PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
On November 11, 2010, the Board of
Governors of the Hawai‘i Academy of
Recording Arts was formally installed at our
annual General Membership Luncheon and
meeting at the Willows Restaurant. Nā kahu
Bettina and Joe Pekelo Recca from
Ho‘omana Na‘auao Ke Alaula Church
presided over the installation.
Your officers for the next term are
Ku‘uipo Kumukahi (president), Pali
Ka‘aihue (vice–president), Lea Uehara
(secretary), Alan Okami (treasurer), and
Hailama Farden (immediate past president,
and sergeant–at–arms). And the governors
include Keola Donaghy, Kale Hannahs,
Maria Hickling, Gaylord Holomalia, Kimo
Kahoano, Fred Krauss, Mailani Makainai,
Kenneth Makuakāne, Bill Meyer, and
Marlene Sai. We welcome the newly elected
members Kale Hannahs, Kimo Kahoano and
Alan Okami.
Immediately following the installation,
board members visited Krash Kealoha at
Straub Hospital bearing gifts of song and
dance, wishing him love, and deeply
thanking him for pioneering such a great
organization. He will always be loved and
greatly missed.
The Board is happy to announce that the
Nā Hōkū Hanohano Music Festival will be
held May 26 to May 29, 2011. A media
event will kick off the week followed by two
days of workshops, the Lifetime
Achievement Awards, and culminating in
the 34th Annual Nā Hōkū Hanohano
Awards.
The Festival will close out a month–long
series of events dubbed Mele Mei. HARA

during the month. To advance Mele Mei and
the Nā Hōkū Hanohano Music Festival,
HARA has partnered with the Hawai‘i
Tourism Authority (HTA) and others
including Kintetsu International Hawai‘i
Co., who will actively promote these events
in Japan.

REESTABLISHED
The Board of Governors voted in 2009 to
reestablish the Single of the Year Category
for releases made during the 2010 calendar
year. This change means that the first award
will be made at next year’s 2011 Nā Hōkū
Issue 1210 – Dec. 2010

Hanohano Awards. The Board recognized
the renewed popularity and value of singles
in online sales in addition to the continued
release of physical CD singles. Here are the
criteria for the award:
Single of the Year: Best–recorded
performance of a song released as a single
in either physical (CD) or digital format.
The recording may not be included on a
physical CD or packaged and promoted as
part of a digital “album” on any online
service unless the release of the single
precedes the CD/album release by at least
30 days. Physical CD singles may include
multiple renditions of the same song (i.e.,
remix and/or karaoke versions) but only one
version of the song may be nominated, and
the CD may not include any other songs.

AND ENTRY DEALINES FOR 2011 NĀ
HŌKŪ HANOHANO AWARDS
This is a reminder to all members that in
order to be eligible for the 2011 Nā Hōkū
Hanohano Awards, releases must be
available for purchase by December 31,
2010. Please note that it is not enough to
upload them to iTunes, TuneCore or other
service by December 31, 2010; they must be
available for sale by that date. The HARA
office must receive all entry forms for the
2011 Awards no later than January 31, 2011.
No exceptions will be made.

HŌKŪ HANOHANO AWARDS
HARA members will be able to enter
eligible releases again this year via our
online entry form, which is available at:
 http://www.nahokuhanohano.org/nomination/
The nomination form is also available
from the HARA website as a downloadable
.pdf (Adobe Acrobat) file that you can print
out and submit. If you have difficulty with
the online form or downloading the .pdf,
please contact the HARA office as soon as
possible!
GENRE AND ADJUDICATED
CATEGORY CHANGES
The Board also addressed the concerns
brought to it by members regarding the entry
of releases by non-resident artists. While
noting that HARA’s primary mission is “to
preserve, protect and promote Hawai‘i’s
recording industry,” we also recognize
HARA’s unique role in supporting and
recognizing those music genres that have
originated or developed in Hawaiʻi, and are
now being recorded elsewhere. For this
reason, albums by non–resident artist(s) may
be eligible only in the Hawaiian, Island
Music and Slack Key Guitar categories.
Noting that there is no other venue to
honor excellence in haku mele or Hawaiian
language performance for non-residents, the
Board has voted to allow non-resident
entries into the adjudicated Haku Mele and
Hawaiian Language Performance categories.
Please note that non-resident artists may not
submit releases in any other genre
categories.
These changes took effect for 2010
releases, and will be applied to those
releases entered for next year’s 2011 Nā
Hōkū Hanohano Awards.
