A large range of symmetrical and asymmetrical jet fans is offered by WITT&SOHN AG .

The symmetrical fans can be manufactured to generate a partial or complete
reversibility (i.e. 40%, 60%, 90%, 98%). Additionally, our standard range of jet fans offer a
thrust from 35N up to 2,800N. Higher values are possible on request.

With a number of different lengths for the silencers,

nearly every required sound pressure level can be
achieved. Additionally, the specially-developed
impellers can operate at very high tip speeds and
run at very high temperatures. X-raying of the
impeller blades and the impeller hub is not
necessary, but can be done upon request.

•WITT&SOHN AG has developed the new „Banana Jet ®“

The Banana Jet ® generates 30% more effective thrust in any given tunnel. This jet
fan reduces the costs of new tunnel ventilation systems and enables tunnel system
upgrades (due to increased traffic load or new fire rules) without high costs.

• Banana Jet ® Fan Design vs Standard Tunnel Ventilation System

The patented Banana Jet ® fan design provides a number of advantages over
standard jet fans. From capital cost, to power consumption and size, the Banana
Jet Fan ® has numerous short- and long-term benefits. The tables below compare
power consumption, thrust, engineering and costs between a total of 100 standard
jet fans and 100 Banana Jet Fans.

standard jet fans

The graphs shown left demonstrate the

difference in airflow between standard jet
fans and the Banana Jet ® fans.

The standard jet

fan airflow is
shown by Figure 1.
At the sides, the
airflow is high, but
towards the
centre (of the
tunnel) the flow
speed drops
dramatically.

The Figure 2 demonstrates that the Banana

Jet ® fans have a more constant speed
throughout the tunnel. Whilst there is still a
drop in speed in the middle of the tunnel, it is
Figure 2: Average flow speed 40 m behind much less cut out than with the standard jet
the Banana Jet ® fans
fans.

WITT & SOHN AG

has not only a
range of fans
tested to run at
300°C and 400°C
for 2 hours, the
company has also
developed a
range that has
been full size
tested to operate
at 700° C for 90
minutes.

Service & Maintenance

Fans installed in tunnels are subjected to varying and often very harsh
conditions. Temperature changes and air pollution can affect a fans‘s
performance. Therefore WITT&SOHN AG recommends and offers a regular
service & maintenance. Regular and pre-planned maintenance can and
will provide long-term savings.
Our products come with a
12-month warranty, which
can be extended with a
separate service contract.

As well as carrying out

maintenance on products
supplied by ourselves, we
are also able to service fans
supplied by other
companies.

Case Study - Elbtunnel
The new Elbtunnel, situated in Hamburg, Germany is being hailed by many experts as
the safest tunnel in the world. Following a number of catastrophic tunnel fires in
recent years, WITT&SOHN AG has developed a system which makes use of their
unique fan technology.
In the event of a fire fumes are extracted
through a separate overhead duct and
then exhausted. Dampers are located at
various points throughout the tunnel
through which the smoke is extracted.

At the same time as the powerful extract

fans are working, jet fans on either side of
the fire can blow towards it, keeping the
escape routes free to ensure good
visibility. The concept is shown below.
Elbtunnel 4 – Nearing completion

Exhaust Fumes

Fresh Air
Direction

Fire
Elbtunnel 4 – A cross section of the tunnel

Under normal conditions, the jet fans are used to

control pollution, however in the case of a fire,
the damper closest to the fire (shown right) opens
and the jet fans switch to fire mode.
It should be noted that the large, extract fans are
amongst the most highly engineered in the
world. Independently tested by CTICM of France,
the fans have been tested for over 2 hours at
700°C.
It is hoped that the Elbtunnel will become the
standard by which other tunnels are designed.

formation on this

SOHN
IGW
Car Park Ventilation
PSB, Europe‘s leading company for
Impulse Ventilation Systems (IVS) of
underground car parks is a member
of the Witt Group.
Unique impulse fans have been
designed for the system which
monitors and controls the inner
environment of an underground car
park. The fans have been
independently tested to run at 300oC
for 2 hours to conform to the EN
12101-3 standard.
It is in the event of a fire that the
system comes into its own. Various
tests have shown the system‘s
effectiveness, however 2 real fires
have proven the system‘s worth to the
fire services, engineers, the car park
users and also the car park‘s owners. In
the most recent fire at the Ceramique
Nordknoop Parking in Maastricht, with
2 cars fully destroyed, the car park was
re-opened within 30 minutes of the fire
having started.

Larger impulse fans are used for

car parks with higher ceilings, in
addition to service roads and
delivery bays, in which the fans
shown right are installed.
