MICAS, SEBAS E MUCHICOS
No

12 - COMPARATIVOS E SUPERLATIVOS DE ADJETIVOS
A - Comparativo de igualdade:
as + adjetivo + as
John is as tall as his cousin. Mary was as happy as Jane.
O John é tão alto quanto seu primo. A Mary estava tão feliz quanto a Jane.
Observe:
so...as, em vez de not as...as.
John is not as tall as his cousin.
(três vezes), four times (quatro vezes) etc.
My building is twice as high as this one.
sentido, à estrutura as ... as.
Henry is as old as Andrew. Henry is the same age as Andrew.
imperativo, o TO do infinitivo é eliminado.
Stop that noise!

PARTE 1
Nesse caso, a
Ex.: “Televison is the most popular means of communication”.
palavras contidas no texto.
or, then, however, thus, in addition, so, in spite of, etc., ou mesmo frases e até um parágrafo
inteiro.
23
LEMBRETES E MACETES

TEXTO 1
Computer System
A typical computer system consists of a central processing unit (CPU), input devices, storage
devices, and output devices. The CPU consists of an arithmetic/logic unit, registers, control section,
and internal bus. The arithmetic/logic unit carries out arithmetical and logical operations. The
registers store data and keep track of operations. The control unit regulates and controls various
operations. The internal bus connects the units of the CPU with each other and with external
components of the system. For most computers, the principal input device is a keyboard. Storage
devices include external floppy disc drives and internal memory boards. Output devices that display
data include monitors and printers.
34
TEXTO 2
1 Devices that provide for the movement of information between the CENTRAL
2 PROCESSING UNIT of a COMPUTER system and the external world are called
3 input/output devices, or simply I/O devices. They are extremely important
4 because every computer functions by accepting input and producing output.
5 Input is the control information (programs and commands) that directs computing
6 activities; it also includes the data information (digital numbers, characters, or
7 pictures) that is manipulated by the computing activities. Output is information
8 produced as a result of computing activities.
9 Because of the wide variety of forms of information, many types of I/O
10 devices are used. They may be characterized according to the information
11 medium, the hardware technology, the speed of information transfer, and the
12 amount or capacity of information involved. Many devices support the movement
13 of information between a storage medium and processor. Others support
14 communication between the computer system and the external world of
15 noncomputer devices.
16 Storage-oriented devices store information in computer-readable form.
17 Information is placed in storage with the intent of later inputting the same
18 information for further processing. Nonstorage devices are used when it is not
19 necessary to move the same information both into and out of the computer. The
20 information is transformed by the devices from a computer-readable form to a
21 form readable by a person or another machine.

TEXTO 3
1 I/O refers to any operation, program, or device whose purpose is to enter data into
2 a computer or to extract data from a computer.
3 We use the term I/O to distinguish noncomputational parts of a program from other
4 parts that are strictly computational, or to distinguish certain devices from other devices.
5 For example, a printer is an I/O device, whereas a CPU is a computational device.
6 All computer applications contain both I/O and computational parts. A word-
7 processing system, for instance, contains I/O components (for entering, displaying, and
8 printing text) as well as non-I/O components (for checking spelling, searching for words,
9 and so on).
10 Input Devices
11 These devices enable a computer user to enter data, commands, and programs
12 into the CPU. The most common input device is the keyboard. Information typed at the
13 typewriter-like keyboard is translated by the computer into recognizable patterns. Other
14 input devices include light pens, which transfer graphics information from electronic
15 pads into the computer; joysticks and mouses, which translate physical motion into
16 motion on a computer video display screen; light scanners, which "read" words or
17 symbols on a printed page and "translate" them into electronic patterns that the
18 computer can manipulate and store; and voice recognition modules, which take spoken
19 words and translate them into digital signals for the computer. Storage devices can also
20 be used to input data into the processing unit.
21 Output Devices
22 These devices enable the user to see the results of the computer's calculations or
23 data manipulations. The most common output device is the video display terminal
24 (VDT), a monitor that displays characters and graphics on a television-like screen. A
25 VDT usually has a cathode-ray tube (CRT) like an ordinary television set, but small,
26 portable computers may use liquid crystal displays (LCD) or electroluminescent
27 screens. Other standard output devices include printers and modems. A modem links
28 two or more computers by translating digital signals into analog signals so that data can
29 be transmitted via telecommunications.

______________________________________
1 Bus, in computer science, is a set of hardware lines - wires - used for data transfer
2 among the components of a computer system. A bus is essentially a shared highway
3 that connects different parts of the system - including the microprocessor, disk-drive
4 controller, memory, and input/output ports - and enables them to transfer information.
5 Usually supervised by the microprocessor, the bus is, in computers such as the Apple
6 Macintosh and IBM and compatible models, specialized for carrying different types of
7 information. One group of wires (actually, traces on a printed circuit board), for example,
8 carries data; another carries the addresses (locations) where specific information can
9 be found; yet another carries control signals to ensure that the different parts of the
10 system use their shared highway without conflict. Buses are characterized by the
11 number of bits they can transfer at a single time. A computer with an 8-bit data bus, for
12 example, transfers 8 bits of data at a time, and one with a 16-bit data bus transfers 16
13 bits at a time. Because the bus is integral to internal data transfer and yet computer
14 users often need to add extra components to the system, most microcomputer buses
15 allow for expansion through one or more expansion slots (connectors for add-on circuit
16 boards). Such boards, when they are added, make an electrical connection to the bus
17 and effectively become part of the system.

VIRUS
1 Virus, in computing, is a piece of software that can attach itself to a program, often
2 in the computer's operating system, and then might replicate itself onto other programs
3 with which it comes in contact, without the user being aware of it. Some viruses are
4 relatively harmless, but others can damage or destroy data. They are written by
5 anonymous programmers, often maliciously, and are spread from one computer to
6 another by way of exchanged disks or programs sent through telephone lines. Antivirus
7 software can be used to detect and destroy well-known viruses, but new viruses
8 continually appear and these may bypass existing antivirus programs.
9 Computer viruses may be programmed to operate on a particular date, such as the
10 Michelangelo Virus, which was triggered on 6 March 1992 (the anniversary of the
11 birthday of Italian artist Michelangelo) and erased hard disks.
12 Logic bomb, consists of a set of instructions entered into a computer's software.
13 When activated, it takes control of the computer's programs
14 Worms are self-contained programs that enter a computer and generate their own
15 commands.

ASSEMBLY LANGUAGE
1 Low-level computer-
2 programming language
3 closely related to a
4 computer’s internal
5 codes. It consists chiefly
6 of a set of short
7 sequences of letters
8 (mnemonics), which are
9 translated, by a program
10 called an assembler, into
11 machine code for the
12 computer’s central
13 processing unit (CPU) to
14 follow directly. In
15 assembly language, for
16 example, “JMP” means
17 “jump” and “LDA” means
18 “load accumulator”. Assembly code is used by programmers who need to write very fast
19 or efficient programs.
20 Because they are much easier to use, high-level languages are normally used in
22 preference to assembly languages. An assembly language may still be used in some
23 cases, however, particularly when no suitable high-level language exists or where a very
24 efficient machine-code program is required.

HIGH-LEVEL LANGUAGE
1 Unlike low-
2 level languages,
3 high-level
4 languages are
5 relatively easy
6 to learn
7 because the
8 instructions
9 bear a close
10 resemblance to
11 everyday
12 language, and
13 because the
14 programmer
15 does not require
16 a detailed
17 knowledge of
18 the internal
19 workings of the
20 computer. Each
22 instruction in a high-level language is equivalent to several machine-code instructions.
23 High-level programs are therefore more compact than equivalent low-level programs.
24 However, each high-level instruction must be translated into machine code - by either a
25 compiler or an interpreter program - before it can be executed by a computer. High-level
26 languages are designed to be portable - programs written in a high-level language can be
27 run on any computer that has a compiler or interpreter for that particular language.

THE NET
1 Internet
2
3 The Internet is a global, on-line computer network connecting governments,
4 companies, universities, and many other networks and users. The service offers
5 electronic mail, conferencing and chat services, as well as the ability to access remote
6 computers and send and retrieve files. It began in the late 80s and by late 1994 was
7 estimated to have over 40 million users on 11,000 networks in 70 countries, with an
8 estimated one million new users joining each month.
9 The Internet began with funding from the US National Science Foundation as a means
10 to allow American universities to share the resources of five national supercomputing
11 centres. Its numbers of users quickly grew as access became cheap enough for
12 domestic users to have their own links on personal computers. By the early 1990s the
13 wealth of information made freely available on this network had increased so much that
14 a host of indexing and search services sprang up to answer user demand. Such
15 programs as Gopher, Archie, Veronic, and WAIS (Wide Area Information Service)
16 provide such services through a menu-based interface; the World-Wide Web uses
17 hypertext to allow browsing.
18
19 World Wide Web
20
21 The World Wide Web (WWW or W3) is a collection of globally distributed text and
22 multimedia documents and files and other network services linked in such a way as to
23 create an immense electronic library from which information can be retrieved quickly by
24 intuitive searches. The Web represents the application of hypertext technology and a
25 graphical interface to the Internet to retrieve information that is contained in specially
26 formatted documents that may reside in the same computer or be distributed across
27 many computers around the world. It consists of three main elements. The Hypertext
28 Markup Language (HTML) comprises the programming codes, or tags, that define fonts,
29 layouts, embedded graphics, and links (hyperlinks) to other documents accessible via
30 the Web. The HyperText Transfer Protocol (HTTP) defines a set of standards for
31 transmitting Web pages across the Internet. The Universal Resource Locator (URL) is a
32 standardized naming convention for identifying a Web document or file, in a sense the
33 address of a link. The result is called the Web because it is made up of many sites, all
34 linked together, with users traveling from one site to the next by clicking a computer's
35 pointing device on a hyperlink.
36
37 Hypertext
38
39 The hypertext is a technique for organizing computer databases or documents to
40 facilitate the nonsequential retrieval of information. Related pieces of information are
41 connected by preestablished or user-created links that allow a user to follow associative
42 trails across the database. The linked data may be in a text, graphic, audio, or video
43 format, allowing for multimedia presentations; when more formats than text are linked
44 together, the technique is often referred to as hypermedia. Hypertext applications offer a
45 variety of tools for very rapid searches for specific information; they are particularly
46 useful for working with voluminous amounts of text, as are found in an encyclopedia or a
47 repair and maintenance manual.
