Fiji’s 2014 poll is a ‘go ahead’
but not under pressure
Fiji’s plans of going to the polls in 2014
will eventuate as planned and not because
it is pressured into it says Minister for
Foreign Affairs Ratu Inoke Kubuabula.
Kubuabola said: “It should be very
clearly understood by all, that when the
General Elections are held in Fiji in 2014,
it will not be because the Australian
Government has brought pressure to bear
on Fiji.”
Kubuabola was reacting to comments
made by Australia’s Prime Minister Julia
Gillard who said she was skeptical that
Fiji will be going to the polls in 2014
and that the best thing to do is maximize
pressure on Fiji.

Bainimarama when contacted earlier said
he did not want to comment on Gillard’s
statement.
However Commodore Bainimarama said
Gillard’s statement came as a surprise to
him as the Australian PM said she would
engage Fiji when she first came into
power.
“I really don’t want to comment on that,
it’s a change of tune from what she said
when she first came into power- that
she would engage Fiji,” Commodore
Bainimarama said.
“We have our plans in place and they
have their policy of isolation, I don’t
think these two will work,” he said.

dialogue and engagement, Fiji’s door
was open.”
He said he hoped such dialogue could
be conducted in a spirit of positive
diplomacy and that Canberra would soon
drop its prescriptive and negative policy
on Fiji.

says Julia Gillard
AUSTRALIA remains very skeptical
of Fiji’s promise to hold an election in
2014, says Prime Minister Julia Gillard.
Ms Gillard said it was important for
Australia, the US and other nations to
work together on Fiji to try to ensure the

Her comment followed reports that

Fiji, China celebrate 35th

anniversary
Fiji and the Peoples’ Republic of China
have marked the 35th anniversary of the
establishment of diplomatic relations
between them.
Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao exchanged
congratulatory messages with Fiji’s
Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe
Bainimarama on the occasion.
In his message, Premier Wen said, since
the diplomatic ties were established, both
sides witnessed the steady development of
bilateral relations, expanding exchanges
and co-operation in various fields.
The bilateral relations have not only
brought tangible benefits to both countries
and people, but contributed to peace,
stability and development in the region.
He stressed that the Chinese Government
attached great importance to its bilateral
relations with Fiji.
Premier Wen said China was willing to
work with Fiji on the 35th anniversary of
the establishment of diplomatic relations,
to achieve new and greater progress for
China-Fiji relations on the basis of the
Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence.
Prime Minister Commodore Bainimarama
said in his message that the cultural bond
between our two countries went well
beyond the past 35 years.
He said the strong bond and cordial state
currently witnessed in bilateral relations
was testimony to the respect and growing
understanding both countries developed.
“Our level of development has been

USAID back in Suva after 16 years
because of Chinese involvement
The United States has chosen Fiji as the
site for its expansion of aid to the Pacific
region for two reasons.
These are a desire to counter Fiji’s strong
relationship with China and because Fiji is
the regional hub.
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton disclosed
this during her eight-country tour of the
Asia-Pacific area.
She is on her way home via American
Samoa after visiting New Zealand and
Australia.
The US abandoned its Pacific aid post
16 years ago, leaving a gap that has been
keenly filled by China, which is expanding
its international influence through aid.
The US has publicly said for some time
that it believes it was a mistake to turn its
attention away from the Pacific.
It had been considering other locations for
its USAID base, including Honiara in the
Solomon Islands.
But because of the strengthening
relationship between Fiji and China and
the fact that Fiji is a hub for the Pacific, it
chose Fiji.
The USAID hub will begin with a budget
of US$20 million specifically for climate
change mitigation.
The Government of Commodore

“In the short term, we would like to see
steps that advance political freedoms,
such as allowing professional civilians
to return to key government ministries,”

given exclusive incentives from the Fiji
government.
The incentive is part of government’s terms
that have been listed under the expressions
of interests (EOI) to interested casino

partners have taken the bull by the horns
and invited senior C&I planners from
Australia, New Zealand and the US to Fiji
on a series of fact-finding missions.
The 34 participants - 5 Americans, 21
Australians and 8 New Zealanders
visited different resort properties in the
main tourist corridors on Viti Levu and
the Mamanuca Islands to view facilities
and meet with respective resorts’ C&I
management.
Properties involved in the exercise
included the Intercontinental Golf Resort
& Spa, Shangri-La’s The Fijian Resort &
Spa, the Westin Denarau Island Resort
& Spa, the Sofitel Resort & Spa, the
Sheraton Fiji, Outrigger on the Lagoon
and the Warwick Fiji Resort & Spa.

Sewing machines as
donation
Minister for Social Welfare, Women and Poverty Alleviation, Dr Jiko Luveni and Elder

IN a bid to improve the livelihoods of
disadvantaged women, the Latter Day
Saints Church donated 50 sewing machines
to the Ministry of Social Welfare.
LDS Pacific area president Elder James
Hamula said the donation was the result
of a visit he made to the ministry a few
months ago to enquire about how they
could assist the ministry.
“I was informed of the sewing machine
project so I told my colleagues it was
something we could do. So we decided to
purchase 50 sewing machines to distribute
to the women of Fiji,” he said.
The machines cost $17,000 and are the
beginning of assistance by the LDS
Church, says Elder James. Minister for

Social Welfare Dr Jiko Luveni said the
project came into existence when they
were approached by a non-government
organization which requested sewing
machines.
“We found out that not many women had
sewing machines and most of the items
they had was hand-sewn. So we made the
effort to secure as many sewing machines
as we could. We are trying to provide at
least two sewing machines for the 1164
villages in Fiji,” she said.
Dr Luveni said they had received donations
of sewing machines from an international
women’s group in China. So far the
ministry had donated 900 sewing machines
based on requests.

When a visionary leader gets
rejected - Jai Ram Reddy’s legacy
The missed
opportunity –
that was the
theme of the
afternoon and

Auckland on 30th October 2010 during the
launch of Dr Brij Lal’s In the Eye of the
Storm by the former Chairman of Fiji’s
Constitutional Review Commission and a
former Governor General of New Zealand,
Sir Paul Reeves.
In launching the book, Sir Paul said that
Jai Ram Reddy is the connecting thread
through which the book weaves the
history of Fiji since his appointment to
the Senate in 1972 until his retirement
from the Fijian Court of Appeal in 2003.
Sir Paul highly ranks the book as well
written, an expression of the author’s
encyclopaedic knowledge, his analysis
and his basic commitment and love of a
country of which he is an inseparable part.
He said the book is an admirable chronicle;
it is a commendable commentary and
interpretation of complexity, the lost
opportunity and the strength of human
spirit which make up the history of Fiji.
He said the following in 1993, and the book
begins with this memorable and prophetic
quote:
“I offer a vision which sees this beloved
land of ours united in its diversity, forged
out of adversity and built on trust. I offer
you a vision of Fiji of which historians
will say that, in the midst of tragedy, we
found courage and wisdom, and foresight
and determination to lead the nation away
from the precipice into a prosperous future.
I can only hope that my vision for this most
wonderful of nations will fulfil its promise.”
Unfortunately this vision could not be
fulfilled, because in 1999 while the Peoples
Coalition Government won the battle,
Professor Lal says Fiji unfortunately lost
the war. Then, as political commentator, I
had also laughed off Jai as a non-expedient
leader engrossed in multiracialism and
vision for the nation while the astute
politician Chaudhry fought on bread and
butter issues and won the battle. However
as the history remains testament to the
facts, Fiji and its democracy lost the war, as

this is evident in the politically embroiled
Fiji today.
This theme was again echoed in Sir Paul’s
launch speech where he revealed that the
book that was given to him, in it Dr Brij had
inscribed: “In memory of a Fiji now banished
beyond recall.” Sir Paul added that Jai in the
book had assessed his life in politics in Fiji
as:”It has been a wasted thirty years”. Sir
Paul was optimistic about Fiji in disagreeing
with both Dr Lal and Mr Reddy. “I want to
deny both of these statements. I would say
that nothing is ever lost, but in the end-all
is harvest. What Jai stands for, what 1997

society requires of us, that these will return in
some shape or other.”

National Disaster office Accident-free Diwali

the general public for paying attention to fire
safety advice during the Diwali weekend.
NFA acting chief executive officer Jone Koroi
said their fire safety awareness campaign
was a success.
Mr Koroi said there was no fire incidents
reported during the Diwali weekend.
Last year, a family lost their home in a fire
and the previous year a house burnt down
and one person died as a result of a fire
caused by a firecracker.
“Last year the total number of structural
fires was 228 and this year from January
to November the total number of structural
fires stands at 179,” said Mr Koroi.
He said support from the media this year
was an important element in their fire
safety awareness campaign.
“News releases and feature articles about
fire safety were sent out routinely by NFA
to all media contacts,” he said.
Mr Koroi said fire safety started at home
and people could save lives and belongings
if they followed simple fire safety rules.
“As we are into the festive season it is
important that people continue to practice
fire safety in order to prevent fires from
happening at their homes,” he said.
“Being fire safe is very important for every
person.
“It is to be noted that fire in any place can
lead to severe destruction.
“Fire safety begins at home; fire safety
does not require a complex procedure of
learning.”

Obama hails ties with Rolls-Royce shares

US President Barack Obama has hailed
deeper and closer ties with his host
India, which he said had established
itself as a world power and a natural ally
for America on the global stage.
Mr Obama heaped praise on the country
and it’s Prime Minister Manmohan Singh
at the end of a three-day trip, which saw
a raft of commercial deals signed and
agreements to cooperate more closely in
agriculture, health and energy.
The president said the principles of
democracy and human rights were
too often ignored around the world,
which was driven with conflicts and
misunderstandings between nations.
“For our two countries to be able to stand
together to promote these principles
in international forums, I think can
be incredibly powerful and incredibly
important,” Mr Obama said on Monday at
a joint press conference with Mr Singh.
Previously, Mr Obama had described India as
“indispensable” and a cornerstone of US policy
in Asia, where analysts say the democratic
South Asia giant is seen as a counterweight to
increasingly assertive and authoritarian China.
Mr Obama’s courtship of India reflects the
rapid growth in the country’s economy and
a shift in power to emerging nations as a
result of the global financial crisis, which
has hit Western powers hard.
Mr Singh, who enjoys a friendly relationship
with Mr Obama, said the allies would now
enjoy a relationship of “equal partners”, while
Mr Obama said earlier on Monday that India

counterpart Hu Jintao in Seoul this week.

characterized by mistrust and occasional

The United States is stepping up its
security measures for all inbound aircraft
in the wake of last week’s attempts to ship
explosive devices from Yemen.
Effective Monday a ban on all air cargo
from Yemen has been extended to include
Somalia.
In addition, no high-risk cargo will be
allowed on passenger aircraft. The U.S.
Department of Homeland Security has not
specifically defined what it means by high-
risk cargo.
However, toner and ink cartridges weighing
over 16 ounces fit the criteria as they’ve
been banned from carry-on and checked
bags on all domestic and international
flights bound for the United States.
The explosive devices from Yemen were
hidden in a printer’s toner cartridge.
All cargo that is deemed to be high-risk
will go through additional and enhanced
screening. Homeland Security is warning
that there will be an impact on international
mail packages, which now will be
individually screened and must be certified

1/3 cup cooking oil
2 medium sized onions, chopped
1 cup chopped celery
2 carrots, sliced
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon salt,
1/4 teaspoon pepper
Easy Egg Rolls
1 whole boneless skinless chicken breast,
chopped
1 teaspoon cornstarch
2 teaspoons soy sauce
3 tablespoons oil
3 green onions, chopped
14 ounces frozen stir-fry vegetables, finely
chopped
12 egg roll wraps, stored under damp
towel while recipe is prepared
Coat chicken in mixture of cornstarch and
1 teaspoon soy sauce. Heat 2 tablespoons oil
in pan or wok. Add chicken and green onion;
stirfry for three to four minutes, or until
chicken is no longer pink. Set aside in bowl.
Stir in 1 teaspoon soy sauce, then drain.

1 cup boiling water
1 can (7 1/2 oz) tomato sauce
4 tablespoons flour
1/3 cup water
Heat oil in large saucepan; brown shanks
in hot oil; remove shanks.
Add vegetables and sauté for 5 minutes.
Add vegetables and sauté for 5 minutes.
Add shanks; add garlic powder, salt,
pepper, rosemary, and bay leaf.
Combine bouillon cube and boiling
water; add to meat and vegetable mixture.
Stir in tomato sauce. Cover tightly and
simmer for about 2 hours or until shanks
are tender, stir occasionally.
Remove bay leaf.
Combine flour and water; stir into
mixture, stir, and cook until thickened.
(add 1 tablespoon oil if necessary).
Mix 1 tablespoon flour and 2 tablespoons
water; this will be your wrapper “glue.”
Position one wrapper so one corner faces
you. Place 3 tablespoons filling at wrapper
center. Fold bottom corner over filling.
Moisten left and right corners with “glue”;
fold to wrapper center, enclosing filling,
and seal to bottom corner. Brush “glue”
on top corners. Roll egg roll away from
you, wrapping up filling snugly. Press top
corner onto egg roll to close. Repeat for
each egg roll.
Fry three egg rolls at a time in oil until
brown on all sides; drain on paper towel.
Repeat until all egg rolls are fried. Serve
with soy, duck or mustard sauce.

This food group is your body’s main
source of energy and contains bread,
pasta, rice, potatoes, noodles, chapatti,
cereals and other starchy carbohydrates.
Refined and unrefined grains
The foods listed above (apart from
potatoes) are all produced from grains,
such as wheat, corn or rice. They should
be a part of all meals, filling about a
third of your plate. They can come in
two forms – refined or unrefined (often
known as whole grains).
Refined grains have been stripped of
their outer bran coating and inner germ
during the milling process, leaving only
the endosperm. They include white rice,
white bread and white pasta.
Fruits and vegetables
Fruit and vegetables are low in energy
and packed with vitamins, minerals,
protective plant compounds and fibre,
so they’re a great source of nutrients and
vital for a healthy diet
Five a day
Due to their nutritional and health
benefits, it’s recommended that fruit and
vegetables form the basis of your diet,
with a minimum intake of five portions
each day - about a third of your daily
food consumption.
Fruit and vegetables should be
incorporated into every meal, as well
as being the first choice for a snack.
Population studies have shown that
people who eat a lot of fruit and
vegetables may have a lower risk of
chronic disease, such as heart disease
and some cancers. Health benefits can
be gained from fresh, tinned (in natural
juice), frozen, cooked, juiced or dried

How much is a portion?

In a whole grain the bran, germ and
endosperm are all still present. The bran
is an excellent source of fibre; the germ
is a source of protein, vitamins and

breakfast cereals such as porridge,

•One handful of grapes or two handfuls
of cherries or berry fruits

•A serving (roughly 80g) of vegetables,
such as frozen or mushy peas, boiled
carrots or stir-fried broccoli
•Cooked dishes that contain significant

So how do you ensure an intake of five
portions a day? Here’s a typical plan:
•Glass of fresh orange juice or smoothie
for breakfast = one portion
•Small pack of dried apricots for mid-
morning snack = one portion
•Side salad with lunch = one portion
•Sugar snap peas and broccoli, served
with main meal = one portion
•Strawberries as dessert = one portion
Do remember that some fruits contain
many of their nutrients just under the
skin, so eating them with the skin on can
provide greater nutritional benefits and
the maximum amount of fibre compared
with just drinking the juice of the same
fruit.

Boiled or steamed?
Although fruit and vegetables are packed
with vitamins and minerals, many of
these essential nutrients can be easily
destroyed by heat when cooking and
during food preparation. Water-soluble
vitamins are especially vulnerable

To eat more fibre, try these healthy
swaps:

Fibre for weight control?
Fruit and vegetables are important
contributors to the intake of dietary
fibre, both soluble and insoluble. Fibre is
slowly digested and has a low Glycaemic
Index (GI). This means glucose will be
released steadily into the body over
several hours, allowing you to feel fuller
for longer, compared with high GI foods
that produce a rapid rise followed by a
subsequent fall in blood sugar, often
leaving you hungry soon after you’ve
eaten. This feeling of fullness produced
by the fibre within fruit and vegetables
can therefore help with weight control.
Fruit and vegetables also assist weight
management as they’re low in calories,
but remember that their calorific load
is determined by what you prepare
them with, so avoid the butter, cream
or cheese sauces, and dips that can
accompany them.

Vancouver Island Liberal MP Keith Martin
has announced he will not run in the next
federal election.
Martin, 50, has won the riding of Esquimalt-
Juan de Fuca, just west of Victoria, six times
for four parties since he defeated NDP MP
Dave Barrett in 1993.

symptoms of flesh-eating disease after two
cases surfaced.
Over the past two weeks, four homeless
people have arrived in emergency rooms
with Group A streptococcus infections.
Two of those cases developed into
necrotizing fasciitis — more commonly
known as flesh-eating disease. The patients
range in age from 18 to 55.
They weren’t associated with any one
shelter, so that’s why all shelters are being
asked to tell their clients to seek immediate
medical attention if they’re suffering fever,
muscle aches, vomiting or severe pain in
any one area.

POTTY TRAINING YOUR CHILD
CONTINUED FROM LAST WEEK
Even after he begins to use the potty, it is
normal to have accidents and for him to
regress or relapse at times and refuse to use
the potty. The process of being fully potty
trained, with your child recognizing when
he has to go to the potty, physically goes
to the bathroom and pulls down his pants,
urinates or has a bowel movement in the
potty, and dresses himself, can take time,
often up to three to six months for most
children. Having accidents or occasionally
refusing to use the potty is normal and not
considered resistance.
While it is recommended that you don’t
insist that he sits on the potty and you
should be prepared to delay training if
he shows resistance, at some point if his
resistance to using the potty persists,
especially after he is 3 -3 1/2 years old,
then you should consider him resistant to
potty training and you will need to change
your methods.
Early on in the training, especially if
your child is less than 3 - 3 1/2 years
old, resistance should be treated by just
discontinuing training for a few weeks
or a month and then trying again. At this
age (18 months to 3 years), resistance is
usually because your child just isn’t ready
to begin training.
Potty training resistance usually occurs
because your child has had a bad
experience at some point during potty
training, especially if he was started before
he was intellectually or psychologically
ready. Other times, especially with strong
willed or stubborn children, it may have
nothing to do with your technique or
timing, and you may have done nothing
wrong.
Reasons for developing a resistance to
potty training can include:
• being scared to sit on the potty chair
• flushing the toilet may have scared
him from wanting to sit on the toilet
• being pushed too early or fast before
he was ready
• severe punishment for not using the
potty or being forced to sit on the potty
• inconsistent training, especially
among different caregivers
• he may have had a painful bowel
movement from being constipated. If
this is the case, treat his constipation
and wait until he is having regular, soft
bowel movements before you begin
training again.

have other delays in his development.
At this point, if your child is totally resistant
to being potty trained, then it is best to just
make him responsible for when he wants to
use the toilet. This includes not punishing
him for mistakes and not reminding him
to use the potty. If he seems fearful, you
can try and discuss calmly what it is about
using the potty that scares him.
While you may get a lot of negative
feedback from friends or family members
about not being more aggressive with
getting your child potty trained, you should
be firm and let them know that you are
working on it and remind them that not all
children potty train at the same time.
In addition, it can be helpful if you:
• establish a reward or incentive for
using the potty. This should include
lots of praise and attention when he
uses the potty. It can also include a star
addition
or reward chart on which you child
can place stickers whenever he uses
the potty. After a certain number of
days that he has stickers, then he can
get a reward, such as toy, etc.
• have your child be involved in changing
himself when he wets or soils himself.
This can include getting a new diaper,
taking the dirty diaper off, cleaning
himself (although he will probably
need help after bowel movements), and
throwing the dirty diaper away.
• At some point you can change him into
regular under ware. You can talk about it
beforehand and maybe have a ceremony
where he throws away the left over
diapers or you may just decide not to buy
any new ones. Now, when he does wet
or soil himself, you can have him help
to clean out his under ware in the sink
or bathtub. You may even have him put
them in the washing machine and wait
with you while they are getting washed
and dried. He should then dress himself.
This method is not for everyone, but is
usually very effective. You can also have
him clean up after himself if he wet or
soiled the floor.
• Limit him to having BMs in the
bathroom. This isn’t always possible,
but is easy if he always asks for a diaper
just to have a bowel movement. Next,
have him sit on the potty to have a bowel
movement, even if he continues to wear
his diaper. Then work on getting his
diaper off by opening it and eventually
taking it off. During this process, you
should give lots of praise and rewards
during each step.

to switch loans
ING DIRECT is looking to take
advantage of the backlash against the
big banks by offering $1000 to customers
who switch their mortgage to the small
lender.
The foreign-owned bank says anyone who
brings their mortgage across to ING Direct
and opens a transaction account before
June next year will receive $1000.
Customers need to register for the offer by
the end of November.
“Switching banks should be easier and this
$1000 is an incentive for people to start the
process,” ING Direct chief executive Don

A BABY koala is fighting for its life at
Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital after

Australia Zoo spokeswoman.
The penalty for deliberately shooting a
koala is a $225,000 fine or two years in

The female joey has been named Frodo by
Australia Zoo rescuers who found her after
a tip-off from the public at Jimna on Friday.
The joey has had emergency surgery at
the wildlife hospital and veterinarians
removed only three of 15 gun pellets.
Australia Zoo vet Amber Gillett said the
joey, believed to be aged between 14 and 16
months, is in a “critical but stable” condition
and receiving antibiotics and fluids.

scan boycott
Australian pilots are monitoring moves
by their American counterparts who have
been told to boycott controversial full-
body scanners that capture images of a
passenger’s naked body.
The Allied Pilots Association, which
represents more than 12,000 pilots in the
US, says the security devices at airports pose
serious health risks and breach privacy.
With the technology soon to be introduced
in Australia, the vice-president of the
Australian and International Pilots
Association (AIPA), Captain Richard
Woodward, says pilots here have similar
concerns.
“The principal issue is not only privacy.
It’s total radiation exposure,” he said.
“The allowable limit for radiation workers
is 20 mSv per annum. And the average
pilot, depending on where they’re flying,
gets between three and six.
“For instance, if you fly to London or over
to South America it’s equivalent to a chest
X-ray every time you fly.
“So radiation is cumulative and going
through these machines would just add to
the radiation, the total radiation the crew is
getting exposed to.”
‘Broken promise’
Captain Sam Mayer from the Allied Pilots
Association says pilots in the US have
been advised to opt out.
“What that means is not to subject
themselves to the full-body scan and
instead get the physical full body pat
down,” he said.
Captain Mayer says there is not enough
evidence about the potential health risks
of the devices and pilots are worried about
being exposed to radiation.
“Our pilots sometimes have to go through

see what sort of imaging equipment they want
to put in and use,” he said.
“We certainly have our preference for non-
ionizing radiation type of equipment. So we
have had preliminary talks with the security
authorities and we’ll continue that.”
A spokeswoman for Transport Minister
Anthony Albanese says the technology to be
introduced in Australia will be more advanced
than the machines used in the US.
She says safety checks will be carried
out on all equipment by the Australian
Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety

What is the NAFTA exemption?
Many goods made in Canada, the U.S. and
Mexico are subject only to the GST and
applicable sales taxes. That means you can
bring them back without paying duty, even if
you’re only across the border for a few hours.
If you stay longer, the goods qualify under
your personal exemption. You would not
have to pay duty, but you would have to
pay tax on the amount that your purchase
exceeds your exemption.
The list includes books, cellphones,
cordless telephone sets, video games,
antiques, most types of original art, picks

handed pruners and shears (including
poultry shears), juice extractors, hair-
removing appliances, hair dryers, electric

No. Clothes must be made in Canada, the

and you have the following health concerns:

or medical treatment; or
•Frail or at risk of serious illness or
complications.
Is it influenza or a cold?
The following table can help you determine
whether you have influenza or a cold.
What should seniors know about the
influenza vaccine?
The influenza or flu vaccine is a safe
effective way to help people stay healthy,
prevent illness, and even save lives. As
people age, they may be at higher risk
of influenza and complications. Doctors
consider seniors to be at high risk of getting
very sick from influenza and advise all
seniors, and their household contacts and
caregivers, to get an influenza vaccine or
shot each year.
The influenza vaccine is provided free
to seniors. Call your doctor or local public
health unit to get your annual influenza
vaccine or flu shot.
This information is provided for knowledge and education purposes only. Individuals should visit their physicians for more information on their health.
What is influenza?
The influenza vaccine is very safe. The
influenza vaccine cannot give you influenza.
The vaccine contains dead influenza viruses
that cannot cause infection.
Most people have no symptoms after
they get the influenza vaccine. Some may
have redness or soreness for one or two
days where the needle was given.
Mild influenza-like symptoms may occur
in some people, especially those being
vaccinated for the first time. Symptoms can
include mild fever, headache and aching
muscles, starting within 6 to 12 hours and
ending within 24 to 48 hours. These are less
severe and last a very short time compared
to influenza infection.
Some people with certain medical
conditions or allergies should not get the
influenza vaccine. Ask your doctor or public
health nurse if you have any questions.
When should seniors get the influenza
vaccine?
It is important for seniors to get the influenza
vaccine before the influenza season starts.
In British Columbia, the vaccine is available
starting in October or early November. For
the best protection, you should try to get the
influenza vaccine by the end of November
to give your body enough time - about
two weeks - to build immunity before the
influenza season starts. This will also help
your body maintain its immunity during
the peak of the influenza season, usually
between November and April. However,
the influenza vaccine can provide protection
if given at any time during the season.
In addition to an influenza shot, seniors 65
years and older should be vaccinated against
pneumococcal disease. The pneumococcal
vaccine protects against infections of the
brain, bloodstream, lungs, or ear. It is safe
to get the influenza and pneumococcal
vaccines at the same time. However, the
pneumococcal vaccine protects against the
disease for several years so you should not
get this every year.
Influenza Vaccination of Caregivers
Influenza vaccination is encouraged
and provided free for family members,
caregivers, health care workers and others
who are in close contact with seniors.

and Facts
Getting immunized against influenza or the
‘flu’ is a safe, effective and healthy choice
to make. The influenza virus can cause
serious illness and even death for people
with certain chronic health concerns. The
influenza vaccine, or flu shot, is the best

Many people use the term the ‘flu’ to refer
to any illness caused by a virus, such as
‘stomach flu’. However, the influenza virus
causes illness that tends to be more severe
than other viruses.

Fact: The vaccine does not protect against

stomach illnesses, often called ‘stomach
flu’. The influenza virus is very different
and more severe than the common cold or
the ‘stomach flu’. Influenza vaccine only
helps to protect against the viruses that
cause influenza.
Myth: The vaccine does not work because
you still get influenza.
Fact: At any time, there are many different
types of viruses around that can cause
symptoms like influenza, but are not
actually the influenza virus. The influenza
vaccine contains the three strains or types
of influenza viruses that health experts
think are likely to cause influenza during
the winter. The vaccine protects against
only those viruses. Because these strains
may change each year, a person needs to
get the influenza vaccine each year to be
protected against new strains. When the
strains in the vaccine are well-matched
to the strains of influenza virus in the
community, the vaccine prevents influenza
in more than 7 of 10 vaccinated persons. In
elderly people and people who have certain
chronic health conditions, the vaccine may
not work as well to prevent infection, but
it still decreases symptoms and the risk of
serious health concerns or complications.
Myth: You are pregnant and should not
get the influenza vaccine.
Fact: An influenza vaccine is safe during
pregnancy. In fact, pregnant women who
will be in their 3rd trimester during the
influenza season, and pregnant women
with high risk conditions, such as heart
or lung disease, diabetes or weakened
immune systems, are recommended
to get the influenza vaccine to protect
themselves. Influenza vaccine is provided
free to pregnant women who will be in
their 3rd trimester during the influenza
season, or who have high risk conditions.
If you have any questions about getting
an influenza shot during your pregnancy,
speak with your doctor or health care
provider.
Healthy pregnant women who may deliver
their baby during the influenza season
should get an influenza shot to protect
their newborn baby. Babies less than six
months of age, especially newborns, are
at high risk from the complications of
influenza, but they cannot be vaccinated
because their immune response to the
vaccine is not as strong.
Vaccination for mothers and other close
contacts can help protect babies and
reduce their risk of infection. It is safe for
babies to breastfeed after mothers receive
the influenza vaccine.
Immunization has saved more lives in
Canada in the last 50 years than any other
health measure.

Skanda Shasti Puja

Shiva and Goddess Parvati gave birth to Lord Muruga –
the most handsome god and the commander of the Devas.
Lord Muraga then appeared to fight the demons and the
fight continued for six days and killed all the attendants
and friends of demon Surapadman. On the final day, there
was intense battle between Muruga and Soorapadman.
Finally, Lord Muruga pierced the body of Surapadma
with his Vel (lance). Suddenly, demon Surapadma
transformed into a huge mango tree but Lord Muruga
cut the tree vertically into two pieces with His Vel.
The two pieces transformed into a peacock and cock. Lord
Muruga took the peacock as his vahana or vehicle and the
cock was given a place on his banner. This event is popularly
known as Surasamharam.
The famous ‘Vetri Vel’ chanting that takes place on the Shasti
day is associated with the victory of Skanda over demon
Soorapadman.
The day is of great significance at the Lord Muruga
Temples in South India, Malaysia, Singapore, South
Africa and Sri Lanka. The most famous Soorasamharam
festival takes place at the Tiruchendur Murgan Temple -
the divine action of Lord Muruga is re-enacted on the day
and it is witnessed by thousands of people.

Vancouver to crack Vancouver cab fares

The City of Vancouver is going after
drivers who rack up multiple parking
tickets by implementing an adjudication
system instead of sending disputed parking
violations to court.
Councilor Geoff Meggs says the city is
owed around $8 million in uncollected
fines because so many tickets are tied up
new system, which uses a provincially
appointed adjudicator rather than a justice
of the peace to rule on disputed tickets.
Those who lose their cases will have to pay
an extra $25 fine.
“Forty municipalities have already done
this and are reporting good results,” said
Meggs.

The young Asian man who boarded an
international flight disguised as an older
Caucasian man was scheduled to appear
before an Immigration and Refugee
Board hearing Monday.
The man, who flew from Hong Kong to
Vancouver on an Air Canada flight Oct.

identity, has been in the custody of the
Canada Border Services Agency since
he was met by CBSA officers when the
plane landed. He is seeking refugee status
in Canada.
An internal CBSA alert about the case
was leaked last week, complete with
photos of the young man both in and out
of disguise.
It is still not clear how the man managed
to board the plane, though there are
reports Monday that he may have used a
fake U.S. passport.
The man’s Canadian lawyer says his
reason for fleeing isn’t unique.
“He is suggesting he has participated in
actions which would be considered legal
in Canada but subject to pretty ruthless
suppression in China,” Lee Rankin told
QMI Agency, declining to go into further
details.
Rankin said the fact that the photos of his
client were leaked may have put the man
at risk if he is made to return to China.
“The [Chinese government] don’t like it
when nationals claim asylum and they
find out about it,” he said. “If they fail,
there is a concern they will be imprisoned.
We’re not dealing with Switzerland or
Sweden here. Unfortunately someone has
decided to make a faux célébrité out of
this poor guy.”
The man’s lawyer, Lee Rankin, told QMI
Agency Sunday that the leaked photos
may have put the man at risk if he is
returned to China.
Rankin expects his client will remain in
custody after the hearing.
