FDI in R&D
♦ Till recently, most if not all MNEs preferred to conduct their
R&D in their respective home countries.
♦ Since the early 1990s MNEs have started establishing their R&D
units in developing countries like China and India.
♦ Two motives are usually identified for starting R&D units in
developing host countries: access to market and access to science.
♦ There is evidence to believe that the rationale of access to
science need not be confined to setting-up of units in developed countries.
♦ Countries like China and India also have some advantages and
contribute to knowledge development.
♦ Studies have found science motive equally important.
