INTRODUCTION

Community health nursing is described by the American Nurses Association as a form of

nursing practice which promotes and preserves the health of populations by integrating the skills

and knowledge relevant to both nursing and public health. The practice is comprehensive and

general but is not limited to particular age or diagnostic group; it is continual and is not limited to

episodic care. While community health nursing practice involves nursing directed to individuals,

families and groups, the dominant responsibility is to the population as a whole.

Community Health Nursing is a specialized field of nursing practice. Its basic knowledge

and skills are anchored on nursing theories and important concepts from the science of public

health (Maglaya, 2004). It does not only cater the health need of the community but the

community as a whole. One aspect of community health nursing is the COPAR or Community

Organizing-Participatory Action Research Process.

Community Organizing-Participatory Action Research Process is a continuous and

sustained process of educating the people to let them understand and develop their critical

awareness of the existing conditions; it is working with the people collectively and efficiently,

discover their immediate and long term problems and mobilizing the people to develop their

capabilities and readiness to respond and take action on their immediate needs toward the

solution of their long-term problems (Jimenez, 2005). It is a unique venue for student nurses and

other health care providers to reach out to impoverished, marginalized and depressed areas so as

to aid the community residents in elevating their standard of health and status in life through

proper education and active participation.

In line with this, the fourth year students of Ateneo de Davao University College of

Nursing were tasked to devise a case study that will showcase COPAR. The Group BSN 4G-2

AND 4H-1 of the Ateneo de Davao Unviersity, College of Nursing were given the opportunity to

be exposed at Purok 4 and Purok 4A of Barangay Riverside, Calinan District Davao City. From

November 11, 2010 to December 11, 2010, the group implemented structured activities in

cooperation with the residents of the said community in order to address community perceived

problems assessed through strategic research during the previous semester.

accomplishments of our projects towards the progression of the community assigned to us, there

it a great success.

This last exposure in the community is very memorable. We walk for long hours under

the heat of the sun, met new people, learned a lot of things during the seminars, and helping the

people to be more assertive and cooperative. Indeed, our experiences in the community were

once in a lifetime and as we will come back, we are looking for another wonderful journey. The

Group 4G2 and 4H1 humbly appreciate and thank all those who have made this exposure a

successful and a very enjoyable learning experience.

OBJECTIVES

General Objective:

The implementation of project proposals for the designated community to address

community concerns assessed through utilizing a systematic research process with the

collaboration of the community residents is the main goal of this undertaking. It is aimed to

empower the people through working towards a positive change through the spirit of unity and

initiative.

Cognitive:

• To help the community residents identify problems within their area, plan and implement

corresponding solutions

• To formulate activities that will empower the people towards the solution to their

problems

• To raise the awareness of the community regarding several health conditions and other

civic issues surrounding them

• To disseminate information regarding primary healthcare focused on the prevention of

disease and promotion of health by utilizing resources readily available in the community

• To teach the community how to establish their own organization and create a strong

social network that would capacitate them to work towards sustainable progress in their

joint efforts

Affective:

• To ignite a spirit of positive change in the community residents to help them transform

into better and more open individuals

Specific Objectives:

In achieving the general objective, the group has formulated the following specific objectives.

• Conduct a courtesy call at the Barangay Hall in Calinan and Mintal Barangay Health

Center

• Re-establish and maintain rapport with the community residents in order to obtain their

interest, participation and cooperation

• Conduct a secondary ocular survey of the community to note any changes in the physical

structure of the area

• Conduct a general assembly of all community residents to recap the previously identified

problems in the community, present the Community Action Plans for the five identified

priority problems and to inform the residents about the upcoming activities

• Plan out the specific programs and activities which will address the prioritized

community problems

• Create identified Community Health Action Plans to help substantiate the group’s

courses of action
