COURSE DESCRIPTION
The theme for Earth Systems Science is systems. The Main objectives of this course follow the Utah Curriculum for
integrated science and are divided into individual units. These units include the following topics:
- Students will understand the scientific evidence that supports theories that explain how the universe and solar system
developed.
- Students will understand that the features of Earth’s evolving environment affect living systems, and that life on Earth
is unique in the solar system.
- Students will understand that gravity, density, and convection move Earth’s plates and this movement causes the
plates to impact other Earth systems.
- Students will understand that water cycles through and between reservoirs in the hydrosphere and affects the other
spheres of the Earth system.
- Students will understand that Earth's atmosphere interacts with and is altered by the lithosphere, hydrosphere, and
biosphere.
- Students will understand the source and distribution of energy on Earth and its effects on Earth systems.

CLASSROOM ASSISTANCE and TECHNOLOGY

The website listed above is designed to help students and parents keep track of what is going on in class, obtain assignments, and has
links to websites that might help with the class. This year our classroom is fortunate enough to receive some technology that was not
previously available to us. As such, some assignments/activities will be done electronically. Please be aware that in trying to
incorporate more technology in the classroom, there are going to be unanticipated “glitches”. If you run into problems please let me
know. You will need to create a gmail account. This will be used in our classroom as part of the technology integration. If possible
please use your first and last name, it should look something like this firstlast@gmail.com

TO CREATE A GMAIL ACCOUNT

Go to the class website*click on 9th grade* click on gmail*click on create a gmail account. This will take you to an external website to
create your gmail account. Fill in the information and write down your gmail account on the bottom of the disclosure document.

GRADING POLICIES

Assignments Assignments are designed to help students learn the material. Most assignments are done in class and will not be
homework. Due dates will depend on the length of the assignment. Late work will be accepted for one week after the due date and
will be docked 50%. After work is one week late it will no longer be accepted. If a student is absent when an assignment is due, it is
their responsibility to get the work and make it up. All assignments and tests when handed back should be saved in a 3 ring binder or
folder with brads.

Homework Homework is usually work that was not finished in class, or extra practice for a difficult concept. Students will
be informed of the due date.

Tests Tests are typically given at the end of a unit. Sometimes tests will be given more that once during a unit in
order to cut down the information on one test. If a student is absent the day of the test, they will be expected to take the test the
next school day. If there has been an extend absence students will need to make arrangements to get information covered in class
and take the test before or after school. The student will receive a zero on the test until it has been taken. Tests will be corrected
by the teacher and returned as soon as possible. ANYONE CAUGHT CHEATING ON A TEST WILL RECEIVE A ZERO FOR
THAT TEST AND WILL NOT BE ABLE TO MAKE IT UP.

Test re-takes Sometimes students do not do as well as they would like to on a test. If that is the case a test may be re-taken
with the following conditions

The re-take test will not be the exact same test. Usually it will be slightly harder, because I want to encourage students
to do their best on the first test.

The re-take test will need to be done before or after school.

Students may only re-take each test one time.

Grade Scale: Students will receive whatever grade they earn in the class. Grades will be calculated according to the school
grading scale. Extra credit will be allowed only if there are no missing assignments. Please see class website for extra credit
options.

ATTENDANCE

Absences: It is extremely important that students be in class every school day. Important material for the course is presented
every day and assignments for the course will be missed. Due to the nature of science we will be doing a number of labs that
require equipment and supplies not found at home. It is not always possible to make up a lab and points may be lost if it is
missed.

Accommodations for disabilities will be made according to school policy

DISCIPLINE POLICY

Students that follow classroom rules can receive privileges such as, prize box coupons, note/call home

Any student who continually causes problems in the classroom by breaking the class rules will go through the “responsible
thinking procedure”.

Please cut off bottom portion and return. Save the top portion for reference.
