1. Explain the causes and the results of the French and Indian War.
Think About:
• why England and France were rivals in North America
• the territories that were lost and gained by each side
• how the outcome of the war affected Native Americans

2. The Continental Army suffered serious setbacks at the beginning of the Revolutionary
War. How were the Americans able to turn things around and defeat the British?
Think About:
• military leadership
• foreign assistance
• strategic mistakes made by the British

3. Why did the Articles of Confederation prove inadequate for governing the new
nation?
Think About:
• national unity under the Confederation
• the lack of an executive branch
• economic issues such as taxation and national debt
• how the Confederation dealt with other nations

4. Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson were brilliant advocates of very different
visions of what America should be. Compare and contrast their visions.
Think About:
• the role of a strong central government versus state and local governments
• who should play a leading role in government
• how best to protect individuals’ rights
