y Zahra (Ziba) Kazemi‐Ahmadabadi (1949 ‐ 2003) was an Iranian‐Canadian 
freelance photographer, residing in Montreal, Canada, who died in the custody 
of Iranian officials following her arrest. Iranian authorities insist that her death 
was accidental and that she died of a stroke while being interrogated. However, 
an autopsy observed obvious signs of torture: including a skull fracture, broken 
nose, crushed toe, missing fingernails, broken fingers, signs of brutal rape, 
marks from flogging, deep scratches on her neck, and severe abdominal

bruising. The Canadian government, as well as Kazemi's
di       ll   K i' family and supporters,

consider her death to be state‐sanctioned murder. 
y Farzad Kamangar was a Kurdish teacher, arrested in August 2006 
and sentenced to death in February 2008, after a trial that lasted 
y
five minutes, according to his lawyer. During his months of 
incarceration, he was exposed to extreme mental and physical 
torture which he described in a letter. Recently, Farzad was 
abruptly executed along with four others.

write to you of flowers, but flowers with scattered petals… 
y I jump out of bed in the middle of the night fearing his footsteps. My whole 
body shakes with the smallest sounds and my heart starts beating faster 
because I fear his arrival. I am always ready to escape. I leave the lights on at 
during the nights and I pass the days with tears and grief…
y Those who raped me laughed. There were three of them. All three were dirty 
and they each had a beard  They had terrible accents and foul mouths  Their

curse words were directed toward my entire family. Even though they saw I was 
a virgin, they accused me of being a whore and forced me to sign a statement 
that declared I was a prostitute...

destroyed…
y Some had broken arms, some had broken legs, and some had broken backs. 
Others like me had broken spirits, as if all of humanity was stripped from me… 
y I know that I will never be able to love a man or get close to him and trust him

y With my lifeless body lying on the ground of my cell, I would often hear their 
voices in the nearby cells displaying their fake manhood…
y I ask all people who have suffered like me to write. They need to express their 
suffering an   a  the  can because these are the same pains that Sadegh
suffering any way they can because these are the same pains that Sadegh
Hedayat (contemporary writer) referred to as, “pains that chew at a person’s 
soul.”..
y Taraneh Mousavi ((1991 ‐
99 2009) was a young Iranian woman who

reportedly died after being sexually abused while in custody, after being 
arrested for protesting the 2009 election results. Mousavi was 
reportedly arrested at a protest rally close to the Ghoba mosque in 
J , 9 ,
Tehran on June 28, 2009. Some weeks later, her mother received an 
anonymous call from a government source informing her that her 
daughter had been hospitalized for "rupturing of her womb and anus 
in an unfortunate accident". Taeb, the head of Basij forces. There are

left her to other prison guards who also raped her, and burned her body 
so that she is not identifiable.

Sabri, a 21 year old Iranian woman was arrested while

participating in the protest marking the 40th day of Neda Agha
Soltan's death. During two weeks in jail, she was investigated, 
tortured  threatened to death by hanging  and raped five times 
tortured, threatened to death by hanging, and raped five times 
by prison officials. Investigators made threatening phone calls to 
her for days after her release. The photo posted here was taken 
from her the same day as she was arrested by Basij members, and 
was posted in a blog that supports Ahamdinejhad.
y Lost his life in a hospital while the security forces stationed there 
withheld medical treatment and tied to the floor naked to check 
his records.

y Amir Mirza is another victim of torture and horrible treatment of 
political prisoners in Iran. In one of the last days of June he was

brutally beaten by Basijis on the street and arrested in Tehran. He 
was charged for crimes such as rioting, spying, plotting to overthrow 
the regime and acting as an agent against national security. 
y After three days of brutal beatings and torture he was released on a 
high bail paid by his family. Due to the extent of injuries, his family 
took him to a hospital for medical treatment. 
y In the hospital, the security forces denied treatment and tied him to 
the floor naked to check his records. He lost his life while savagely 
tied naked to the floor of the hospital. 
y The security forces did not release his body till the family paid 
significant sum of money and signed a document not to reveal the 
conditions of his murder.
y Committed suicide due to mental distress induced by 
repeated gang rape and torture

y On August 28th, a video was posted on YouTube about the 
suicide of a 23 year‐old man who was released from prison 
after repeated torture and gang rapes in prison by the 
security forces of Islamic Republic. 
y His father had to post a heavy bail for the son’s release.

y Realizing he was being followed by security forces, the 
young man wanted to avoid going through the same 
nightmare and committed suicide by jumping from a high 
pedestrian bridge.

monthly magazine about women's issues…

y Due to her outspoken criticism of authorities and also 
defense of the rights of Kurdish and Iranian women, 
she was tried in a Revolutionary court in April 2005 and 
was accused of endangering national security.Following
demonstrations in Kurdish inhabited areas of western 
Iran, she was arrested on 2 August 2005, and held in 
prison for 66 days...

says: "Its very difficult for me to talk about [what I went 
through], I'm partly worried that women who are

repeatedly raped after being arrested at an opposition rally...

slashes on the face  No bone fractures  but he was bruised all over

doctor said only four of his teeth were intact, the rest were broken.

asked what sort of beast had beaten him up like that. He was a 
broken man. He told us not to waste our money on him, and that

and feet together and hang you from the ceiling, turning you 
around and beating you with cables.”

came to me and tore my clothes. I tried to resist but two of them
