LESSON PLAN LEA AMBION

Algebra 1 Period 3, 4, 6 December 1, 2010

Agenda: LESSON TITLE: Unit 5, Section 6.1: Line of Best Fit

1. Warm-Up: GRADE LEVEL: Freshman/Sophomore High School
2. Individual work TEXTBOOK OR RESOURCE AND RELEVANT PAGES:
time on Line of Best Algebra I Carnegie Learning Student Text pgs. 251-258
Fit in book OBJECTIVE: Given a table of data, students will be able to
3. Homework: create a scatter plot, draw a line of best fit, find an equation of a
Continue Line of line of best fit and use a line of best fit to make predictions.
Best Fit work in book STANDARDS BEING ADDRESSED:
 A1.1 A Select and justify functions and equations to model and
solve problems.
 A1.1 B Solve problems that can be represented by linear
functions, equations, and inequalities.
 A1.2 B Recognize the multiple uses of variables, determine all
possible values of variables that satisfy prescribed conditions, and evaluate
algebraic expressions that involve variables.
 A1.3.A Determine whether a relationship is a function and
identify the domain, range, roots, and independent and dependent variables.
 A1.3.B Represent a function with a symbolic expression, as a
graph, in a table, and using words, and make connections among these
representations.
 A1.3.C Evaluate f ( x ) at a (i.e., f ( a ) ) and solve for x in the
equation f ( x ) = b .
 A1.4.B Write and graph an equation for a line given the slope and the y-intercept,
the slope and a point on the line, or two points on the line, and translate between
forms of linear equations.
 A1.4.C Identify and interpret the slope and intercepts of a linear function,
including equations for parallel and perpendicular lines.
 A1.6.D Find the equation of a linear function that best fits bivariate data that are
linearly related, interpret the slope and y-intercept of the line, and use the
equation to make predictions.
ASSESSMENT OF LEARNING: Students will be assessed individually during their
time to do homework in class.
MATERIALS: pencil, notes, Student Text

o Ask if there are any questions from the Line of Best Fit homework from
yesterday. Work on HW problems if there are any questions.

 (15 minutes) Go over Investigate Problem 1 in text with students.

 (20 minutes) Student will work Investigate Problem 2 and 3 in class.

REFLECTION:
Ideally, I would like to have a warm up or something that helps students
reconnect with previous material at the beginning of every class but today, it was difficult
to get through all of Investigation Problem 1 AND give students enough time to get
through the problems in the book.
Next time, I may try a more hands-on approach for the line of best fit problem
like have students gather their own data, however this would depend on whether or not I
believe the students are mature enough to complete a hands-on lesson plan.
I would most definitely not do a problem/lesson like this again because the only
time that students were remotely productive was when they where copying what I was
writing on the board.
It was a difficult decision to make to make students merely work on problems in
their books but my cooperating teacher and I decided that it would be the best approach
for the students we have this year.
