational, health care and recreational infrastructure in promoting development
of sustainable communities and enables development of sustainable humane habita
ts.
Appropriate Transportation Systems for Evolving Sustainable Humane Habitats
The case studies of traditional, modern and post-modern habitats including conse
rvation, revitalization, redevelopment and development of appropriate transporta
tion and infrastructure development and new sustainable communities with public
transportation systems, mix land use, pedestrian friendly networks and innovati
ve policies and programmes in evolving sustainable humane habitats.
