What
makes them so popular? Is it their looks? Is it the fact that they have a
nice car/truck? Is it the fact that they are the ones that throw all of the
parties or goes to all of the parties? Is the fact they are the star player of a
sports team or they are a cheerleader? Or, is it possibly because they
wash the feet of the ones that follow them?
You were probably right with me until that last one. Most of the people that
we think of as popular wouldn’t be caught washing someone’s feet. It
would be beneath them. However, Jesus, the one who drew a crowd
everywhere He went, was found here washing the feet of the ones that
were supposed to be His followers. Serving people is more about your
heart and how you perceive other people rather than the actual doing of
something for someone.
1. “14a Now that I, your Lord and Teacher have washed your feet…” – I
think Jesus was trying to prove a point here by mentioning His title. He
wasn’t on some power trip. It was just the opposite. He was teaching the
disciples to be servants and not to allow their title to go to their head.
2. “14b … you also should wash one another’s feet.” – Isn’t it weird that you
never hear of the disciples washing each other’s feet from this day forward?
It wasn’t the actual task that Jesus was so concerned about here. He was
concerned about the heart condition that was involved. He wanted his
disciples to have a servant’s heart toward one another.
Serve – Day 2 3. “I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.” –
We should therefore follow the example of Christ.
