ASSIGNMENT 10
Write answers to all questions and submit during the week starting on 02/08/2010

1. For each of the following functions, find all stationary points and determine their nature if possible.
a. 𝑧 = 𝑥 2 + 4𝑥𝑦 + 𝑦 2 − 6𝑦 + 1
b. 𝑧 = 𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 2
− 2 𝑥2 − 𝑦2
2.
𝑥2
Let 𝑓 𝑥, 𝑦 = ∀ 𝑥, 𝑦 ≠ (0,0)
𝑥2 + 𝑦2

For this 𝑓(𝑥, 𝑦), obtain the first degree and the second degree Taylor polynomial at 2,3 .Use those
two polynomials to approximate 𝑓 1.98,2.99 . Calculate the error for each case and comment.

3. i. Show that the equation of the tangent plane to the ellipsoid

𝑥2 𝑦2 𝑧2 𝑥𝑥0 𝑦𝑦0 𝑧𝑧0

+ + = 1 at the point 𝑥0 , 𝑦0 , 𝑧0 is given by + 2 + 2 =1
𝑎2 𝑏 2 𝑐 2 𝑎2 𝑏 𝑐

ii. Let 𝑓(𝑥, 𝑦) be a real valued bivariate function. Prove that if lim 𝑥,𝑦 →(𝑎,𝑏) 𝑓(𝑥, 𝑦) exists. Then it must
be unique.

4. An object of mass m is fired vertically upwards with initial velocity 𝑣0 , with the intention that it will
escape the pull of gravity and escape from the earth. Suppose that the gravitational force 𝐹 on the
object at an altitude of 𝑕 above the surface of the earth is given by

𝑚𝑔𝑅 2
𝐹= ,
(𝑅 + 𝑕)2
Where 𝑅 is the radius of the earth.
a. Let 𝑣 denote the upward velocity of the object at time 𝑡 . Use Newton's law of motion to show that.
𝑑𝑣 𝑔𝑅 2
=− .
𝑑𝑡 (𝑅 + 𝑕)2
b. Rewrite the differential equation as one with 𝑕 as independent variable.
c. Solve the new differential equation in part b.
d. Find the smallest value of 𝑣0 such that 𝑣 is never equal to zero at any time 𝑡.

5. A 10 kg mass is attached to a spring, stretching it 0.7m from it’s natural length. The mass is started in
motion from the equilibrium position with an initial velocity of 1m / sec in the upward direction. Find
the subsequent motion, if the force due to air resistance is -90 𝑥N.

6. A steel ball weighting 128 kg is suspended from a spring, where upon the spring is stretched 2m from
it’s natural length. The ball is started in motion with no initial velocity by displacing it 6m in above the
equilibrium position. Assuming no air resistance find an expression fort the position of the ball at any
time t and the position of the ball at t   / 12 sec
