Wooden mezzanine floors

Mezzanine flooring for commercial and

industrial applications is now available in
timber. Interest is growing in this relatively
new development in the UK.

Main beams and columns of wooden

mezzanine floors utilise Glulam (structural
laminated timber) in place of steel, whilst
the cold rolled galvanised steel
secondaries of traditional steel mezzanine
flooring are replaced by composite 'I'
section timber beams. The mezzanines are
decked using the familiar 38mm tongued and grooved particle board which can be
sourced with either virgin timber or recycled timber content.

Engineered steel fittings are used to achieve structural connections.

Timber construction offers ease of on site modification and lightness of components.

The warping and distortion associated with solid timber construction is avoided as the
stresses in the timber are evenly distributed in the engineered composite 'I' section
timber beams and glulam beams, which retain their dimensional stability. The
construction of the timber mezzanine is dry and consequently the structure will not be
subject to any drying out or shrinkage.

Lighter applications such as the creation of raised offices, service access platforms and
light storage use are best suited to timber construction, whilst damp or wet environments,
heavy duty applications or those subject to impact damage are better served by steel.
The wider range of materials now available enables the selection of the most appropriate
solution to satisfy environmental and corporate and social responsibility requirements.

As well as being a carbon sink, wood is a renewable resource, which can be recycled by
reconstitution in future timber products or reuse of structural components in construction.
The production and processing of timber to create glulam and composite components is
more energy efficient and has less environmental impact than the mining, processing and
reprocessing of iron ore and steel.

To summarise, timber offers the ability to cost effectively reduce the carbon footprint and
environmental impact of mezzanine floors, particularly in lightweight applications and
enhance businesses corporate and social responsibility.
