Utilize the advantages of ABB capacitors and
High reliability
Thanks to our extensive experience and investment in the
latest technologies, ABB develops, designs and manufac-
tures highly efficient and reliable capacitors. ABB capaci-
tors are successfully in use with thousands of satisfied
customers across the U.S. and worldwide.

In-house metallizing
We ensure a high quality capacitor by controlling the
metallized polypropylene film process in our own plant.
The fundamental process of polypropylene film metallizing This has resulted in the development of a unique dielec-
which is essential to the reliability of the capacitor.
tric system providing:
• High voltage withstand capability
• Excellent peak current handling capability
• High capacitance stability
• Long life even under high electrical stress
• Minimum dielectric losses (below 0.5W/kvar)

Complete environmental acceptability

ABB capacitors have a dry type dielectric with no free
liquid. There is no risk of leakage or pollution of the
environment.

Slitting of metallized film under controlled atmospheric

conditions. High precision machines allow perfect reproduction Safety
at high speeds.
ABB capacitors are filled with an inert, fire proof, nontoxic
mineral filler called vermiculite. The vermiculite safely
absorbs energy produced within the capacitor and
provides protection against catastrophic failure.

Self-healing capability
Self-healing is a characteristic unique to metallized film
capacitors. It is the capability of the capacitor insulation
system to restore its original insulation properties auto-
matically after a breakdown. The high performance
dielectric system of ABB capacitors ensure excellent self-
healing capability.
The computer controlled winding process. The windings
obtained at this stage represent the core of the capacitor and
are called capacitor elements.

Quality
ABB's registered ISO 9001 Quality System provides one
of the strongest assurances of product quality. Through
complete control of the manufacturing process and a
severe testing program, ABB can offer a total quality
product.

Reliability
ABB capacitors comply with and exceed the requirements
of the most stringent national and international standards
including UL, CSA, IEC, NEC, ANSI and IEEE, Std. 18.
Each capacitor element undergoes very stringent national and
international testing.

ABB solutions
ABB has a full range of products designed to improve
Low Voltage Network Quality. Within the LVNQ concept,
we offer:
• Low voltage power capacitors
• Automatic capacitor banks
• Anti-resonance banks
• Filters
• Dynamic response capacitor banks
• Soft switching capacitor banks

ABB capacitor construction

The capacitor elements are provided with thermal equalizers,
connecting cables and placed in metal enclosures. The
enclosures are filled with vermiculite and provided with terminal
plates. All capacitors are tested to UL and CSA standards.

When planning the installation of capacitors, it is neces-
sary to select the appropriate method of compensation
and to decide upon the optimum combination of fixed
capacitors and automatic capacitor banks. Fixed capaci-
tors are recommended for individual compensation of

COMPENSATION Solutions to harmonics
Methods of compensation Reactive power compensation also requires consider-
ation of network distortions caused by harmonics. Such
distortion may reach significant levels and be amplified
by capacitors.

Particular network conditions may require the installation

of harmonic filters or anti-resonance banks. With our
understanding of harmonic phenomena, ABB is able to
provide a complete range of products to ensure the best
