Ridge High School. The
night of December 2, 2010,
the second Mr. CRHS was
crowned. The contestants

this event in the CRHS
Auditorium. The auditorium
was packed and attendants
filled up nearly every

The CRHS Drum Corps
started off the show with
a bang and a bong and
silenced the crowd in awe.
Then the BPA President, Ms.
Lucy Crowley, welcomed
the crowd and introduced
the Master of Ceremonies,
Mr. Cliff Hall. Sariah Lopez
and accomplice sung the
National Anthem and
the show was underway.
The gentlemen and
ladies came out in their
evening wear and walked
across the stage proudly.
Everyone was dressed to
the nines and paraded
across the stage to stand
in a line. As the ladies
escorted the young men
backstage, the CRHS
Dance team performed
for the audience. Then the
contestants were escorted
back to Mr. Hall’s side to
answer impromptu silly
and serious questions.
The crowd laughed and
applauded at the answers
given by the contestants
and the judges narrowed
in on who might be
the possible Mr. CRHS.

The CRHS Cheer squad
performed next and did a
cheer and a dance. Then
the talent started off with
Braden Coleman, who
presented a video for
the crowd to enjoy. Zaki
Abdul performed next
after several technical
difficulties and sang “Just
the Way You Are” by Bruno
Mars to his escort, Kelly
Ann Buddeke. Kevin Brown
then showed a hilarious
skit and starred as Justin
Bieber as he fixed his hair
and the CRHS Cheer squad
surrounded him and later
became his background
dancers. Brian Skinner and
Garrett Hall also helped out
and became background
dancers for Kevin. Jake
Silvester’s pantomime with
performers, T.J. Richardson,
Brady Skinner, Madi Mason,
and Ben Keller, sent the
audience into upheavals
of laughter and applause.
Jake Warner rolled
out a piano and sang
“Superman” by Five for
Fighting. Dunia Emmanuel
showed a funny video
made by him and several
friends. Aaron Cutler played

delicious, the meals are
usually not one’s favorite
part of Christmas. Many
individuals look forward to
the meals, but they are not
the highlight of Christmas.
Christmas is also the time
of year when people
decorate their homes with
bright lights and snazzy
decorations. This is also a
factor of Christmas that is
enjoyed, but not favorite.
Now we’re getting to
the good stuff: Presents.
What seems to be the most
popular part of Christmas
is the exchange of gifts.

There is a lot of
controversy over the Nest
and Hawk Shop. Everyone
has their favorite between
the two. So how do you
know which one to choose?
It’s not too hard; just choose
the one that floats your
boat.
“I like the Nest because
they are full of sweet
goodies for me to eat in the
morning,” stated Ramona,
senior. Yes, the Nest does
have a lot of sweet treats. “I
like the Nest because they
do not charge taxes and they
have more snack options
and the brownies are huge!”

Whenever the holidays
roll around, there are always
two things on everyone’s
mind; food and presents.
Well I love the present of
holiday food. It only comes
twice a year, and I mean
c’mon I intend to enjoy and
savor every bit of it.
The main dishes
families prepare are the
typical turkey with stuffing
or the heavenly ham. I
myself prefer ham. With all
of its seasons and delectable
flavors that the turkey just
cannot measure up to.
The turkey can be
dry, and only have some
seasonings and there is all
of the dark meat that no
sophomore. By the way,
the Nest does charge taxes;
it’s already added on. Anna
Arutyunova, senior, claims,
“I just love the Nest because
they have coffee and more
options. It’s just delicious
and great!”
Others, like Brandon
Collins, senior, love the
Hawk Shop. Brandon states
that the, “Hawk Shop is
better. I help run it.” The
Hawk Shop also has a

are great and can only be

pineapple. Then one can
also eat the pineapple and
that in itself is a concoction
of flavors that can make any
mouth water. It cannot dry
out, and it tastes amazing
no matter what it is topped
with from the feasting table.
I love ham, and I dislike
turkey. In my family, we
found at the Hawk Shop.
To add another vote for the
Hawk Shop, Chelsea O’Neal,
junior, states that she likes
the “Hawk Shop because
they have better food and
make deals.”
It’s a mixed decision
about which shop to choose.
Seriously though, go for
your favorite. The nest does
have a lot of great snacks
and they are keeping the
surprises coming, but you
can’t find baked potatoes
and slushies anywhere else
around the school. If you
seem to be having a hard
time choosing, just get one
thing from both shops and
you’ll be happy.

Be smart, don’t spread germs

The winter months are
slowly but surely sneak-
ing up on us. With snow
storms and windy days in
our midst what is Canyon
Ridge going to do to keep
down the spread of germs?
The steps are simple, but
with consistency we can
keep our students from
being home sick and we

the effects of the economy
in Twin Falls, Idaho. Even
though the recession has
been declared over, stu-
dents still have problems at
home with financial stress.
Many cannot afford the
extra activities some may
take for granted. The reces-
sion has stolen funds saved
up to buy school clothes,
groceries, and even Christ-
mas presents. Everyone
in the Magic Valley needs
to be aware of the lack
of money and watch for
the bell ringers from the
Salvation Army this year.
Many families benefit
from the donations made
to the Salvation Army, and

Every year the holi-
days come and go. One
gets to have a nice relax-
ing Christmas Eve with the
family. Playing games and
sipping on cocoa, eggnog
or some spiced apple cider.
So peaceful. Then it’s off to
bed for the little ones that
dream of the candy that will
be over flowing from their
stockings and the presents
that Santa will be leaving
them.
When awoken, their
tiny little bodies will be
filled with excitement as
they dash to the living room
for the Christmas treasures.
As they tear through the
stockings, the candy and lit-
tle knick knacks fall on their
laps. Gobbling up as much
as they can before being
handed their presents.
Eyes glued to the glis-
tening paper that lines the
delicately wrapped pres-
ents. Not caring about rip-
ping the paper, thrashing
through the boxes to get to
the ultimate prize. Hearts
filled with happiness and
joy, knowing that Santa had
not forgotten them.
Now try to imagine
the family across the street.

of their buildings including:

tree would be, there is a cor-
ner. No presents, only emp-
ty carpet. For the family that
lives here, the only Christ-
mas present they will be re-
ceiving this year, is the one
of warmth and a place to lay
their head. If they even have
that luxury.
Christmas is a hard holi-
day to get through. With all

and many think that this
rule is absurd because

others. Snowball fights can
be fun, entertaining, and
very enjoyable, but every
year students abuse the
opportunity to practice safe

It’s been a long wait,
being that the last snow
day was in the winter of
the 2003-2004 school
year, up until November
19, when our thirst was
finally quenched. It was
announced that the Twin
Falls School District had
canceled school that very
day. Students excitedly
jumped for joy. Some ran
outside to build snowmen;
some plunged to their PS3’s,
and some just scurried back
to bed.
Rumors have been
spread across the years
that Wiley Dobbs,
superintendent of schools,
has refused to give away
a snow day. Since these
rumors were started, there
has been between little or
no hope and expectation
for a snow day. The news
was shocking the night of
November 18, when parents
were notified by telephone
that there would be no

Jimmy McMillan, also
known as “Jimmy Mack” or
“The Black Hulk Hogan”,
“Papa Smurf”, “Santa Claus
on Venus”, and “Rambo”,
had something to prove
during the 2010 New York
gubernatorial election, and
that is that the “Rent Is Too
Damn High”.

he’s best known for being
the founder of the “Rent Is
Too Damn High Party”.
It all started in 1993,
when he ran for mayor of
New York as an Independent.

he was tied to a tree and
soaked with gasoline. Later
in the election he climbed
the Brooklyn Bridge and
refused to come down
until a television station
would broadcast his
message. Eventually he was
disqualified after coming
three-hundred signatures
short on a petition to qualify
him for the election ballot.
His next attempt was
for governor of New York in
1994. This time his gimmick
was traveling from Brooklyn
to Buffalo (the site of the
Democratic convention)
on foot, staying in different
homeless shelters along
the way. When he reached
Buffalo, he disrupted
Governor Mario Cuomo’s
speech, and was thrown
out for heckling. He again
failed to gather enough
signatures to make the
ballot, and entered as a
write-in candidate.
In 2005 he first ran
with the “Rent Is Too Damn
High Party”. He was able
to qualify for the ballot as
mayor, and received over
four thousand votes. In
2006, he ran for governor
again, and received 13,355
votes ranking fifth out of
six candidates. In 2009 he
returned to run for mayor,
under the “Rent Is Too High
Party”, which was changed
due to lack of space on the
ballot, and McMillan only
received 2,615 votes.
In 2010, he ran for
governor of New York on
the “Rent Is 2 Damn High”
line after the name was
changed back, replacing the
word ‘too’ with the number
‘2’, in order to fit the whole
phrase on the ballot.
“He’s a weird man
honestly,” said Canyon
Ridge senior Taj Larson,
“but I’d vote for him.” Larson
believes that a candidate
like McMillan would be
able to get things done
quickly, and create a lot of
change. Larson also noted
on McMillan’s appearance;
“He looks like he’s from the
Civil War.”
McMillan wants to end
poverty, unemployment,
payment decreases, and
hunger in New York City, and
is able to state his point with
his catchphrase, “breakfast,
lunch, and dinner “.
Although he’s been far
from winning every election
he’s ran in, McMillan’s
brought entertainment
and comedy to politics,
lightening up everyone’s
hearts during election
time. Even if he hasn’t been
able to lead the people in
government, he has been
able to relieve stress and
burdens from the people’s
shoulders through his
charismatic personality.

Homemade Christamas decorations

Christmas trees are on
display, children lay awake
at night anticipating Santa’s
arrival, and frankly…tis’
the season. To many, their
homes are simply decked
out in the finest of Christmas
décor and truly possess the
season’s joy. For others, the
celebration of decorating
for Christmas is put off until
the very last second due to
procrastination. Fear not
fellow procrastinators,
In case you might not
be in favor of the traditional
Christmas decorations,
you’re in luck, I have
discovered a simple way
to spice up any room with
yuletide cheer. Using simple
materials such as Styrofoam
and glitzy garlands, you’re
on your way to making a
Christmas tree centerpiece.
The materials you will
need are as follows: Two 12
inch foam cones, wrapping
paper, 3-4 feet ribbon and
sequin garland that matches
the wrapping paper, 1 inch
sequins, 3-4 feet beaded
garland, two sets of 3 round
beads, and 1 inch round
punch (optional).
Now that you have
all the necessary supplies,
you are ready to make
garland trees by following
these directions: 1. Cover
your cone with wrapping
paper by using glue or craft
pins. 2. Add the garland by
attaching one end of ribbon
and sequin garland to the
top of cone with pins. Wrap
around cone until you reach
the bottom.
Once this is done you
should glue both ends of
the garland. 3. Fill in the
blank spaces of the cone

Christmas is the happiest
time and it puts big smiles
on everyone. People are
everywhere shopping here
and there for presents.
Anxious to plan for a
Christmas feast, some
families travel around the
world, to another state,
or just stay home for the
holidays. Christmas is
dynamic in every way
whether people travel or not.
There are so many
ways one can celebrate the
happiest time of the year.
There are different cultures
and people that everything
is different. Some students
here at Canyon Ridge
High School all have their
own plans and ideas for
their Christmas vacations.
Some leave for
California while others
take off to maybe Mexico
or Arizona to escape the
freezing temperatures,
but either way there’s
a bundle of excitement
when the people are able
to do it with their family
and friends or whoever
else joins them. Christmas
is just that time of year
where anything is possible.
It’s true that
traveling during a holiday
is expensive even now
more than ever and it’s
more complicated to go
someplace, but some
people still do it. With
Christmas, everybody
spends their Christmas
differently, but like most
people Joanna Orozco says
that, “The holidays are to
enjoy time with the family
and have fun with friends.”
In that case then

difference when saying that
her plans for Christmas is,
“Instead of the usual stay
at home with the family for
Christmas Break I plan to
do all that and more. I plan
to help out my family with
the baking, cooking, and

sleeping in their family
vehicle since their parents
have lost their jobs and park
at different places during
the night to get sleep. They
help out the community
often and always go out
of their way to say “hi” to
everyone. Since they’ve
made such an effort to
bring joy to every family
they see, even though they
sometimes fail to bring
their own, it would be my
wish to help give them a
Christmas worth enjoying.”
During this special time of
the year money isn’t the
most important thing in
someone’s life, but instead
it’s a smile. Some plan to
be with their families and
have lots of fun. Others
plan to help out those
in need and give them a
memory they won’t forget.

is celebrated almost
everywhere around the
world in many different
ways. For centuries we
celebrate holidays in
certain ways, but one may
wonder why we celebrate
the way we do and how
these ideas originated.
Everyone loves to
kiss under the mistletoe;
it’s an excuse to finally kiss
that special someone. The
ancient Celtics believed
mistletoe had healing
powers; they used the
mistletoe to ward off
evil spirits. The Romans
thought it was a symbol
of peace; they would
lay their guns under the
mistletoe and embrace. The
custom we celebrate today
possibly originated with
the Scandinavians; they
brought the plant together

receiving Christmas cards.
It sends a message from
someone that only words
can describe. The first
Christmas card began in
England in 1843 with a
meaning that not everyone
agreed with. The first card
sent out had a picture with
a group of men drinking
alcohol. Mixing Christmas
with alcohol did not make
some happy. Freshman
Justin Bohr states, “I like
Christmas cards because
I like Christmas and I like
the cards with music.” To
this day Christmas cards
are improving; instead
of just a plain white
card with thoughtful
words, technology has
made it where people
can record a message
into the card instead of
writing down a long,
meaningful paragraph.
Candy canes
are those sweet treats
that not everyone can
resist. When they began,
they were only in use to
decorate the holiday tree
by the Europeans; but
as the years went by, the
sweet treats were given
to keep children quiet at
ceremonies and nativity
scenes. The colors on the
candy cane have different
meanings; for instance the
white represents Christ’s
purity, the red is for the
blood Christ shed, and the
three stripes represent the
Holy Trinity. For whatever
reasons the candy cane
was made, it’s a candy

everyone knows what that
means; snowball fights!
Snowball fights involve
much strategy, like the
right tools, the right snow,
and a good snow fort.
To start off the
right snow is needed, the
kind that sticks together
and is a little wet and not
too powdery. Snowballs
need to be tightly packed
so they will have quick fly
time. The quicker fly time
they have can make all the
difference when it comes
to throwing a snowball.
Make sure there is a snow
shovel nearby when having
an extreme battle. Also
a very good constructed
snow fort is necessary to
win an epic snowball fight.
There are many
different types of snow
forts, but only one will win
a snowball fight. The right
height is a very essential
part of the snow fort. It

CR welcomes District IV Drama

Whether it was a big,
stuffed purple chair or
students dressed all in
pantomime black, drama
students from all over
District IV were in evidence
on November 13th, 2010,
here in the hallowed halls
of Canyon Ridge High in
order to compete in various
drama events for the day.
District Drama competition
is the precursor to
determine those who will
compete in dramatic events
at the state level, and
competition was fierce and
fun for roughly 250 drama
students, coaches and
judges involved that day.
Canyon Ridge had its
own drama team competing
in a variety of events:
Ensemble Pantomime,
Serious Ensemble,
Humorous Ensemble,
Humorous Solo, Original
Humorous, Original Serious,
and Costume Design.
Students demonstrated
their skill in either an
acting or technical event,
and their performance
was a reflection of the
rehearsal process done in
Introduction to Theatre,
Intermediate Acting or
Advanced Acting. Students
were scored in each round
of performance by a judge,
and each round gave
students an opportunity to
improve and receive points
toward the final outcome.
The CRHS Drama team
presented itself with poise
and professionalism. All
students were given either
a superior or excellent
rating; one ensemble and
one solo entry in particular
received honors above the
rest: Allyson Humberger
in Humorous Solo is an
alternate to State Drama,
while the Ensemble
Pantomime students
took first place at District
Drama and earned a place
to compete in Nampa at
State Drama on December
3rd and 4th. Jake Silvester, TJ
Richardson, Madi Mason,
Ben Keller and Brady Skinner
represented Canyon Ridge
this year at State Drama.
When asked how he
felt about State Drama
competition and the
likelihood of success, Jake
Silvester said, “I have mixed
feelings about State. It
was stressful yet amusing
last year—but definitely
a good time! This year it
[Pantomime Ensemble]
should do pretty well,
but it depends on what
everyone else brings to the
table. I have confidence
that we will break into
the semi-final round.”
So, if you see a drama
kid walking down the
hall, ask him or her how
they did at either District
IV competition or State.
It is almost a guarantee
that the answer will be
entertaining and enjoyable.
44th annual CMA Awards

Every day millions of
adults, teens, and children
listen to country music.
Some are farmers some
are businessmen, some
are politicians, and some
are students. Some live in
Idaho, and others live in
Florida; many things that
separate us all, but one
thing unites listeners every
year, the CMA Awards.
The CMA’s are
legendary; in the first
ever award show Eddy
Arnold, Jack Greene, and
Loretta Lynn were the
stars. This year, in the
44th annual award show,
the major stars included
Miranda Lambert, Blake
Shelton, Lady Antebellum,
and Brad Paisley.
As most of us know,
the Entertainer of the Year
award is a big one; to many
it’s the highest honor. This
year’s winner happened
to also be one of the hosts
for the third year in a row,
Brad Paisley. Brad won the
award for the first time over
Miranda Lambert, Lady
Antebellum, Keith Urban,
and the Zac Brown Band.
One of the next awards
in line for ‘the highest
honors’ is; Male Vocalist of the
Year. This year’s nominees
were Dierks Bentley, George
Strait, Blake Shelton, Brad
Paisley, and Keith Urban. In
the past, George Strait has
won 22 CMA Awards, so
many thought the legend
would take it again, others
thought the rising star
Keith Urban would win,
or maybe Brad, Blake, or
Dierks. When it came down
to the wire tensions were
running high and finally it
was announced that Blake
Shelton was the winner.
It appeared that in
this year’s awards, Blake
Shelton’s fiancée, Miranda
Lambert was definitely
the super star; she was
nominated nine times in
six categories. Miranda
took home the trophy
in Album of the Year with
her hit CD, “Revolution,”
Song of the Year with “The
house that built me,” Music
Video of the Year with “The
house that built me,” and
one of the highest honors,
Female Vocalist of the Year.
Another successful
country group was the hit
trio, Lady Antebellum. They
proudly took home the
Vocal Group of the Year, and
the Single of the Year with
their audience-favorite,
“Need You Now.” The group
was also nominated for
Entertainer of the Year, Album
of the Year, Song of the Year,
and Music Video of the Year,
unfortunately falling short.
Other winners were
“Sugarland” for Vocal Duo
of the Year, “The Zac Brown
Band” for New Artist of the
Year, and Blake Shelton
featuring Trace Adkins
with “Hillbilly Bone” for
Musical Event of the Year.
As always, live
performances are a huge
part of the Country Music
Association Awards. This
year Carrie Underwood,
Rascal Flatts, Blake Shelton,
Miranda Lambert, George
Strait, Zac Brown Band
feat. Alan Jackson, Kenny
Chesney, Taylor Swift,
Sugarland, Kieth Urban,
Reba McEntire, Jason Aldean
and Kelly Clarkson, Brad
Paisley, Lady Antebellum,
and Kid Rock finishing off
the show with “Born Free”.
Many have enjoyed
watching the CMA’s as far
back as they can remember,
and each year it amazingly
keeps getting better and
better. Will the legends like
George Strait, Reba, and
Martina MacBride continue
to shine? Will Miranda
Lambert, Blake Shelton,
and Lady Antebellum
continue moving up the
ladder of country music?
Will new faces such as
The Band Perry, Love and
Theft, and Eric Church
get their break through?
Will new bands emerge?
These are all questions
that will most certainly be
answered in next year’s 45th
annual CMA Awards, but
until then, keep it country.

or another we have all pon-
dered the question: How
did Mr. Dumpty come to be
shattered before us? This
question has baffled philos-
ophers since the beginning
of time. Was our beloved
eggman pushed? Being the
scientifically superior indi-
vidual that I am, I have re-
vealed the true story of the
Humpty of Dumpties.
I began my research at
the place where it all hap-
pened: a castle in England
named Fort Crackme. As
I began to search for evi-
dence, I noticed the many

candy canes were invented
in 1670 by a choirmaster at

It started a long time

months ago? Now this was
back in the dinosaur age
when the Land of Oz was
first established, and Mr.
Tarchione and Mr. Belliston
were first born. The first
munchkins were tired of
eating dirt and rocks; most
of them broke their teeth on
these “hard candies” of their
time and could only eat the
floor of Oz.
One Sunday when the

was reading his morning
paper, on an article on the

he consulted his Munchkin

Christmas is coming
and presents are considered
to be one of the best parts
about the holiday. Every-
one looks forward to that
morning when they open
their eyes, run underneath
the Christmas tree, and tear
apart wrapping paper. What
they are expecting is some-
thing completely amazing
and worth the wait, but
sometimes what is received
is not what was expected.
One of the absolute
worst gifts is anything to do
with a diet plan or a mem-
bership to the gym. No one
wants others to take notice
of their waist size. Another

dence of the Humpty Case, I
tasted like peppermint and
celebrated the Christmas
season. The head Munch-
kin wanted it to be named
“candy” and said, “They
must be in the shape of a
cane, so that when I turn old
and gray, I may put them to
good use. Therefore we will
call it the Candy Cane.” Bel-
liston sent Tarchione to the
chocolate factory to consult
Mr. Wonka.
Tarchione took a long
journey through, what
Fairy Godmother would
call, “Blithering winds and
scorching deserts. He
climbed to the highest
room in the tallest tow-
er,” and yet that was not
enough torture. He came
into contact with his arch
enemy the wicked witch
of the west, Mr. Zuercher.
This wicked witch ques-
tioned Tarchione about his
journey, and of course he
gave in to Zuercher, spill-
ing about the secret candy
formula they were looking
for. Zuercher continues to
pick on Tarchione by mak-
ing him name ten candy
bars, giving him swirlies in
the outhouse, and dumping
him in the trash repeatedly.
Just when Tarchione
thought his life would never
get better, Fat Albert came
to his rescue and said, “Hey,
hey, hey! Which witch wants
to play?” With that, he threw
the wicked witch Zuercher
bad idea would be getting
a box full of bitten out of
chocolates. Forrest Gump
said, “Life is like a box of
chocolates, you never know
what you’re gonna get.” Well
Forrest was right, one will
never know what they are
gonna get if all of it is gone.
Many people could eas-
ily take things the wrong

touchdown is but few
people know what a shot
rock is. With football being
the most known sport in
the United States, curling
is possibly the least known
sport. Rock curling is an
Olympic sport, involving
a huge rock, a sheet of
ice, and two brooms.
The game is played by
brushing the ice, causing it
to create a pathway for the
rock that is positioned on
the target on the ice sheet
to help the team. The team
that has the highest amount
of points based on where
their stones are placed
on the target wins. The
team can decide whether
to knock the other team’s
stone off of the target or
get their stone in a good
scoring position. Curling is
more about strategy and
logic than physical and
muscle power, which is
why it is often referred to
as “Chess on Ice.” The game
has been an official winter
Olympic sport since 1998.

curling sheet, the curling
stone, and the curling

position. Her coach, Kristi
Mishler says, “Bonnie was
an excellent player, and her
good attitude and smile
helped keep the team’s
spirits up and going.”
Bonnie also loves
basketball. She began
playing recreational
basketball in fifth grade
and worked her way up
to the varsity level seven
years later. Her coach Kim
Wray has been coaching
her in basketball since 8th
grade. Bonnie generally
coached at the previous
level. “I was ecstatic when
I got the job here,” says
Ridgeway.
Even last year, as the
Hawks finished their measly
4-18 season, there was no
heat on Ridgeway from the
fans. The flashes of brilliance
that were somewhat rare
through last season were
enough to allow patience
on their parts, but now that
time is up and the pressure
is on.
Canyon Ridge High
School is returning four of
five starters. Ten out of its
eleven varsity players are
championship banner. Jared
Berry, Junior, says “Duke is
really good, I think they are
going to the championship
again. “At number two,
there is the Michigan
St. Spartans. With great
guard play returning and
their lock down defense,
anything is possible for
this Spartan squad. The
number three team is the
Kansas St. Wildcats. Jacob
Pullen will have to be the
leader of this young team,
but with an explosive
offense it shouldn’t be too
hard. Ohio St. Buckeyes are
number four. With the big
broom; all three are vital
parts to the game. The
curling sheet is the actual
sheet of ice that the game
is played on. It is 146 to
150 ft and has a target or
a house on the end. The
house has three rings and
all three are different colors
to differentiate between the
outer, middle, and center
ring. The ice nowadays is
usually refrigerated, but
back in the day, the game
was played on a lake or pond.
The name curling
comes from a description of
the movement of the stone.
The curling stone is much
like a football. It is the main
object of the game and is
put into scoring position.
The stone weighs between
38 and 44 pounds and has
a handle attached to the
top to push it harder and
rotate the stone the way
it needs to go. The stone
is made of granite. There
are eight stones per team
to be thrown. Curling
brooms have changed
much over the years, going
from corn stalk brooms to
fabric brushes. The curling
broom is used to change
the friction in front of the
stone being a means of
directing the stone towards
the position it needs to

start until 1996, with the

ten clubs. Since ’96, MLS
has developed six new
clubs, one of them being
across our nation’s border,
in Toronto, Canada. Still in
a stage of development,
Major League Soccer has
taken three United Soccer
League (semi-pro) clubs
to advance into the MLS.
The Vancouver
Whitecaps were founded
in 1974 and played in the
North American Soccer
League (NASL), until the
league dissolved in 1984.
They were reintroduced
to the Canadian Soccer
League (CSL) in 1986, as
the Vancouver 86ers, but in
1993 they merged into the
United Soccer League (USL).
In 2001 they changed
their name back to the
Vancouver Whitecaps, due
to the nearby mountains

games, called the BCS, are

are Auburn and Oregon.
This game presents two
of the most high-powered
offenses in the nation and
