UPCOMING EVENTS
Food For Mood – New series of workshops: January – March 2011 *Free and open to all*
On Tuesday afternoons, starting January 11th, CoolTan Arts will be running
workshops around the production of the Food For Mood cookbook.
Everyone is welcome, and there will be a variety of artistic and practical
activities relating to books and food:
- contributing recipes and discussing food
- creative writing, local research, interviews
- writing, editing, design and layout
- learning about the world of book publishing
- food heritage of Southwark

For anyone who's interested, this is a chance to be on the steering committee for creating the cookbook.
If you'd rather just attend for enjoyment, that's fine too - you can do as much or as little as you like!

CoolTan Arts Largactyl Shuffle: Keep fit and keep well!


15 Jan 2011, 12noon; Meet at Maudsley Hospital
Come and join CoolTan Arts’ Largactyl Shuffle in January, have a brisk walk through Southwark and beat the
winter blues. Walk and talk, join our guided cultural walk and enjoy an afternoon out, with creative, fun and
easy ways to keep fit in the park!
Come along, learn new things about Southwark and its history of mental
health, meet like-minded people and make friends. The Largactyl Shuffle is
the perfect opportunity!
Walkers meet at 12noon at the main entrance of Maudsley Hospital, Denmark
Hill, London SE5 8AZ and walk to Burgess Park. Call CoolTan Arts on
07985658443 if you cannot find the group of walkers on the day.
5 Mile walk through the back streets of Southwark- allow 4 hours. Feel free to
bring sandwiches and a bottle of water. The walk is free but a voluntary
contribution will be appreciated, all money goes towards CoolTan Arts.

CoolTan Arts Open Day: Tuesday 25th January from 2.30pm- 5pm
Come and join us for our open day on Tuesday 25th January, from 2.30-5pm, find out more about CoolTan Arts
and how you can get involved.
There’ll be a short presentation about CoolTan’s workshops and activities, the referral process and a short
introduction to Personalisation at 2.30pm. Then you have the opportunity to try one of our taster workshops
from 3pm onwards, including our new ‘Food for Mood’ Workshop.

CoolTan Poetry Book


With the great success of our Thursday morning poetry group came an amazing poetry book. An Anthropology
of CoolTan artists’ words, thoughts and feelings. Get a copy now for friends and family. The books are now

Art exhibition ‘CoolTan Creations’ at Oxford House


20th Jan – end of February
CoolTan Arts has a new art exhibition at Oxford House Gallery, with works from participants and tutors. This
multifarious array will boast something to suit everyone’s fancy, from abstract to realist and oils to
watercolours. Examining the extraordinary, the ordinary and the imaginary through art and mind!
We organise a visit for CoolTan participants, volunteers, staff and tutors in February.

Introduction to the Recovery Star

Thursday, 13 January, 11am-2pm
CoolTan Arts is pleased to introduce Sahara Hassan as the Recovery Star Worker, whose role is delivering
the Recovery Star on a one-to-one training and peer-support basis.
Join the Recovery Star Introduction on 13th January with trainers from Mental Health Provider Forum
(MHPF): Kerry Duffy and Helen Blacker. Learn what the Recovery Star is and how it was developed, how the
Ladder of Change can be used to measure and support change.
Access to Recovery Star hosted by CoolTan Arts, via the Mental Health Provider Forum (MHPF), is for existing
CoolTan workshop participants, tutors, staff, volunteers - please contact CoolTan for more details.
The training is primarily for people involved already with CoolTan Arts - colleagues in other organisations
please get in touch!

Community Advocacy meeting Wednesday 19th January 3pm-4.30 pm:


We look in more details at the effects of the cuts, and any actions that the community advocacy group would
like to take. We can also look a bit more at personal health budgets, and at the roll-out of personalisation
generally. Any ideas for topics/ areas for discussion are very welcome.

The Personalisation Event planned for the 14th January has been postponed, while further information about
the Personalisation process is being developed. Southwark LINK and members of the SUC’s focus group on
Personalisation will be involved with this event, and if you are interested in helping to plan and develop this
event please let me know. It has been suggested that the event is to take place in early February, but is yet to
be confirmed.

Self-Advocacy Training Skills Programme
Self-advocacy skills training can assist in knowing and accessing your rights and getting your
voice heard in many situations.
Workshops continue: Wednesday mornings from 11am, Thursday afternoons from 2pm at
CoolTan Arts unless otherwise advertised.
There will be an opening of Programme 2 Self-advocacy Skills Training with "An Introduction
to Advocacy". Programme 1 will run concurrently to completion in early 2011.

Join a regular workshop at CoolTan


Do you need to get out of the house? Come along to one of CoolTan’s workshops to meet people, learn
new skills, have fun, and break out of isolation with like-minded people. Our workshops are open to any
adults experiencing mental distress with access to direct payments or other funding. Please contact

CoolTan Arts can work with GPs and other health professionals to meet the social care needs of their clients.
We are very keen to meet you and your teams and tell you more about the services CoolTan Arts offers.
