Introduc@on
•  Mobile  broadband  is  exploding
•  What  does  this  mean  for  operators?
•  How  can  new  technologies  and
solu@ons  tackle  emerging  issues?
•  Neu  Mobile  have  published  a  report
that  provides  detailed  analysis  of  the
impact  of  traffic  on  networks  and  how
new  solu@ons  can  help  operators
address  network  problems
•  Leading  investment  bank,  Barclays
Capital,  used  data  sourced  from  us  in
their  latest  research  report.

Mobile  broadband  usage  is  exploding

•  Subscrip@ons  are
growing  rapidly
•  Over  30%  of  all
broadband  in  some
countries

•  Usage  per  customer  is  growing

rapidly
•  Currently  tracking  fixed  with  a  lag
•  Strong  growth  likely  to  con@nue

Indoor  users  get  less  and  consume  more

•  Indoor  users  get  lower  data  rates

than  outdoor  users
•  This  is  because  the  signal  is  lower
and  more  robust  encoding  is  used

•  Indoor  users  take  a  dispropor@onate

percentage  of  cell  capacity  for  their  data
•  Indoor  users  require  more  of  the  cell’s
total  power  for  the  same  data  rate

Business  case  weak  for  new  sites

Marginal  cost  per  subscriber
•  Most  operators  have  deployed
HSPA  as  an  overlay
•  Business  case  for  HSPA  as  an
overlay  works  as  original  3G  is  a
sunk  cost
•  Business  case  for  building  new  sites
for  HSPA  looks  weak  as  data  has  to
take  fair  share  of  costs
•  Finding  new  sites  is  a  big  issue  for

Chart  shows  addi@onal  costs  per  subscriber  for  the  radio  network  when
HSPA  added
Assumes  1GB  per  month  and  cells  fully  loaded  so  this  is  best  case

Assumes  for  new  site  that  HSPA  carrier  carriers  share  of  all  costs

Capacity  is  running  out  but  there  are  new

cost  effec@ve  growth  solu@ons
•  Indoor  offload  –    move  traffic  to  alterna@ve  access  to
deliver  cost  and  performance  improvements
–  Lower  transport  costs
–  Free  up  macrocell  capacity
–  Provide  a  beger  customer  experience
•  Network  share  –  pool  assets  to  give  more  sites  at
marginal  extra  cost
•  Refarm  exis@ng  spectrum  –  add  extra  carriers  to
increase  cell  capacity

Indoor  Offload  –  Femtocells  &  Wifi

•  Femtocells  –  small  low  cost  base
sta@ons  using  DSL/cable  for  backhaul
•  Wifi  –  use  GAN/IWLAN  to  make  wifi
part  of  cellular  network
•  Provide  low  cost  capacity  and  coverage
•  Cheapest  way  to  provide  wide  area
coverage  and  capacity  in  urban  areas

•  Outside  urban  areas,  femtocells  and

wifi  remain  the  cheapest  way  to
provide  spot  capacity.
•  Price  differen@al  between  femtocell
and  wifi  significantly  narrows  as
number  of  customers  increases

Network  Share
•  Network  share  is  when  one  or  more
operators  pool  their  network  assets.
•  There  are  different  levels  of  sharing
•  Site  –  common  site  only
•  Node  B  –  common  node  B  and  site
•  RAN  –  complete  RAN  shared.

•  All  variants  deliver  both  direct  CAPEX

and  OPEX  savings
•  There  are  also  indirect  efficiencies  as
a  denser  network  gives  beger  indoor
coverage  which  leads  to  higher  cell
capaci@es

Spectrum  Refarming
•  Carriers  are  taken  from  GSM/CDMA
networks
•  Released  spectrum  is  formed  in  to  3G
carriers
•  800/850/900  spectrum  gives  beger
indoor  penetra@on  for  same  data  rate

•  Increasing  the  number  of  sites  at

lower  frequencies  increases  indoor
coverage  and  hence  indoor  data  rates
•  Addi@onal  carriers  increase  the
available  data  capacity  of  a  network

Summary
•  Mobile  broadband  traffic  is  exploding
•  Networks  are  running  out  of  capacity  and  conven@onal
growth  is  expensive
•  New  solu@ons  are  needed  to  grow
–  Offload  using  wifi  and  femtocells
–  Share  to  get  economies  of  scale
–  Refarm  to  get  beger  coverage  and  capacity
