McCURTAINSTOWN’S CORMAC
IS TOP KIWI KID ROCKER

Youghal’s magnificent music tradition has just been enhanced in
New Zealand, where a national success story is found to have
strong connections with the town. School band Rock Per Minute
have been voted Best Kiwi Kid Band in the second annual ’Nick
Rocks’ contest run by renowned children’s media-entertainment
service Nickelodeon. The line-up includes Cormac Seymour, gui-
tarist and vocalist and grandson of Eddie and May O’Brien,
McCurtainstown, Front Strand.
Eddie and May’s daughter Lorreto is married to builder Joe
Seymour, whom she met in Australia. Eleven years ago she and
Joe settled in New Zealand, where Cormac was born a year later
and where Loretto is a nurse. The family live in the charming,
temptingly titled Bay of Plenty on North Island’s Pacific Coast.
They visit Youghal every few years, most recently last Christmas.
The search for Best Kiwi Kid Band drew 70 entries from through-
out New Zealand. Each act submitted a cd, with the three finalists
filmed in performance prior to the final online/text voting process.
Impressively, RPM submitted a jointly penned number, Second
Chance, which was aired on Nickelodeon throughout August. The
winner’s have already had Second Chance recorded and video’d by
Nickeledeon, to run online and on TV from Sept 21st. Recording
allowed the band a tantalising taste of the fruits of rock stardom,
as they, their parents and music teacher Tim Acker travelled on
expenses to Auckland for two days. "We stayed in a beautiful
apartment overlooking the Auckland Harbour. The boys had an
endless supply of food and drinks and were kitted out in new
clothes by a clothes label here!" says Loretto, who is no doubt now
wondering why on earth she opted for nursing! Further awards
include interviews on NZ national radio station Classic Hits and in
Upstart magazine.
The band, formed in 2005, also reached the last three in 2007.
They describe their music as "rock and pop" and Loretto cites their
influences as "Foo Fighters, U2, John Jackson, plus NZ bands
Opshop and Pluto" and hope to stay together through high school
at least.
Proud of his her son’s "well deserved" success, Loretto refers to
weekly guitar lessons, daily acoustic practice and band rehearsals
every Friday’s at school. "They also practice every second
Saturday next door at Rory’s (the drummer) as that’s where he
drum kit is!", she adds. "Us parents are getting quite good at set-
ting up equipment and being roadies," says Loretto, determined to
hang onto the rock ’n’ roll lifestyle for as long as possible -or until
some ’real girls’ eventually start arriving on the scene, no doubt!
Meanwhile, at No 2, Eddie and May O’Brien are "absolutely
delighted" with their grandson’s success. "He has always been
very good on the guitar", says Eddie who, along with May, last
visited their daughter and family two years ago.
As the Strand Church sacristan, Eddie’s duties would once have
embraced bell ringing, but despite this admittedly tentative evi-
dence, he modestly declines credit for any musical influence on
his grandson. (If only Bob Dylan had sung about The Chimes
They Are A-Changin’). "His uncle plays music so I think it comes
from the other side of the family,". In any case, Rock Per Minute
may well ring a bell for music fans in the years to come.

Youghal Scouts at
Jamboree in Punchestown
Last month 14,000 scouts gathered in Punchestown for a week
long camp to celebrate 100 years of scouting. A large group of 22
scouts and 4 leaders travelled from Youghal to the sun drenched
fields of Kildare for the action packed week. The Group was led
by leaders Ned Brennan, Angela O Brien, James Smiddy and
Sinead O Connell. The scouts enjoyed a variety of activities from
water sports to air activities including helicopter rides and the
thrills of a variety of roller costers. The highlights of the week
were Air Day, meeting new friends and a game called "Assassin".
The group hopes to travel to France for Summer Camp next year.
Despite the rain the scouts had a great camp.

It’s Ploughing Season in Knockanore!
While some still wait for that much longed for Summer Weather,
they are moving on over in Knockanore and once again this year
they are hosting their annual Knockanore Ploughing Match. This
years competitions will be taking place on Saturday next
September 20th - starting at 1.00pm sharp. The venue for this
years ploughing will be posted on all roads. This is always a great
family day out so do come along view the ploughing and be sure
to join Mary and her team for a cuppa at the tea tent.
Later on Saturday evening the Bride-Valley Boys ( and girls) will
be along to entertain us at the Shamrock Inn everyone is welcome
and a great night is assured.

Sympathy
The death took place on Wednesday September 3rd of Jim O Brien
Kilnafrehan Dungarvan, reposing at Drohans Funeral Home
Dungarvan Jim’s removal took place on Thursday evening to
Kilgobinet Church and following requiem mass on Friday after-
noon Jim was laid to rest in the adjoining cemetery. The huge
attendance at both the removal and funeral mass and burial are a
fitting testimony to the popularity of this quite and unasuming
gentleman, who was well known and respected in farming, eques-
trian and sporting circles throughout West Waterford.
Our deepest sympathy is extended to his devastated family his
wife Patricia his sons Paul, Dermot, Seamus and Tomas his
Daughters Fiona and Honor and a wide circle of relatives and
friends, by whom he will be dearly missed. Ar dheis de go raibh a

Music Appreciation
Music Appreciation is a community education programme where
participants will share musical styles-Instrumental families-
includes a concert visit -listen to music and requests from the
group all in good fun.
Music Appreciation is a ten-week programme, which commences
at Kinsalebeg Community Hall on Tuesday night September 23rd
and runs each night form 7.00pm- 9.00pm. The total cost for the
ten weeks is 50 and there is a reduction for Social Welfare recip-

Death of Kevin Kearns
Our deepest sympathy is extended to the Kearns family on the
death of dearly loved husband father and Grandfather Kevin
Kearns, The Mews North cross Lane-Youghal Lane Youghal.
Kevin died following a short illness at the University Hospital
Cork on Tuesday September 1st. His wife Maureen survives
Kevin, his children Sean, Terry, Kirby and Brian his brother,
grandchildren, relatives and a wide circle of friends by whom he
will be sadly missed.
Reposing at Egan’s funeral home Youghal Kevin’s removal took
place to St Mary’s Parish Church on Thursday evening. Following
requiem mass on Friday afternoon Kevin was laid to rest in the
adjoining cemetery. May he rest in peace
Choir resumes
Once again our choir under musical director Mary Dee has
returned to our churches, it commenced on Saturday evening last
September 13th to the 6.30pm Vigil Mass in Piltown. We look for-
ward to hearing more of our regular voices back and we always
welcome new members - if you wish to join us just come along to
the 11.00am mass in Clashmore on Sunday next .

Eddie strikes gold again

Eddie Mulcahy has clocked up anoth-
er one for the record books winning no
less than four gold medals at the 2008
world Championships held on the last
weekend in August in Dunboyne
Eddie was also honoured by James
Nagle of the Irish Throwers Club in
conjunction with the world throwers
association when he was presented
with the Perpetual trophy.
There are exciting times ahead for
Eddie in 2009 as he has been invited
to the British Championships, which
will take place in Stoke - on - Tent in
April 2009. So for Eddie training has
already commenced for the coming season! Congratulations to

Junior Football defeat
Well done to our brilliant group of ladies who played a great game
against Abbeyside last Wednesday night in the Junior Football
Final in Kilrossanty. The girls played an excellent game and with
just five minutes to the final whistle, it seemed the title was with-
in our grasp. However a devastating goal followed by two quick
points from our opponents was just enough to secure the title for
Abbeyside. Again thanks to everyone who braved the damp cold
weather conditions and came out to support us.

Last weeks Clashmore - Kinsalebeg GAA Club lotto draw will
take place at the Rising Sun on Monday night we will have a lotto

On Thursday afternoon September 4th our members returned to

A new era dawned in Clashmore on Monday Sept 1st
As pupils returned to their classrooms for another school year at
Clashmore National School on Monday Sept. 1st was an over-
whelming experience as it was a first day for all in their newly
refurbished beautiful state of the art school. Also for the first time
in many years growing numbers of pupils have allowed us to have
a four teacher school. Well done Terry McCarthy and his team for
completing the project on time and everyone involved in getting
this wonderful building for us here in Clashmore.

At our weekly poker classic at the Ole Mill Kinsalebeg the ladies
continue to dominate when Gemma McSweeney was last

ers are always welcome to join us. Games start at 9.30pm each

Tidy Towns Report
The national Tidy towns competition published its annual adjudi-
cation report for 2008 this week and we are delighted to report an
overall increase in points of 5 on last years results. The report,
which we will include in the next issue, gives some very encour-
aging tips. So well done all keep up the good work.
Death of Freddie Lennon
This week we are deeply saddened to report the unexpected death
on Monday last of Freddie Lennon Ballinamultina Clashmore.
Reposing at Egan’s funeral home Youghal. His removal took place
to Clashmore Church on Tuesday evening and following requiem
mass on Wednesday Freddie was laid to rest in the adjoining ceme-
tery. To his sisters Essie Walsh [Youghal] Maureen Coughlan
[Aglish] his brother Toddy [England] his very dear friend Mary, all
his family relatives, neighbours and many friends we extend our
deepest sympathy. May he rest in peace. Full obituary next week.
 YOUGHAL TOWN COUNCIL SEPTEMBER MEETING

Report of the Town Clerk
HOUSING MATTERS:
1. The Planned maintenance contract for the remaining houses at
Dermot Hurley Estate is due to be signed within the next two
weeks. The contract has been offered to Glounthaune Property
Developments Ltd at a value of 158,340. It is anticipated that the
appointed contractor will commence works in early October.
2. All the planned maintenance tender information for the second
phase of Blackwater Heights has been forwarded to the Architects
Department of Cork County Council for the preparation of tender
documents with a view to going to tender within the next two
months.
3. The 23 bungalows currently under construction at Killeagh
Road are due to be completed and allocated by the end of the year.
ROADS:
1. Approximately 40% of the regeneration works are completed
on Church Street. The Archaeological finds on the street were sig-
nificant and of great interest. Evidence of the finds will be dis-
played on the street when the project is completed.
2. The De Valera Street Car Park is well advanced and should be
completed and operational by the end of October. This Car Park
(37 Spaces) should greatly alleviate parking congestion in the
area.
WATER AND SEWERS:
1. The reservoirs are currently at full storage capacity with an
average daily demand of in excess of 600,000 gallons per day. I
am unaware of any problems with the Waste Water Drainage
System currently and all Pump Stations seem to be working satis-
factorily.
MISCELLANEOUS:
1. The Enterprise Centre is due to be completed by 20th
September next and Formal handover should take place that
week. Fit out should take approximately three to four weeks. Open
days will be advertised in respect of the Centre shortly.
2. The Budget 2009 meetings will commence from October
onwards. Next years Budget will represent a challenge for all con-
cerned. The Department of the Environment have already issued
formal letters requesting the Local Authority to cut expenditure
and payroll costs by at least 3%. (A copy of the letter has been for-
warded to each member of the Council)
Votes of Congratulations.
Mayor Olly Casey congratulated the Rev. Michael Thompson on
being ’instituted at St. Mary’s Collegiate Church’ last Monday
evening and promised to hold a civic reception for him at a ’later
date in the Mall Arts Centre’. The Mayor also heaped praise on
athletes, Nikita Savage and Michael Healy for their recent suc-
cesses in competition. He said both competitors were products of
Youghal Athletic Club and are ’heading for Olympic quality’. He
extended congratulations to Pobalscoil na Tr on ide for the excel-
lent marks secured by pupils in the Leaving Cert results. Cllr.
Linehan-Foley afforded unqualified praise to members of Youghal
Tidy Towns and Youghal Town Council’s outdoor staff following
the announcement that Youghal claimed first place in the Cork
County Ant-Litter competition. She also offered praise to all those
involved in the Medieval Fun Day.
Town Foreman’s Report.
The Mayor said the ’last site to the left before the Cul de Sac’ at
Sweetfield ’looks desperate’. He asked if the owner of the site is
known to the Council. He acknowledged the Council is to com-
plete a fence there while a private fence has been erected to pre-
vent the site being used as a short-cut. Cllr. Linehan-Foley again
condemned Wiser Bins for holding up traffic while collecting
refuse. She said it was unacceptable that the traffic flow should be
affected during the seasonal months. We’ve spoken to them
(Wiser), to the Garda and the traffic warden. Can we look at the
by-laws to change the times they are allowed to operate on the
main street? she asked. The Cllr. pinpointed the problem when
she said the driver of the bin lorry had to stop to pick up the bins,
therefore causing extended delays. Cllr. Beecher was quick to con-
cur and accused the refuse company of polluting the air with
odours that are a ’health and safety issue’. Cllr. Murray added that
the Local Business Community intend on meeting with Wiser
Bins to discuss alternative operating hours. The County Manager
warned that the Town Clerk could write to the Director of the
Environment to revoke Wiser Bins licence. Cllr. Linehan-Foley
informed members that the steps at Green Hole are ’lethal’ while
she expressed concern that the structure of the lighthouse hill
promenade which overlooks the rocks and bay might not be
entirely safe. Looking up from the strand the iron holding it up
doesn’t look 100%, she said. Cllr. Burke sought information on a
number of items including works for a broken footpath at 29
Sweetfield, incomplete footpath at Windmill Hill, a bus shelter for
the post office stop and an inquiry as to the reopening of the
Millennium Playground. Cllr. Hennessey informed the Council of
’overhanging trees’ at the graveyard. She also asked that the jail
steps be cleaned on a daily basis and that the hedging there be
trimmed. She concluded by citing the increasing traffic congestion
at the junction of Raheen Rd. and Cork Hill. She said cars are
parking on both sides of lower Raheen Rd. making the two-way
passage very difficult. Cllr. McLellan expressed satisfaction that
grass has been cut in the Copperalley area but asked that the loose
cuttings be collected. She stated the graveyard lodge ’is in bad
repair’ and asked when will a bollard be erected at the bottom of
Windmill Hill. The Cllr. had two requests for Raheen park; one
was for money for a new lawnmower for the lower section of the
estate and a disabled parking space for the centre outside no. 38.
She also remarked that this area suffers from heavy traffic conges-
tion. Cllr. Murray said the footpath on main street between Sean
Twomey’s and Conn Keogh’s requires remedial work. She added
that ’visibility is poor at the SpÆ and that the area also has pot
holes. She concluded by asking when the ’St. Raphael’s bend will
be taken away?’. Cllr. Savage said he had received a ’lot of ques-
tions’ regarding the Millennium Playground. He complained that
the Railway Station has become ’the largest derelict site in town’.
The Cllr. criticised CIE stating, ’any other owner would have to
clean it up’. He said there had been 2-3 break-ins at
McCurtainstown during the summer, suggesting that if the long
grass were cut at the rear of the houses such anti-social behaviour
might not happen. Cllr. Beecher asked for an update on the ligts
and steps at Knockaverry. He informed the Council that the brick
pavement at Dr. Kennedy’s Place needs to be weeded while he
noted a bollard was removed from Dominic Collins Place and
needs replacing. He also cited holes and weeds on a Cork Hill
pavement and wall. He said loose stones at Blackwater Heights is
a ’recipe for disaster’ and asked for more ’children at play’ signs for
the estate.
Cork County Council Items.
Cllr. Casey called for the ponding at Nagle House to be dealt with.
Cllr. Linehan-Foley said the entrance to Quarryvale is ’deadly dan-
gerous’ and is an ’accident waiting to happen’. She asked the Town
Engineer to look at it as people are ’not heeding the yellow lines’.
Cllr. Revins noted a number of ’serious pot holes’ at the junction
to Kilcoran Rd.. Cllr. Savage complained the smell emanating
from the Youghal landfill site continues to pollute the air. For
how long more do the people of Youghal have to put up with
this? he demanded to know. He said the outfall pipe at front
strand was ’supposed to be done for July’. The Town Engineer said
he had a guarantee the job will be done soon. The Cllr. then asked
that the down shoot be repaired on the Clockgate and weeds be
removed from its walls. Cllr. Burke required information on the
blue flag status for Redbarn Strand, the ponding at Gallagher’s
Terrace, the extension of double yellow lines at the Coast Guard
station, broken footpath at Strand Street and the Cork Hill traffic
management report. Cllr. McLellan stated that the odour from
Foxhole is ’so bad people are gagging’. She said the situation is
’just not good enough’. She cited a secondary problem when she
noted anecdotal evidence suggesting lorries are not exiting from
Foxhole (as per preplanning agreement) via the by-pass but
’through the town ’. Cllr. Hennessey asked that the road markings

be upgraded at Nealon’s Quay. She also cited the danger at
Quarryvale and suggested the extension of the double yellow
lines. She concluded that a ponding problem has manifested at
Springfield Court. Cllr. Beecher complained of ’disturbances at
Claycastle’ and asked that rubber ramps be installed ’immediately’.
He asked why there is a delay on the work on the footpath between
the Leisure Centre and the front strand. He sought information on
the proposed disabled space for Raheen Park, the odour at
Foxhole, the link road between Blackwater Heights and
Woodview Court. He advised members of a pot hole at Quarry
Road and outside the Devonshire Arms Hotel and warned that a
broken gully cover at Hillview will cause an accident. Cllr.
Murray stated that work on the road at Sheehan’s garage is ’badly
done’. She asked for an update on the work at SruthÆn na Sal and
was advised it would recommence next week. She informed the
Council that lights are out at Kent St. and at Cal Flavin’s. She crit-
icised the ESB for causing the delay to works at the Aura Leisure
Centre footpath. It’s not good enough, she said. She concluded
that the smell from Foxhole was ’putrid over the weekend’.
Responding to comments on the Foxhole odour, the County
Manager explained. There was an acceptance of waste material
which was a sugar waste product. The decomposition of the waste
was brought to the surface as a liquid by extreme rainfall. It
proved difficult to cover. The contractor is complying with regu-
lations as much as possible. The material is being covered and
they are trying to complete the cover. The landfill won’t be taking
in food material again. The Manager went on to say that a further
report as part of Cork Regional Waste had stated that the ’vast
majority of waste could be redirected to Kinsale Road’ in the
future. She said the Youghal landfill would reach maximum intake
in Dec. 2009/Jan. 2010. She said smaller amounts of waste will be
accepted up to June 2009 with an ’accelerated amount up to clo-
sure over the last six months’. A number of Cllrs. then comment-
ed on the situation asking for an investigation from the
Environmental Protection Agency with Cllr. Beecher stating he
was ’convinced’ that the odour is ’being released from the sludge
plant at night’. It’s controlled,’ he said. Cllr. Linehan-Foley said
the odour was not from the landfill as it is ’the same smell for
weeks’. Following this issue, the Town Clerk wished to return to
other matters regarding works in the town. He warned that the
Council has been asked to curb its expenditure. He said ’ongoing
maintenance cannot be kept up’. Next year will be an even greater
challenge, he predicted. He said the last two budgets saw ’spend-
ing cut to the core to minimize rates’. The County Manager told
Cllr. Burke that she is expecting a report on the Blue Flag soon but
tempered the news by stating it was a difficult year for the three
beaches because of excessive rainfall. She also said the 25m
drainage programme for Youghal is at the ’design stage’. However,
she asked members to use political influence to make sure the
funds are downloaded to pay for the works and referred to the ’cur-
rent economic climate’ as a possible obstacle. The Town Clerk
expressed urgency and looked to go a step further by suggesting
a deputation go to the Minister for the Environment.
Mayor’s Business.
The Mayor paid compliments to the work of East Cork Area
Development and their ability to garner funds for various pro-
grammes and individuals. Cllr. Hennessey proposed a civic recep-
tion for Paddy Neville after 21 years service to the Ambulance
service. Cllr. Linehan-Foley said there were a number of people in
a similar position and thought it wiser to hold a reception for com-
bined recipients.
Decision of Cork County Council to amend the Draft County
Development Plan New Town at Annaghmore.
The Town Clerk informed members of his opposition to the
amendment and stated the County Manager’s objection to a devel-
opment that ’runs contrary to the Cork Area Strategic Plan’. The
Town Clerk warned that a new town would adversely affect the
projected population increase of Youghal and would in turn dilute
funds that would have been forthcoming to the town. He advised
that the Council strongly object to the amendment.

Cllr. Revins said he was optomistic of having news on funding for
the Millennium Park next month.
HERITAGE MUNICIPAL POLICY COMMITTEE-
REPORT SEPT. 2008
The following is an update of all that has taken place since June
2008:- Church Street
Work has been underway in Church Street for a number of months
as part of the Heritage Regeneration Plan for Youghal and already
the archeological investigation under Dan Noonan has revealed a
major find. The remains of a cobbled sandstone walkway has been
uncovered which dates from the 12th or 13th Century.
Excavations are due to continue as far as the gates of St. Mary‘s
College and further exciting finds are anticipated.
Medieval Fun Weekend
Unfortunately inclement weather forced the abandonment of the
planned Saturday evening concert at St. Mary‘s College Gardens.
However the weather improved considerably for the Sunday and a
great day‘s entertainment was enjoyed by an attendance of 5,000
people.
Failte Ireland Signage
Approval in principle has been given by Failte Ireland for signage
in the historic core of the town. This will enable Youghal Town
Council to effectively highlight three walking trails. The principle
trail is the Youghal Historic Tourist Trail incorporating all the
great heritage features of Youghal, i.e. Clock Gate, Benedictine
Priory, The Red House, Tynte‘s Castle, Boyle‘s Almshouses, Sir
Walter Raleigh‘s House at Myrtle Grove, St. Mary‘s Collegiate
Church, St. Mary‘s College and Medieval Gardens, The Town
Walls, St. Mary‘s Parish Church, The Quaker Meeting House, The
Water Gate and Mall House. Two other subsidiary trails will also
be signposted namely the Medieval Garden Trail of the College
Gardens, and the Graveyard Trail of St. Mary‘s Collegiate Church.
The enhancement of these trails with heritage signage will greatly
add to the visitor experience of Youghal and add to its status as
one of the most important heritage towns of Ireland.

and preparing for Medieval Weekend, in particular Catherine

Report on Hatherton Ltd., T/A Enterprise Youghal.
Cllr. McLellan advised that the ’underpinning at the tower at St.
Mary’s is complete’. She added that 80% of the snag list is now
completed as is work in the courtyard. She said sample application
forms, License Agreement and Handbook were shown to the
directors. She stated that a ’web design for the Enterprise Centre is
currently being worked on’ as is a brochure. She concluded that
the project co-ordinator is studying case studies of how other cen-
tres are run and that 20th September is the date nominated for the
handover of completed works.
Motion in the name of Cllr. Casey seconded by Cllr. Burke.
That this Council provide designated parking for the residents of
DeValera Street, in the new car park on that street.
This motion created some controversy in the chamber and no lit-
tle debate as the Mayor sought to solve the issue on the night. He
began by responding to a letter from the Town Clerk, which had
been furnished to all members outlining his objection to the
motion on a number of grounds. The Town Clerk’s stated in his let-
ter that the motion raised ’serious issues for Youghal Town

letter that the motion raised ’serious issues for Youghal Town
Council and its members’. He outlined the background to the
issue, mainly that DeValera St. become parking free and that per-
mit holders would be transferred to a new car park. He stated. It
was specified at the time that there would be no designation of car
spaces, and this was never raised by Residents at the time. He
went on to state that ’on street public spaces...are for all members
of the public’. He said the motion, if adopted, would ’effectively
make this (new DeVelera park) a private car park’. The Town
Clerk pointed out the financial implications saying that designat-
ing specific spaces would represent benefit in kind to residents
and a loss to the public of approx. 15,000 per space. (the motion
seeks a designation of 17 out of 27 spaces). The letter goes on to
state that the Town Clerk sought confirmation from the Local
Government Auditor and was advised that loss of revenue due to
a members’ decision could lead to those members being
penalised. The Town Clerk went further to say that property could
be devalued should rights be given to individuals on Council prop-
erty and would also compromise utility of that property in the
future. He concluded. I strongly recommend that the motion be
withdrawn. Irked but determined, the Mayor was forthright with
his reply responding to the Town Clerk’s objections. He said the
Council’s decision in 2002 to transfer the permit holders on
DeVelera St. to a new car park could ’only be achieved by the des-
ignation of 17 spaces (one per house, permit holders only). In
response to the Town Clerk’s argument that on street public spaces
are for all members of the public the Mayor replied. It is clear
that the practice of allocating public spaces to business and others
has been used in several areas of the town. He then listed ten
areas and their uses, such as: Casual Trading, Trolley Parks, Bike
Spaces, Loading Bays etc. On the matter of financial implications
the Mayor responded. The motion does not state that any space
would be allocated to any specific property. He added that ’no
rights’ would be allowed to ’any individual property or person’. He
said the allocated spaces would not be numbered but could be used
at any particular time by the residents. He added. It was never
intended by Youghal Town Council that car parking charges would
be used as a source for generating revenue for the Council.
Regarding the threat of an Auditor’s penalty, the Mayor betrayed
some irritation. I was very disappointed to read the implied threat
of the Auditor to recover funds from supporting members . There
is no basis for this threat, he said. Mayor Casey then had a sting
in the tail for the Council by citing the allocating of spaces by the
Council to the exclusion of the public. He pointed out that
Officials, staff members and others in the Council park their cars
on both sides of the Mall House. He added that there was no issue
or threat with regard to the future use of the car park. He said the
Council could use the property as they see fit because ’such pow-
ers are the reserved function of the Town Council’ and suggested
(with no little irony) that a multi-storey car park was one example.
When concluding, the Mayor said he had worked on his response
day and night since receiving the Town Clerk’s letter and had in
fact ’lost sleep’ over the issue. He then called for a vote on the
motion. The County Manager was quick to remind the members
of setting a legal precedent. What about other householders? she
asked. Cllr. Savage said the members were being put in a ’very dif-
ficult position’ because all the members ’sympathise with the resi-
dents’. He asked for a deferral or a special meeting to explore more
possibilities. He said he would vote for the residents but added.
The Council’s value for money with 17 spaces is not good. Cllr.
Linehan-Foley said she had signed an agreement to relocate the
residents. She said she could not go back on her word. We’re
responsible, where are they supposed to put their cars? she asked.
Mayor Casey said it was a case of ’justice and equity’. Cllr.
McLellan said residents had been ’parking there for decades’ and
supported the motion. Cllr. Murray offered an alternative: ’one
way (up lane),with 3hour parking limit and exemption for resi-
dents’. The Mayor said he was ’not prepared to defer’ the motion.
This prompted Cllr. Revins to claim he would not vote but ’seek
legal advice’. The Town Clerk said it was ’his duty to point out the
financial and legal implications’ and that his letter was ’not person-
al’. The Mayor wanted a resolution. Cllrs. can vote. Stand up and
be counted. If it’s defeated, so be it. Vote for what you believe in.
Cllr. savage declared the issue was being ’handled badly’ and that
the members were being ’forced to vote’ though he added, ’nobody
here is afraid of the auditor’. It was then called upon to vote for a
deferral as called by Cllr. Savage. This was defeated by 7 to 2.
Cllr. Murray then said she wanted to submit an amendment. She
reiterated her earlier suggestion (one way, 3hr. Limit). Cllr. Burke
(quicker than you could say ’free space’) said. A point of order,
that is not an amendment but a new motion. After much heated
exchange the Mayor again stood his ground calling on democracy
to reign over indecision. A vote was taken on the motion. Cllr.
Revins, Murray and Savage abstained while Cllrs. Burke, Casey,
Linehan-Foley, McLellan, Hennessey and Beecher voted for. The
motion was carried 7 to 2.

That Youghal Town Council liaise with Bus Eireann to improve

ty of relocating the existing shelter about the width of the footpath
back to the car park. There may be a loss of one car parking
space. Thus ensuring that traffic continues to flow in both direc-
tions when bus is parked.
Cllr. Beecher supported the motion, stating, The back of the bank
is a dreary place. Cllr. Linehan-Foley said she would ’not support
the motion’. She said the members had ’unanimously agreed to
shift the bus stop to Catherine St.’ One person complained. Half
the town is in uproar over it, she complained. Cllr. Revins con-
curred. I can’t support this, we all agreed to move the bus stop,
Speaking on her motion, Cllr. Murray said the proposed back
street bus stop was a lonely spot. I wouldn’t like a daughter of
mine or an elderly person or myself to be left standing there on a
Winter’s night. The motion was voted on and defeated by 7 to 2.

YOUGHAL COMMUNITY
DRUGS INITIATIVE
On the 5th June 2007 Youghal Community Drugs Initiative was
set up in Youghal. The purpose of the project is "to enable target-
ed young people in the community of Youghal who misuse or at
high risk of misusing alcohol or drugs, to involve themselves in
their own development". As most people are aware by now I am
leaving the project on Friday 22nd Sept. Most recently I have been
successful in a career move in the same line of work but I will be
working at a regional level more so now. I would like to take this
opportunity to give the people of Youghal an overview of what has
been done in the project since June 2007.
There are currently 32 young people accessing the service at dif-
ferent levels of drug taking in Youghal. These levels would be
covered in 5 stages of change: 1.Not recognising the need to
change2. Recognising the problem and is considering change3.
Preparing to get ready to change4. Initiating change and 5.
Maintaining change. These stages of change are a process and not
an event which is measured in small steps rather than Giant steps.
Also the project currently has 26 Families members accessing the
service for support and advice in helping them cope with dealing
and responding to people close to them that are using drugs and
alcohol. From this a family support group was formed and is run-
ning now nearly 12mths. Each individual in this group has brought
about significant change in their lives. They can learn to cope bet-
ter and also be free of the blame and the "It’s my fault syndrome".
Other work of the project would have included: Working closely
with Youth reach, the secondary school in Youghal, Involved in
advocating for the ASAP programme to local GAA clubs and
working closely with Local GPs.
The project has also been involved in setting up Acupressure mas-
sage which is run by a therapist weekly for parents which is very
successful and a Stress management course for people which has
just finished.
There are two people from the community who have been suc-
cessful in qualifying for a place in "Diploma non formal guidance"
which is been run from UCC this year. Part of this curriculum
involves further involvement in the project.
Someone new who is professionally suitable for the job will begin
work in Youghal very soon. It will take time for that person to take
up the work and fit into the position. I feel this is an exciting time
as this person will also bring more talents to the job and fresh
ideas to move it further. I would like to take this opportunity to
thank everyone in the community that has been part of the project
and in fact my life in a professional manner over the last few
months. Without your involvement the project would not be what
it is today. I have seen young people and families take courage’s
steps to bring about change in their lives’. I have seen members of
a community involve themselves further in education to make a
difference for the future of their community. Foroige and the
Southern Regional Drugs Task force take a partnership approach
in communities affected by drug use. The bigger picture of this
plan is enabling people in a community to do something about
their drug issues and to help them grow and develop into people
in society that have a purpose. This plan is about the people of
Youghal accessing the service....this is about them... it’s about
their community, ...it’s about them not been alone and it’s about
courage to make a difference for the young people and future of
Youghal which I feel privileged to be part of".

The Chairperson of the Youghal Red Cross, Elaine Mulcare wel-
comed everyone to the night s proceedings. She complimented all
those who had spent their time learning skills that would be of
benefit both to the community and themselves. She added that a
Red Cross Certificate is valuable because it has world wide recog-
nition and she hoped that after three years everyone would be back
to update their certs. She also mentioned that the Red Cross was
always looking for new members and hoped they would consider
that option.
Elaine also thanked Thomas Bermingham ( Instructor) for the
time and effort he had put into running both courses. The fact that
the First Aid course was held at Bru na Si meant that those attend-
ing had a comfortable venue at which to learn and Elaine thanked
Micheal de Buitleir for facilitating the Red Cross at their home .
Thomas Bermingham then presented the Certificates for both
courses and invited everyone to share in some light refreshments.
The Red Cross is grateful to Shalom House for the use of their
premises and a special word of thanks to Nora who always looks
after them. Members of the local branch of the Red Cross help out
regularly at the Blood Bank.

 Down-Scaling of Youghal
Landfill Site Gets Underway
There have being a number of problems over the last 18 months
in relation to odours emanating from the Youghal landfill site at
Foxhole. The past week however has seen an exceptional
amount of complaints made to Cllr Barbara Murray in relation to
these foul odours.
Following a series of investigations undertaken by the Director of
Services for Waste Management, Mr.Ted Lucey it has been
revealed that on this occassion the source of the problem was a
consignment of waste sugar product that was taken in and caused
huge problems when fermentation occurred. The adverse weath-
er conditions also had a detrimental effect on the operating of
machinery on site.
Cllr. Murray, having taken on board the concerns of the local
community has priotised this issue and is strongly advocating the
down-scaling of operations at the landfill site.
Cllr Murray is pleased to advise that as part of the implementa-
tion of the Cork Regional Waste Strategy, Cork County Council
and Cork City Council are working together to ensure that all
existing empty cells are firstly used before the new facility at
Bottle Hill should come into effect.
It is envisaged that bigger customers using the site in Youghal
will transfer to the Kinsale Road landfill and use the remainder
of the space there. This should leave Youghal with a very much
down scaled operation, to take effect by the end of September ’08
and operate until June 09. Youghal site should therefore be com-
pletely
out of operation by December ’09.
It is imperative that all complaints relating to foul odours from
the Youghal landfill site continue to be reported to the site office,
on 024-91084 where they will be logged and fully investigated.

35,000 Funding For Youghal
Historic Town Trail
Michael Ahern T.D has welcomed the allocation of 35,320 fund-
ing for the Youghal historic town trail. This funding was been
awarded under Failte Ireland’s historic towns initiative. The fund-
ing is designed to provide a range of tourist signage. This will
include orientation and interpretive-information boards. Which
will be placed throughout designated tourist trails in Youghal.
Deputy Ahern said ’’ this is a very usefull addition to the tourist
infrastructure of Youghal. It will serve as an aid to tourists and
assist them in enjoying their tourist experience even more.
Tourism is of vital importance to Youghal and this extra funding is
most welcome.’’

CruX Dance Theatre in its 2008 tour brings together the expertise
of three professional Irish choreographers. Jane Kellaghan,
Fearghus o Conchuir and Mairead Vaughan. This years triple per-
formance is called "Stage of My Mind" and examines the idea of
self estrangement and the inability to self soothe in our hectic pace
of modern life. Each choreographer was given free reign to create
a piece on the concept of "Stage of My Mind". Cork based Jane
Kellaghan Director of CruX Dance has included in her interpreta-
tion video and text based on a piece written by Breda Dooley ,
also from Cork. The other two choreographers created their own
dialogue with the dancers based on the concept and created a triple
bill which provides a full evenings performance of dance.
Six international dancers, male and female, worked and continue
to work with the choreographers in two locations in Cork to refine
the pieces. This intense period of preparation finishes late August.
These periods of creation and rehearsal of "Stage of My Mind"
provide a unique opportunity to develop ideas in dance in a multi-
cultural pool of dancers guided by Irish choreographers.
"Stage of My Mind" will be performed by dancers from Italy,
Japan, the UK and Ireland. The triple bill will look at our ability to
"self soothe" or put in modern day language "pull ourselves
together". In movement the dancers and choreographers will pose
the question "How are we to pull ourselves together if we don’t
know what to pull?" How do we "soothe" ourselves from the ten-
sions of modern life? Crux Dance will attempt to answer these
questions in dance in its 2008 Triple Bill Tour.
The tour kicks off in Firkin Crane Cork on September 12th with
performances in Tipperary September 13th, Youghal September
17th, Bandon September 18th and finishing in beautiful Bantry
House on September 20th as the first event in their fundraising
drive for "Art for Artifacts" to preserve and restore the Artworks
in Bantry House.

Bass Club Competition

At just past the half way stage of the bass club’s competitive sea-
son things are taking shape at the top of the leadership board. With
interest growing and membership ever increasing the club is expe-
riencing somewhat of a renaissance.
A good turn out of over twenty anglers were in attendance to con-
test the ’Duggan Family Cup’ competition at the mudflats of
Ferrypoint, Youghal on Sunday 31st of August last. An exciting
battle is always on the cards for the honour of lifting this much
sought after piece of annual silverware. But would the recent
week’s rainfall and a harbour teeming with mackerel affect the
expected catchers of flounder and possible bass?
From the offset angling was slow with only a few flounder caught
in the first hour. New member Clinton Rachman forged an early
lead with three flounder but was closely followed by Jamie Santry
with two. As high water approached the action slowed a little but
some lads managed a few single fish. Brendan Regan undoubted-
ly landed the biggest surprise of the day in the form of a two and
a half pound gilthead bream, a species rarely found in Youghal
harbour. It was the first for the bass club and indeed for Brendan.
Well done to him.
As the tide dropped away for the last hour, local angler Mark
Fleming put in a late surge landing two flounder in quick succes-
sion to add to his earlier one. However it was not enough as
Clinton had been catching regularly and ran out an easy winner
with six flounder. Jamie was second with four and Mark third with
three.
Prizes on the day were once again superb and the club would like
to thank the sponsors Broderick and Gallogley Tiling Contractors
for their continued support.
The next bass club competition will be held on the 21st September
on the slob bank, our annual open competition with all proceeds to
be donated to the R.N.L.I.. For enquiries please contact secretary

NITY COUNCIL
A meeting of the above was held in Inch Hall on the 4th of
September 2008. This was the first meeting after the summer
break.
One of the main items on the agenda was communication received
from the NRA that the traffic calming works etc proposed for
Killeagh village had been postponed for the foreseeable future.
Lack of funds being the reason cited. The NRA stated the situa-
tion would be reviewed at the earliest in 2009.
It was felt that Cork County Council would have to be contacted,
as a matter of urgency, regarding the water improvement works
which have been sanctioned for Killeagh village, but no start date
being given. This necessary upgrade cannot be postponed indef-
initely and answers have to be sought from the Council as to when
these works can commence.
The provision of defibrillators in the Parish was again discussed.
The meeting was told that a rep. from the Irish Red Cross would
attend the next meeting to discuss the costs associated with same
and the training of volunteers etc. The matter would then be taken
from there.
The state of the local roads throughout our parish was then dis-
cussed. The state of the High Road and the flooding occurring at
Cork Road Corner along with other problems were brought to the
attention of the meeting. The County Council will be lobbied on
all matters brought to the attention of the Community Council. If

Youghal Comhaltas are back to classes for another year. Numbers
are up and classes are now being held five days a week. There
might still be some space if you missed enrolment. Other local

who recently awarded certificates to a number of our teachers and
members who completed first aid courses.
The Youghal branch are preparing for the visit of two groups to
Brœ na S this Autumn. Members of our sister branch, Amergin the
Gael in Wales are visiting from the 24th to 27th October while a
touring group from England will visit a week later making it a
busy Halloween for all involved. If you meet our visitors around
town, give them a big East Cork welcome and watch out for more

The senior group, Ceolta S , will use the Autumn to prepare for

Friends of the Elderly begins search
for Ireland’s greatest grandparent
The search is on to find Ireland’s best grandparent. The Friends of
the Elderly Group has already located our fittest grandparent (73-
year old marathon runner Paddy Craddock) and our oldest
women’s mini-marathon participant (83-year-old Maureen
Armstrong).
Now it is asking people to nominate Ireland’s greatest grandparent.
Nominations close on September 21st and the result will be
announced on September 28th when Ireland’s second
Grandparent’s Day will be held.
Friends of the Elderly spokesman Dermot Kirwan said he did not
know what to expect from the nominations. "I suppose we are
looking for the most moving tribute. We want to know why they
love their grandparents so much," he said.
He said events like this were important because Friends of the
Elderly was often contacted by older people who received no vis-
its from their relatives even though they lived nearby.
This was one of the reasons for adopting Grandparent’s Day from
the UK last year, he said. Friends of the Elderly has called on all
community leaders to encourage their local councils to sponsor a
Grandparent’s Day event. "There should be a Grandparent’s Day
event in every town and village in Ireland," Mr. Kirwan said.
Grandparent’s Day activities in Dublin include a 5km family fun
run in Phoenix Park, a St. Stephen’s Green Sunday Stroll and a
family quiz.
Friends of the Elderly is also looking for 2008’s fittest grandparent
and is asking sports organisations to contact it with details of their
oldest active members.

KILLEAGH CAMOGIE
On August 9th Killeagh U11 team travelled to Blackrock to partic-
ipate in a blitz.This was run on a round robin basis with 3 other
teams in the killeagh group. Killeagh played well and accounted
for blackrock,Kilbree and Carrigtwohil. This qualified killeagh for
the cup semi-final. Here Killeagh had a mammoth struggle as they
played Eire og winners of the other group. With 2 minutes to go
Killeagh were a goal down when they struck the back of the net to
equalise and then with time ticking away they got a point to qual-
ify for the final.
In the final Killeagh faced Blackrock as they had been runners up
in our group and were put straight into the final. This was a differ-
ent game to the first time we played them and our girls were tired
having had a particularly tough semi-final with an extra game
played. But killeagh rallied the troops and eventually won on a
score line of 3goals 2 points to 1 goal.The Killeagh captain
Katherine Mulcahy was then presented with the cup and the girls

On Wednesday 13th August Vera’s U13’s took on Sars. Killeagh
had to win this to be in with a chance of qualifying for the semi-
final and Sars went in hot favourites.Being underdogs seemed to
suit Killeagh and they came out fighting. They took their scores
well
and had a good victory over Sars. The Killeagh panel were Elaine
Terry,Niamh Farrell, Ann-Marie Geary,Ellen Benaim, Ciara Daly,
Zoe McEvoy, Leah McEvoy, Ciara Motherway, Hannah Looney,
Louise O’Neill, Ciara O’Connor , Orla Daly, Ashling Daly, Taylor
Kruschel, Katie Manning, Hope Lane and Ann Marie Geary.
On the following night our U11 team played St.Catherines. This is
a very young St. Catherines team but they were no match for the
older more experienced Killeagh team. The Killeagh panel
were;Gaberielle Stephenov, Donna Hennessy, Ciara Motherway,
Katherine Mulcahy, Leah McEvoy,Niamh Farrell, Amy Benaim,
Kate Kelly/O’Mahony, Sinead Landers, Hannah Looney, Gemma
Hickey and Rachel Geary.
On Monday the 25th our under 11 team played Dungourney. We
got off to a slow start but eventually killeagh got into gear and
notched up a good win over Dungourney.
Two nights later the same team played Ballincurra, killeagh were
now at full strength and ran out easy winners.
We now have U10 parish leagues every Tuesday night at 4.15 and
U12 Training continues every Friday evening at 5.
Well Done to Mary O’ Connor and the Cork Senior Team who won
the All Ireland Camogie Final.

Challenge game
Youghal United 1 - 0 MSL Interprovincial Team.
This was the senior team’s final preparation game prior to the
league campaign starting this Friday 12th Sept where they play
Glaseen at home kick off 19:45. As friendlys go this was going to
be a mammoth task for the lads with the MSL side boasting the
experience of no less than 4 x Rockmount , 4 x Douglas Hall ,
Mayfield and Avondale players from the senior premier division
managed by Rockmount’s Billy Cronin. The boys lined out in a 4,
5, 1 formation and with the team regigged I think this was the best
first team performance in recent years. Youghal did not look like a
second division team on the night but looked like a well organised
senior premier division team. The passing and movement some-
times one touch football was a joy to watch. It was end to end stuff
and highly entertaining for those who braved the elements.
A couple of phases of play that stand out was on 35mins Shane
Ryan winning a free inside the D and Paul Moylan stepping up to
hit a superb free only for the keeper to tap it over the bar. Just
before the break some good passing play between Sean Kenneally
and Darren Hennessy across midfield found Brendan o’ Sullivan
out on the left wing, Brendan put the head down and took on the
full back cutting inside and unleashed a fierce shot on target unfor-
tunately it took a deflection on route and hammered back off the
upright.
The second half was as entertaining as the first with end to end
attacking play from both sides. Youghal’s defence worked well
under pressure and communication was good between the back
four and new keeper David Kearns who’s experience as an outfield
player helped a lot and gave everyone more confidence. The mid-
field unit worked tiredlessly with Brendan and Shane running the
wings and Sean, Darren and Paul breaking up and setting up play
both in attack and defence. Up front Mossie did the job of two men
where he sometimes had to make what looked like meaningless
runs to close down the defence. On 73 mins a delicate free kick
by Paul Moylan from midfield found Mossie Clohesy at the edge
of the box and out of nowhere fired a bicycle kicked into the top
right hand corner of the goal, this took everyone by surprise with
the technique and action first class. Towards the end Paul Moylan
again put Mossie through who broke the offside trap only for his
touch to let him down.
So the lads go into their first league match on the back of a good
performance and result against a very good team. The effort and
energy shown by everyone involved was a credit to them - all the
best from the club for the coming season!!

there were less than 3 minutes gone in this game and united found
themselves two goals down in what turned out to be a first half
they never got going in, after that shock start united composed
themselves and began to get into the game but brooklodge just
seemed more awake and scored two more goals before the break,
the second half saw a better team performance and united did have
a good few chanches in front of goal but failed to take them, been
four goals up brooklodge went of the boil in the second half and it
was andrew hennessy who di eventuallly get one back for united
but much too late in the game, united are missing key players at
the moment and hopefully they can get them back soon, united are
in action in the q/f of the league cup on next friday night at ard rath
park when they play carrigaline

when st marys wer to strong for them in the end scoring four
golas in the second half, it was a tigh game in the first and both
defences were playing well and it was scoreless at the break,
the game opened up more in the second and eran clohessy was
unluckey not to score when his shot hit the crossbar and two good
efforts from adam fitzgearld could have seen youghal taken the
lead, st marys who were pressing forward as well were rewarded
for it and they scored four goals which was a bit harsh on the
youghal lads to win the game.

united had to come back three times in this game to share the
points in what turned out to be a thriler of a game and only for the
grat performance of dillen mason in the youghal goal new farm
cold have got all points,
it was the home side wh took a early lead in this game but united
did not take long to get back on level terms when parric daly was
on had to score for youghal, new farm thought they had gone back
in front but daly was on hand when he kicked off the line, but a
few minutes later they did go ahead agin but just before half time
united were back on level terms again when jake power scored the
first of his two goals,
it was new farm who started the better in the second half and had
some good chanches but youghal keeper on on top form but
chould do nothing when the home side took the lead for the third
time and looked like they had the game won but once again
youghal dug deep and jake power was their hero when he got
youghal third goal which game them a share of the points in a
game that all the youghal players can be proud of their perform-
ances,
COACHING a number of the managers and team helpers will be
attending a coaching course in cork over next weekend this is run
by the FAI and it is the kick start level and hopefull some of them
will go on to the other levels

YOUGHAL UNITED 1 GLASHEEN 1
United started off their league campane with a disappointing
result as they had to settle for a share of the points in a game
where they had plenty of chanches to win, in a first half it was
united who were the better team and chanches from mossie
clohsey and shane ryan could have seen united taken the lead, just
before the break paul moylan looked to be through on goal but he
was taken out of the game by a glasheen player who only got a
yellow card for the tackle, the opening goal of the game came two
minutes into the second half and surprisenly it went to glasheen
who caught united cold, united did bounce back and sean keanel-
ly had them level 7 minutes later, united had a very good spell for
ten minutes after the goal with further chanches fallen their way
but failing to take them, the game finished level and it will be
glasheen who will be the happier of the two teams.

A very good and honest display from the intermediate footballers
after what was a disappointing year. Youghal got stuck in straight
from the off in testing underfoot conditions at Pairc Nua and led by
0-5 to 0-3 at the break. Youghal upped the anti on the restart and with
well worked scores early in the second half and a goal from Vincie
Murray the game was beyond the visitors going into the last quarter
but to their credit Aghabullogue threatened on several occasions but
couldn’t break through a very solid and experienced back line. The
decisive score came from the impressive Daniel Savage who playing
from the halfback line scored I-Ion the night. It was a lively perform-
ance from the lads and gives optimism that next year might see the
revival of football in the club after a couple of years of decline.

A good start to the championship campaign by Youghal who started
brightly and went into a six point lead but to let Carrig back into it
and leave the outcome in doubt until late on. An exciting game with
lots of goals kept the supporters interested and the Youghal following
went home happy enough with the display but knowing we need to
up the anti for the next outing. A superb display of score taking from
Shane Flynn saw him get 3-2 of Youghals tally and more work like
this with James O’Mahony and the returning Ger Cotter along side
there might be some exciting times ahead for a promising minor
team.

The Senior Club still have a few fixtures upcoming and it is vital that
players make themselves available for their respective teams. It is
over the next few weeks that the groundwork can be done for next
Year. It was a disappointing Year on the field but hopefully the Minor
Footballers can produce a good run in the Championship and with the
extension to the floodlighting at Club Aras imminent and a lot of
work being done to improve facilities, and the Juvenile Club compet-
ing successfully at all grades the future looks good for the next few
Years.
As and from this week the Club have a newly formed fundraising and
social committee. Set up by the Juvenile Club in conjunction with
officers from the Senior Club it is hoped that this group will bring the
social scene to the fore which is lacking within the Club. The first
undertaking for this committee is the organising of Car Boot Sales on
a regular basis for our grounds at Club Aras. It is hoped to have this
up and running before Christmas with some work already underway.
The Club have enrolled a company from Cork called DiscoTech to
look at the possibility of running Disco’s in the Club for our younger
members in the 13 to 16 age bracket. DiscoTech have a very good
reputation with links to 96FM and a date of 24th October has been
pencilled in for the first one. This will run from 8 to 11 so as not to
have too much of an impact on our neighbours and tickets will be on
sale in the next few days from an outlet in Town as well as from the
Club itself. The show will be High Tec with a strobe lighting and
laser light display, dry ice machine etc. The Club have undertaken to
do this so as to satisfy a demand from the younger members of our
Club and beyond who have inundated us with requests to use the hall
for Discos etc. as well as raising vital funds for the running of the
Juvenile Club. The event will be open to all 13 to 16 year olds not
just club members and if the night is successful we hope to run anoth-
er before the end of the Year and again next Year.
A Table Quiz is provisionaly booked in for October l0th in Club Aras
at 9pm. Advertisements for this will be appearing over the next few
days with all relevant information.

YOUGHAL 8-2 v ST OLIVERS 4-2
Youghal played host to St. Olivers on Thursday night for an U8
Hurling match. Considering all the heavy rain the ground conditions
at Club Aras were very good. Youghal played with a strong wind in

the first half and took full advantage scoring 6-1 without reply. With
the wind at their backs in the second half Olivers made a strong
recovery scoring 4-2. The Youghal Boys to their credit kept plugging
away and scored 2-1 against the wind. Great heart and determination

JUMPING JACKS U8 HURLING BLITZ
Youghal Travelled to Tallow for the annual Jumping Jacks hurling
blitz. Four teams competed, Cois Brid, Lismore, Ballyduff and our-
selves. A great mornings hurling was had by all and great credit must
go to the organisers for the way it was run.
YOUGHAL 2.1 V LlSMORE 1-0
The Y oughal boys were detennined to make their mark on this tour-
nament early on and got off to a flier beating Lismore in the opener.
YOUGHAL 4-1 V COIS BRID 2-0
With a win from the first game behind them the momentum was
building along with the confidence and they kept the pressure on to
secure a second victory and a place in the final against Ballyduff who
had also progressed unbeaten.
YOUGHAL 2-0 V BALLYDUFF 1-3
With both teams within touching distance of the trophy this game
was never going to be for the faint hearted. Scores were hard to come
by with neither side giving up territory or possession too easily. The
game was always in the balance with neither side able to get on top
and in the end a draw was a fair result.
With both Youghal and Ballyduff fInishing with two wins and a draw
their was an anxious waight while officials calculated the goal differ-
ence. Ballyduff were declared champions after a recount by just 2
points. Full credit to the Youghal boys on what was their best perfon-
nance to date. This side is clearly improving with every outing and
hopefully will get that midden tournament victory in the near future.

Coaching for the younger members of the Club takes place on
Saturday mornings in Club Aras.
U7 an U8 training is from lOam to llam and U9 from llam to 12pm.
All kidz in these age brackets are welcome the only stipulation we
would have is that kidz must be 5 years of age or attending school.
Hurleys and Helmets are supplied so there is no excuse not to come
along and have a go. Both Girls and Boys are invited and great fun is
had each and every Saturday morning with lots of parents staying to
cheer on their charges.
U12’S ARE GOING TO CROKE PARK.
The U12 hurlers have been invited to take part in an inter county
tournament in Croke Park on October 4th. They will be among 16
teams competing in 12 minute games. The lads will have 4 games as
well as an hour long stadium tour. The Club did not have to be asked
twice and preperations are already well underway for the event. It is
hoped that the parents of those involved will travel with us on the day
as to cheer on your Sons in Croke Park is a dream come true for many
parents aswell as for a Young fella picking up a hurley. For many
young guys this is a chance of a life time to play in front of a large
crowd in Croke Park. The Electronic scoreboard will be in operation
on the Day with the lads names etc. being displayed as well as live
screening of the games.
The Club will be running at least one bus to the event. Our arrival
time is 12:30pm and a light lunch will be made available to the play-
ers. Final details will be made available over the coming few days as
we get more details. The Table Quiz being held on the 10th of
October is hoped to pay most of the expenses for the Day be it after
the actual event. The Players in Question will be travelling free of
charge and it is hoped that any charge outside of this will be mini-
