nursing practice which promotes and preserves the health of populations by integrating the skills
and knowledge relevant to both nursing and public health. The practice is comprehensive and
general but is not limited to particular age or diagnostic group; it is continual and is not limited to
episodic care. While community health nursing practice involves nursing directed to individuals,
Community Health Nursing is a specialized field of nursing practice. Its basic knowledge
and skills are anchored on nursing theories and important concepts from the science of public
health (Maglaya, 2004). It does not only cater the health need of the community but the
community as a whole. One aspect of community health nursing is the COPAR or Community
sustained process of educating the people to let them understand and develop their critical
awareness of the existing conditions; it is working with the people collectively and efficiently,
discover their immediate and long term problems and mobilizing the people to develop their
capabilities and readiness to respond and take action on their immediate needs toward the
solution of their long-term problems (Jimenez, 2005). It is a unique venue for student nurses and
other health care providers to reach out to impoverished, marginalized and depressed areas so as
to aid the community residents in elevating their standard of health and status in life through

In line with this, the fourth year students of Ateneo de Davao University College of
Nursing were tasked to devise a case study that will showcase COPAR. The Group BSN 4G-2
AND 4H-1 of the Ateneo de Davao Unviersity, College of Nursing were given the opportunity to
be exposed at Purok 4 and Purok 4A of Barangay Riverside, Calinan District Davao City. From
November 11, 2010 to December 11, 2010, the group implemented structured activities in
cooperation with the residents of the said community in order to address community perceived

General Objective:

empower the people through working towards a positive change through the spirit of unity and
