Windows Switchgear Operating System
packed with new features
Nu-Lec Industries' latest version of
Windows Switchgear Operating System
(WSOS) includes six new features.
Designed to offer increased flexibility in
communications, password security,
control and protection.
Three basic features are:
• Automatic Data Retrieval;
• New Password System; and
• User Defined Curves.
The advanced features are:
• Configurable IOEX;
• WSOS Monitoring System; and
• A DNP Configuration tool.
Automatic Data Retrieval
The Automatic Data Retrieval (ADR)
feature enables utilities to automatically
download a selection of switchgear data
during off-peak periods on the
communications network. To configure
the download periods simply select the
Day of the Week, Frequency (daily,
weekly, fortnightly or monthly), Start
and End times. The next step is to setup
the download data profile. This can be
any combination of the event log,
demand data, configurable history and
switchgear settings. ADR uses the
default WSOS communications settings
or an additional profile specifically for
using ADR.
New Password System
To offer better security, WSOS now has
an additional password system. The new
password system has separate passwords
for:
• Switch Operation
• Protection Settings
• Telecontrol Settings
• System Access and
• Remote Write Access.
It is therefore necessary to enter both the
Remote Write Access and data group
passwords to remotely change settings on
the switch. For example the remote user
has to enter the Write Access and
Protection passwords to change the
protection settings.
User Defined Curves
The User Defined Curves (UDC) feature

N-Series
Nu-Lec Reclosers
incorporates a Curve Editor and a Curve
Viewer. With the Curve Editor users can
create point-by-point a whole library of
protection curves, and upload up to five
curves to a recloser. Each curve can have
up to 30 (I, t) points entered in an Excel
spreadsheet. It is possible to view several
curves simultaneously in the Curve
Viewer, making it easy to compare and
coordinate multiple devices in the
network. This is very useful if grading is
difficult and the curve can be 'moved' to
achieve the required discrimination.
Configurable IOEX
With the configurable IOEX tool it is
possible to change the standard IOEX
setup and to customise the input/output
effects of the IOEX inputs. It is possible
to combine logic functions with the input
triggers to control the switchgear. For
example it is possible to use Input 1 to
always trip the switch. Input 2 can be
used to trip the switch if Protection
group A or B is active.
The IOEX outputs are controlled by
combining logic functions and
switchgear status. As an example it is
possible to activate Output 1 if a switch
is tripped manually and activate Output 2
if the switch tripped due to an over
current and Protection Group B is active.
It is also possible to control IOEX
Outputs with a SCADA system using
DNP3 protocol. This feature extends the
SCADA system beyond the recloser to
devices without communication abilities.
It would therefore be possible to monitor
external alarms like Bucholz, winding
and temperature.
Monitoring System
The WSOS Switchgear Monitoring
System reports Abnormal Conditions to
control room and technical staff. The tool
enables the switchgear to automatically
dial in via radio or modem and report
various state changes to WSOS in the
control room. These points are monitored
by the monitoring system. If an
Abnormal Condition occurs the system
can alarm locally or send callouts and

notifications.
Callouts are
sent out via
e-mail,
pager, SMS
and
telephone.
The message contains the identity of the
switch, the abnormal condition and the
cause of the condition. It is also possible
to add a customised message such as
directions to the switch. Upon receiving
the message the operator can dial the
WSOS control room and use DTMF
control to acknowledge, select and operate
the switchgear. Pre-recorded voice
messages are used to inform the remote
operator and prompt the person for further
action.These messages are in.WAV file
format and can be translated into other
languages if required.
In addition to the callout the system also
sends out an e-mail notification. The
notification includes the last 50 events in
the message. In general this message will
be sent to a different e-mail address
(example the protection engineer) to assist
in analysing the cause of the callout.
DNP Configuration Tool
The DNP Configuration tool allows users
to customise the points monitored and
controlled through a DNP3 SCADA
system. The customised mapping and I/O
logic are created using the tool and saved
to a DNP3 mapping file on the WSOS
computer. This file is linked to the
switchgear device configuration in WSOS
while Off-line (disconnected) from the
switchgear. Once this is completed the
user connects to the switchgear and writes
the new mapping into the controller along
with the switchgear device configuration.
