Happy New Year to everyone. It’s
said that a New Year brings new
beginnings, and that is very true in
Neston with the opening of the new
flagship Sainsbury’s store. How will it
affect the town centre? Who can tell.
Let’s hope that it encourages people
to do their weekly shopping locally
16 rather than travel up to the Wirral but
the question remains whether the
superstore will suck trade away from
the smaller shops.
In this month’s edition we’ve got lots of
adverts from the small businesses in the
town, so please give them your support

The candyman can!

Year 3 children at Woodfall

very tasty topic, as part of
the International Primary
Curriculum.
They were learning all
about chocolate, from the
growing of the cacao pod to
the journey that the cacao
beans make to the chocolate
factories, before being used
to make chocolate bars.
The children were very
excited during a visit from
Charles, from The Old

and they each made
six delicious chocolate

What we do at Neston Youth and Community Centre
Volunteering
NC&YC is a charity with only one paid worker. The rest of the work
is done by volunteers and they are always looking for more helpers.
If you would like to give something back to your community why
not go along and see if you could help especially if you could man
reception or do a little care-taking or book keeping.
Courses
NC&YC offer courses in languages, computing, crafts and art,
Pilates, Yoga in addition to a Job Club, three different Youth Clubs,
Dad’s Den and more. See the advert in this issue of The Local for
details of what is on offer this month. Courses can be short or long
and can be joined at any time, so if you happen to miss the start
date just go along and join in.
Youth Clubs
The Youth Zone is open on Mondays and Tuesdays from 6.30 to 9
for 13 to 19 year olds and Wednesdays from 7 to 9 for those from
10 upwards. Wednesdays are especially aimed at young people
with a disability, but all are welcome.. Pool, air hockey, table tennis,
games consoles and table football are amongst the many activities.
Room Hire
The Centre, and individual rooms, are
available for hire for private functions or
for use by businesses for off-site training,
induction or interviews from as little as
£6 per hour. One of the more unusual
hirers were a group of Triumph Rocket 111 How to find us
motorcycle owners. During their weekend
gathering they held a Custom Bike Show and invited the public to
vote for their favourite.
New Name
Although the centre proved has very popular, its name wasn’t. Last
year they held a completion to find a new, rather snappier, name
for it. The winner was Bryce Mailer, a local resident. Bryce will be
pictured next month receiving his prize when the new name will be
revealed by a mystery celebrity, so watch this space!

School’s eco warriors

Pupils from Neston Primary School celebrated
being awarded the ‘Eco-Schools Silver Award’
recently. Members of the school’s ‘Eco Warrior
Club’ encouraged classmates, staff and parents
to reduce, recycle and reuse. The children have
been responsible for introducing composting,
water saving, energy saving light bulbs and the
recycling of printer cartridges, paper, batteries,
clothes and mobile phones.
Members of the club carried out an audit of the
school and suggested ways to save energy and
avoid unnecessary waste.
“The children are very keen to do their bit and
encourage others to help too. The Eco Warriors
have done a fantastic job and we were delighted
to receive our Silver Award. The children want to
do even more and gain the next award. Of the 19
extra-curricular activities we offer at school - our
Eco-Warriors is one of the most popular.” said
Annabel Elliott - Deputy Headteacher.

Rhinos spotted in the Lake District!

The Rhinos class (Year 6) of Parkgate Primary School recently enjoyed a week of
fun and adventure at The Kepplewray Project in the Lake District. The group faced
many challenges and tasks throughout the week learning new skills and working
closely as a team along the way to solve problems and achieve their goals. The
action packed week included scrambling up one of the highest mountains in the area,
abseiling, stepping in the footsteps of Robin Hood with
archery, raft building and canoeing on Coniston Water
and getting soaked ghyll scrambling, a particular
favourite with many in the class.

Parkgate pupils have got the gift!

Three members of Rhino
Class Parkgate Primary
Schoo, Daniel, Lara and
Jess, got the chance to
have a grand tour around
the Shoe Box Appeal HQ in
Birkenhead shortly before
Christmas. They helped
to unload and sort the gift
boxes which were going to
underprivileged children in
Romania. The pupils then
watched a little video about
the little children and how
they drink out of muddy
water.
Parkgate Primary had
collected 40 neatly wrapped
shoe boxes all with lots of
little gifts.

BOOK REVIEWS:
NEW YEAR TREATS
BY ELEANOR DAVIES, FROM LINGHAM’S BOOKSTORE, HESWALL

Fiction: House Rules- Jodie Picoult

When Emma Hunt’s teenage son is diagnosed with Asperger’s she knows she will
do anything to help him. Jacob Hunt is brilliant at maths, has a wicked sense of
humour, is extraordinarily organized but hopeless at reading social cues. He is locked
in his own world – aware of the world outside, and wanting to make a connection,
trying to be like everyone else without knowing how. His mother expects other people
not to understand, she expects stares and whispers, she even expects trouble with
the police. But when his tutor is found dead, all the hallmark behaviours of Jacob’s
syndrome – not looking someone in the eye, odd movements, inappropriate actions
– start looking a lot like guilt to the police. And Jacob’s mother must ask herself the
hardest question in the world: is her child capable of murder?
Jodie Picoult fans will love this book with its usual mix of topical controversy and rare
insight into the workings of a family. Newly out in paperback, this is a great novel in
which to lose yourself over the long dark January evenings.

Travel Biography: Return to the Olive Farm- Carol Drinkwater

And if those dark winter evenings are getting you down, where better to spend them
than in the sunny South of France? After sixteen months of travelling round the
Mediterranean in search of the ancient secrets of the olive tree, Carol returns to her
husband Michel and his growing family. However, the homecoming celebrations are
overshadowed by disturbing discoveries. The plight of the honey bee has become
an international crisis and Carol is faced with unsettling news about the hives on her
own olive farm. While the multinational companies are pushing for ‘bigger, better,
bumper’ crops, a small band of farmers and ecologists are calling for a halt to many
of the modern farming malpractices that are endangering the planet. Carol is amongst
them. But it puts her own farm, her idyll, under threat. This is the story of how Carol
and Michel struggle with some difficult choices, and how they decide to deal with the
unavoidable disappointments and inevitable responsibilities that come with running an
organic farm.
Sixth in the ‘Olive Farm’ series, a beautifully written, well researched, warm and
humane book that passionately confronts issues to do with farming in Provence
today.

Health and Beauty: Lorraine on Looking great- Lorraine Kelly

Start 2011 as you mean to go on with wonderful guide to a new you. The 4 sections of
this attractively produced book are entitled ‘Healthy Eating’, ‘Exercise’,
‘Looking Great’ and ‘Staying Healthy’. There are loads of illustrations
and diagrams and the whole thing is highly accessible, with lots of
great tips for improving health and wellbeing without unrealistic
pressure to look like a supermodel. And judging by the photographs,
Lorraine herself is a marvellous advert for the efficacy of her
methods. A great one for all you Neston Yummy Mummies!
