Steps in the Research Process

Determine the phenomenon or topic you are interested in studying.

Review existing evidence (the literature) on your topic. This can include the
background information, the work of other scholars on your topic, and work that
uses the research methods you are planning to use.

Make the problem as precise as you can. Think about the categories and
relationships that might be relevant to the phenomenon or topic you are studying.

Identify one or more appropriate data collection strategies. These are determined
by the availability of the data, your research questions, available resources (time
and money), your familiarity with these methods, and ethical considerations.

Carry out the research/collect the data.
At this point you may also go back to one of the previous steps.

Analyze and interpret your results. This means you have to organize your data to
make it easy to analyze. Interpret in this context refers to explaining what your
findings MEAN.

Report your findings.
In this way you are contributing to the literature on your topic and thus advancing
overall knowledge in your field. This is what research is all about!
