RATE OF REACTION

1 Three sets of experiments are carried out to study the rate of reaction between marble
(CaCO3) and dilute sulphuric acid. The table below shows the reacting conditions.

Set Reacting conditions

I 30 cm3 of 0.5 mol dm-3 sulphuric acid + 1 gram of marble chips at room
temperature
II 30 cm3 of 0.5 mol dm-3 sulphuric acid + 1 gram of marble powder at room
temperature
III 50 cm3 of 0.5 mol dm-3 sulphuric acid + 1 gram of marble chips at room
temperature

a Draw a diagram to show the set- up of apparatus used to collect the gas evolved in
the experiment.

b i Figure 1 shows the curve obtained when the volume of carbon dioxide gas liberated
against time is plotted for set I.

On the same axes, sketch the curve that you would expect for set II.

ii What is the factor that affects the differences in the curves between set I and II

c i Compare set I and set III: On the same axes, sketch the graphs of volume of carbon
dioxide gas against time. Label the curve.
