New courses in Professional Practices for Artists at Yavapai

College begin
Monday, December 20, 2010

Taught by Verde Gallery Director Virginia Pates, new spring semester

courses are designed to provide aspiring or professional artists with
some very important tools for a successful career in the Arts.

The classes dovetail together in timing and subject matter so that

students may take them simultaneously. Tuition for each course is
$124 for 15 weeks of tuition. Spring semester courses run from Jan.
19-May 30, 2011. Early registration is recommended due to limited
class size. All registration is online at www.yc.edu.

Portfolio Development (ART 232, crn 13364) will help students

develop a fine arts portfolio, suitable for print or online presentation.
Designed for both the academic art student and the professional,
working artist, topics covered include practical instruction on
resumes, artist statements, cover letters, grant writing and
copyright laws. Students will learn to document their art, research appropriate galleries and
opportunities, and interview or make applications using their portfolios. This course will meet on
Thursdays from 1 to 2:45.

Now, on the other side of the desk, the Gallery Management (ART 105, crn 13363) course will cover
topics on the general operations of a variety of types of art exhibition spaces, including curation,
databases, business forms and marketing. Students will also have access to the Verde Gallery on
the Verde Valley Campus, as well as community galleries and exhibition spaces, to learn the
practical skills of installing and lighting exhibitions and hosting artists' receptions and other
community arts events. This course will meet on Tuesdays from 1 to 2:45.

Virginia Pates is an internationally known ceramic artist with an MFA from the University of Wales in
