Who grades the exam? How are the exams graded?

ELA 9-12 Standardized Testing

The principal is responsible for arranging for a scoring
coordinator, who:
 Provides specialized training for the scoring
process.
 Manages the logistics of the scoring process.
 Assigns two teachers to rate each task
separately, and a third teacher to settle any
differences in scores.

 Each school must have a reliable system for
collecting, organizing, and processing scores before
rating begins.

Who takes High school Regents Comprehensive Exam?
All students in Grades 9 – 12, except:
 English Language Learners who have been living in the
United States for less than a year may be exempt.
 Students with disabilities sometimes take a general
assessment or NYSAA (New York State Alternate
Assessment) instead. This is decided case by case.
 Students who are medically incapacitated are exempt,
when providing a doctor’s note for the school to keep on
file.

 Rubrics are provided to assure scoring accuracy,

which consider Quality (e.g., meaning,
development, organization, language use and When is the High school Regents Comprehensive

 Beginning January 2011, the High school Regents
Comprehensive Exam in English will be given in
winter. It will be administered in three hours on one
day.

Comprehensive Exam in English Format

Beginning January 2011, there will be changes to the

Part 1: Listening Passage. 8 One-credit Multiple High school Regents Comprehensive Exam in English,
Choice. including:

Part 2: One Literary Passage/One Informational
Passage. 6 each One-credit Multiple Choice.
Part 3: Two Literary Passages linked by a common
theme. 5 One-credit Multiple Choice. 2 Two-credit
Short Constructed-Response, one on the controlling
idea and one on the literary element or technique from
one of the passages.
 There will be only one essay.
 There will be only two short-constructed response
questions.
 The same learning standards and performance
indicators (1 – 3) will be applied.

Part 4: Critical Lens Quotation. Six-credit essay

applying the quotation to literature read for school.

What if a student fails the exam?

If a student fails the regents exam, and they need the course
credit, they must retake and pass it in order to receive a
regents diploma.
