Creating excitement with technology!

Picassian Polymers is a business unit of Stahl Holdings bv with

more than 1,000 employees and 7 production facilities worldwide.
Having more than 50 years of experience in resin manufacturing, our
full range of acrylics, polyurethanes and hybrids enables you to
easily formulate high quality coatings to meet the most stringent
performance requirements.

In addition to waterborne and solventborne resins we also

manufacture poly-carbodiimide crosslinkers which provide
remarkable advantages over commonly used poly-isocyanate
technology (see next page for details).

Products based on our resins are used on a wide range of substrates

including - but not only - wood, plastic, metal, leather and textile or
in the ink and adhesives market.

Our R&D-team designs each product with a certain application

in mind. This helps to ensure it meets or exceeds your application
requirements.
We value our customers’ needs to be competitive, and make every
effort to accommodate this from the early planning stage on.
As a forward-thinking company, new developments include solvent
free PUDs and VOC free hybrids and crosslinkers. These have been
developed based on market demands for compliance with existing
and future VOC regulations.

We strive to provide first class service with quick and reliable

solutions from our experienced customer service, sales & technical
service staff.

VOC free and label free crosslinkers:
poly-carbodiimides!

Introduction
Are you looking for a crosslinker, but don’t want to
increase your VOC? Are you finding that short pot life
is limiting your possibilities? Would you like to avoid
irritant (Xi) or harmful (Xn) labeling?
The solution is easy: poly-carbodiimide crosslinkers*!

How do poly-carbodiimides work?

Unlike poly-isocyanates, poly-carbodiimides react
mainly with acid groups and not with hydroxyl groups.
Acid groups are part of almost every waterborne
acrylic and polyurethane dispersion, but at a pH of
above 7.0 they are neutralized and not available for a
crosslinking reaction. When the coating is applied, the
neutralizing amine evaporates and the acid groups are
exposed. Now the poly-carbodiimide starts to build a
crosslinking network, which leads to higher chemical
and scratch resistance.

How long is the pot life?

The poly-carbodiimide does not react as long as the
pH is above 7.0. However, there is a slow hydrolization
process, which is also pH dependent. With a higher
final pH, a longer pot life can be achieved. We
measured pot life of 2 weeks with more than 95%
active crosslinker remaining at a pH of 8.5*.

Are poly-carbodiimides suitable for every resin?

We recommend using poly-carbodiimides with water-
borne resins. What is important to know, is that they
do not react with hydroxyl groups. Therefore, they
cannot be used to crosslink OH-functional resins.
