IMPACT OF URBANDEVELOPMENT ON CITY’S NATURAL
RESOURCES

- A Case study on Bangalore, India

Introduction:
“As a species we have lived in wild nature for hundreds of thousands of years, and
now suddenly most of us live in cities—the ultimate escape from nature. If we do not
learn to build, expand and design our cities with a respect for nature, we will have
no nature left anywhere.” - Peter Kareiva.

“While we found the effects of urbanization to be localized, cumulatively, they pose

a big threat to biodiversity. Our urban footprint covers much of the globe and is
coming closer to stomp out many natural resources and posing new risks even to
protected areas and parks.” - McDonald.

With 41 percent of India’s population expected to be concentrated in urban centers

by the year 2030, according to a UNDP report, it makes sense to rethink ‘ecology’
and understand its urban manifestation, wherein the role that trees, green cover
and water bodies play in defining the city’s climate, pollution, cultural values and
socio-economic opportunities can be evaluated.
Aim:
To manage, develop, and conserve the lakes and green space resources, to meet
the needs of current and future generations

Objectives:
1. To study the existing scenario of the city with respect to natural resources.
2. To evaluate the impact of urbanization on natural resources.
3. To identify the strategies for high quality management of resources and to
reduce the costs of mitigating adverse consequences.
4. To prepare a resource conservation plan for sustainable development of the
city.
Need for the study:
Due to the process of Urbanization the population of Bangalore increased at a very
high rate. The rapid growth of population resulted in a high demand for housing and
intensive land use. As a consequence depleted the image so called “The garden
city of India” and “The city of lakes”.
The study should help in understanding the environmental impacts of green spaces
in reducing pollution and mitigating microclimate changes in the city. It is a great
pity that many lakes and ponds of Bangalore had already been lost in the process of
urban development. The study is essential to understand the present condition of
water bodies and sources and causes of pollution.
To examining the effect of staggering urban growth on nature and people that finds
if we don’t improve urban planning now, we may lose natural resources like water
bodies, green covers etc.
Scope of the study:
Data Name: Chandrakanth. K Roll No: UP 959

Scope of the study includes in
1. Studying the urban growth and development pattern of Bangalore city.
2. Assessing the management, development and protection of natural
resources in an environmentally and economically sound manner in the
interest of the livelihoods of Bangalore.
Limitation of the study:
The study area namely the natural resources are limited to lakes and green
spaces.
