Specimen Professional Review Report for Applicant X

This specimen review has been prepared to demonstrate to applicants the typical standard of
Professional Review Report (PRR) that is required when applying for Incorporated Engineer
status. Applicants for professional status should be capable of writing a summary of their career
to date and identify where the competencies required by UK-SPEC have been met. Indeed, the
Assessors use the PRR to determine whether the applicant has achieved the correct competence
level. It is essential that all applicants complete their PRR conscientiously. The IMechE offers
this specimen for guidance only and emphasises that the PRR is a personal report and must not
be a direct copy of this specimen.

It is strongly recommended that applicants cross relate (in the right hand column) their work in
the report to where it is felt the competencies of UK-SPEC have been met.

2.0 Demonstration of Competence UK-SPEC

Ref
The following sections detail three projects where my involvement has demonstrated my

competence in line with the requirements set out in the UK-SPEC (referenced throughout).

2.1 ABC Waste Water Treatment Works

ABC Waste Water Treatment Works was a Company X Investment Project led by ABC,

where I was the Lead Mechanical Engineer working on a secondment from XYZ Ltd. The

project gave me the opportunity to demonstrate my technical competence with my primary

responsibility in the technical design of the wastewater treatment works and two

associated transfer pump stations.

Initially I was involved with the planning and programming stage of the project where I

was responsible for reviewing the Mechanical Design Programme and providing feedback to

the Project Engineer on the anticipated completion of project deliverables in line with client C2;D1

requirements. As well as advising on further tasks requiring attention to aid the project

completion, I agreed a plan with the project team for completing the required Mechanical C1

output in a sequence to provide efficient operation of the project process. D3

From the outset of the project I proceeded to investigate and review the various

technologies available to achieve the desired process criteria, liasing with potential D1

suppliers with the aim of providing suitable solutions. In carrying out this activity, I

significantly extended my knowledge of wastewater treatment process allowing me to A1

A2;B3
improve the effectiveness of the plant by specifying appropriate innovative technology D1;D3

available. Defining the plant required for the works through discussion with the project

team and various suppliers, I was able to develop the mechanical project deliverable

documents with a suitable degree of information for the detailed design of the project. To

maintain a traceable quality system, I created and maintained a document register C4

providing details of all mechanical documentation, allowing transparency in progress of

design for presentation to the Project Engineer. This was also adopted by the design

team’s Electrical Engineer.

Throughout the project I continually developed key documents as the project progressed.

These documents included the Process & Instrumentation Diagrams and the General

Arrangement Drawings, which were regularly modified as the design developed with B1

information received from the client and potential suppliers selected under the client’s
A2
framework agreements. In the development of the Process & Instrumentation Diagrams,

as well as incorporating the required equipment, valves and instrumentation, I ensured

E1
that the presentation was in line with the client’s and British Standard requirements. Each

valve, item of plant and instrument given a unique tag number to assist with future asset

quality control by maintaining the information on a Mechanical Equipment Schedule.

C4
In my development of the General Arrangement Drawings, I completed the layout of the

site with consideration given to safe operability and access to plant, as well as the
B2;E2
environmental impact of the site. In completing this document I was able to develop the
E3
Site Hydraulic Profile using standard calculation methods.
A1

Following my initial inquiries with potential suppliers, I would appraise the technical and
B1
commercial information received; providing feedback to the project team and allowing me
D2
to develop the plant specifications. As well as being in line with client specifications, I also
B2
ensured that plant specification documents and data sheets were completed in line with the
B3
Water Industry Mechanical & Electrical Specifications. Individual plant specifications

completed were incorporated into the Mechanical Installation Specification for the project.
E1
To determine the plant duty requirements for pumping plant, I used standard calculation

methods for determining pump system pressure losses, based on the flow requirements
A1
set out in the Process Documentation and the layout/level of the site. Throughout my

experience as a Mechanical Engineer I have significantly advanced my knowledge of

pumped system pressure losses for both Newtonian and Non-Newtonian fluid systems, and
D2
have given a presentation to peers on these methods of calculation.

I am also responsible for checking other engineer’s calculations within the XxLtd office.
A2
In developing the pressure loss calculations for one of the project’s pump stations I

recognised the need for a surge analysis study due to the length of rising main, and
B2
through the company’s annual professional development review I highlighted the need to

develop my knowledge further in this area. I subsequently organised for attendance in a

A1
training course in the subject which I successfully completed.
E4

UK-SPEC
As well as the technical documentation for the project, I was responsible for the completion Ref

of various health and safety and maintenance strategy reports. These documents included

the Hazardous Areas Assessment in line with the requirements of DSEAR, the Confined

Spaces Assessment, Noise Assessment, Odour Assessment and the Plant Maintenance and
E1;E2
Lifting Strategy.

As part of the client requirements I contributed to the Project Design Review meeting by

discussing the issues and reasoning behind the design, clarifying details and decisions to
D1;D2
the project team and the client. I also attended the HAZOP meeting where I contributed
B3
by describing the process of the works to the client and answering any questions by site

operators to alleviate any safety concern in the proposed process and operation of the

plant.
E2
For the Project Manager to monitor the costs associated with the project, I ensured that

my input was always recorded on timesheets to allow transparency in the hours worked.

My experience gained on the ABC Water Treatment Works project was applied throughout
C2
a number of projects undertaken through Xx Ltd where I again was the Lead Mechanical

Engineer. It was a challenging and rewarding project to be involved with and one where I

have since had the opportunity to see the designed plant in operation, providing a lessons

learned exercise highlighting areas that can be implemented into, or omitted from future

design projects.
B3
2.2 Lead Regulations Compliance Programme

The Lead Regulations Compliance Programme was a XYZ managed project led by Xx Ltd.

My role within the project was as the Lead Mechanical Engineer responsible for the

mechanical elements associated with the project.

The project involved the completion of the outline design for CAPEX 2 estimating of

Phosphate Dosing Systems for twenty five sites highlighted by 123 where plumb solvency

control was required in the sites respective distribution systems. The project also included

the design and development of a Standard Phosphate Dosing Skid suitable for application

across the whole portfolio.

Sample IEng PRR

UK-SPEC
I was involved from the outset where I contributed to the Project Start-Up Meeting during Ref

which I was able to clarify the scope with the Client and recommend/confirm the

mechanical documentation required for outline design cost estimating. A plan was agreed
D1
with the client for the project implementation, identifying areas that may affect the project
D2
progress including the development of the Standard Phosphate Dosing Skid and access to

existing sites.
C1
Following the Project Start-Up Meeting, I was able to highlight to the Project Manager the

need for further Mechanical and Electrical Engineering resources to ensure the deliverables

would be completed to program with the required detail. I was also able to contribute to

the development of the project delivery program with the rest of the project team, allowing
C3
the project to be managed effectively.

The development of the Standard Phosphate Dosing Skid was key to the delivery of the

whole project portfolio. I organised and attended site visits to existing Client Assets where
C1;C2
Phosphate Dosing Systems were already in place. This encouraged client feedback into the

Standard Design by advising on previous successful installations and highlighting potential

C2
improvements for incorporation into the Standard Design both from a Technical and Health

& Safety perspective. As well as encouraging the involvement of the client, this was an
B2;E3
opportunity to broaden my own knowledge base.
B1;C3
Following the site visits I was involved in developing and presenting recommendations to .

the client for the standard design process.

A1;A2

I was then responsible for the completion of the mechanical design documents for the
B3;D2
Standard Phosphate Dosing Skid, including the Plant & Equipment Schedules, Process &

Instrumentation Diagrams and standard data sheets.

With the project team I also visited a number of sites to determine the most suitable
B1
location for new plant integrating into an existing treatment works, as well as making an

assessment of the existing systems on site to determine any further work required.

Site visits were completed with due diligence given to Health & Safety as well as site

B2;B3

protocol in line with water hygiene requirements for which I received client accreditation
Sample IEng PRR
training.
UK-SPEC
After each of the site visits, I was responsible for the completion of the mechanical Ref

deliverables specific for each site; detailing the proposed scope of works for the client’s
E1;E4
review.

I was also responsible for completing the site risk register documentation, and contributing

to the site health and safety risk assessments.

Due to large number of sites requirement surveys, and the tight project timescales, I co-
B2;D2
ordinated with the other Mechanical & Electrical Engineers for the project, providing

guidance on the required work activities and checking the documentation output. E2

The Lead Regulations Compliance Programme was an example of a project where I

D1;D2
developed my technical managerial competence, and was successfully completed on time
D3;C2
and to a standard which saw the client give positive feedback to Xx Ltd.
C3

2.3 XYZ Water Treatment Works

XYZ Water Treatment Works was a project where Xx Ltd were employed by the Main

Contractor to complete the detail design.

In addition to the responsibilities undertaken in the two previous projects as the Lead

Mechanical Engineer, my further responsibility included the completion of the project time

estimate to build a tender cost for the mechanical and electrical design element of the

works. I also produced a programme for the completion of the design deliverables, liaising

with the Project Electrical Engineer and Project Manager to determine availability of

resource and agree confirmation of completion dates for the mechanical deliverables.
C2
As well as being responsible for completion of the mechanical design, for this project I took

on the role of co-ordinating the Mechanical & Electrical design for the Xx Ltd team. As the

main point of contact with the Main Contractor for the Mechanical & Electrical Design, I
C1;C3
ensured that a weekly progress report was issued detailing the progress of the Mechanical

& Electrical output. This provided transparency in the progress of the work with the Main

Contractor and allowed evidence for building purposes.

The XYZ Water Treatment Works Project significantly enhanced my technical managerial
D1
and leadership skills as an engineer, allowing me to co-ordinate project activities,

resources and budget to promote effective project implementation.
