FAMILY TIES
Your feature in the November issue, The Curse of Competitive Parenting, really
made me take a long hard look at how I am raising my children. I am forever
running around, taking my kids from school to activities and am as exhausted as
they are. I showed the article to my husband and we have decided to try and take
it easy with the activities in 2011, to give our children more room to breathe and
to schedule in some more quality family time together. We’re afraid if we don’t,
well miss out their on their youth and we’ve realised that watching them grow up
and enjoy life is half the fun.

Emirates Woman of the Year 2010, the audience’s
applause was rapturous. Taking to the stage from
her seat at the table appropriately entitled Dedication, where
she sat with both her daughter and granddaughter, 90-year-old

AMANDA NAVAI
Amanda Navaian always wanted to be an
entrepreneur, but it wasn’t until attending
a business conference with guest speaker
Sahar Hashemi (the inspirational founder
of Coffee Republic) that a lightning bolt of
inspiration struck. “Sahar said something
that stuck in my mind, ‘you do not have to
re-invent the wheel, you just need to improve
it’… this really made an impact on me and
I applied it to what I know best; handbags
and shoes!”
The 32-year-old Iranian has been in
the luxury business for almost 10 years.
Following a career move from London to
Dubai in 2005, Amanda always aspired to
own a beautifully crafted python skin bag,
but it was a purchase outside her Marketing
Executive’s budget. This encouraged her
decision to introduce versatility to an
affordable python collection (her 100 per
cent handmade, trade-certified bags start
at around Dhs2,500) and Amanda set about
making her dream a reality – something that
happened at hurtling speed. In January this
year, Amanda was yet to receive the leather to
begin production; and by July her bags were
selling out at Bloomingdale’s, more recently
securing a spot on the best-selling brands list
at Saks Fifth Avenue.
The idea is simple: multi-purpose,
bright designs that are edgy and classic at
the same time. Most Amanda Navai bags
are reversible, with magnetic snap clasps
enabling the wearer to fold and flip between
colours and play around with removable,
adjustable chains. Each features a golden lion
emblem –a symbol of Amanda’s star sign Leo
– and includes either a cardholder or make-
up case; bringing fabulous functionality and
a personal touch to each luxurious piece.

creators of Love & Label – a stylishly savvy head

Guess, whilst Farah had previously worked with
British bag designer Meli Mellow. I’ve always
had an infatuation with bags and shoes and for
me it was a natural step ahead,” 27-year-old
Nahida explains.
The luxury leatherwear idea came to the
pair whilst visiting the Dead Sea in Jordan two
years ago. “It was an out of the blue idea,” says
Nahida. “We went on to establish Love & Label
from scratch; it’s been a great achievement for
us.” Nahida continues: “Having passion and
expertise in small fashion businesses has got us
both to where we are today, entering the market
strongly and competing with upcoming brands.”
The Love & Label line is one of quality,
with glossy python skin and butter-soft leather
finishes across an array of colour, from classic
shades to vibrant hues that pop. “We design
for an everyday woman, a woman who is
confident in her own skin,” Nahida enthuses.

of two years of work from the designers. Their
latest offering is a refined A/W10 collection
which follows perfectly a spring collection

circles of friends from Hollywood to Primrose Hill, and consequent
partying preceding him, we thought we were well-versed as to who
the the man behind the jewellery was. However, as the 50-year-old Brit
walks into the store, (albeit after keeping us waiting for 10 minutes,
whilst wandering animatedly around outside on his mobile, waving at
us through the window) he greets everyone in the vicinity with a big
smile, a bright “‘Ello there, I’m Stephen” introduction (but sounding

talk us through them from the off: the Seven Deadly Sins cocktail ring collection – which, frankly, speaks
for itself. “We really have had a laugh with it, I must say,” he quips
playfully about some of the more risqué sins that he’s translated
into stunningly colourful, dramatic displays. “Obviously, I’d

considering we are visiting the Middle East , but there’s been a

on to explain “I’ve thought of the past few weeks as us ‘touring’
this collection, having just finished taking it around America,
and the reaction there was good, too. Actually, they really loved
the Gluttony ring!” he laughs, raising his eyebrows. We comment
that the coral-tone Lobster ring, practically winking at us from
the glass cabinet, is a particular In Deep eye-catcher, to which
he responds: “Kate Moss stole that one from Assia at an event in

that the Dhs49,400 ring was returned safely.
