Before Orange Coast College was constructed,

the land was used as the Santa Ana Army Air Base.
Formation of our beloved college began in
October 23, 1941 as construction of our earliest
buildings took place. The college was founded in
1947 and its first set of classes opened in the Fall
of 1948 with an enrollment of 500 student for
opening day. Today, most of the buildings that were
originally built in the 1940s are still present.
Campus monuments still also exist like the Clock
Tower in the main Quad area and the Science Special Thanks to our Kiwanis
Building brass sphere. The campus also had Advisor Jeff Dimsdale for pro-
viding us with this history of
different student life activies like Pirates Day and our college and how it got
the donkey basketball game. Much has changed started. Pictures are credited

Happy Holidays OCC Pirates!
DANIEL
HA
I hope you all had a fantastic end of your Fall Semester! I’m sure you all did great
and are ready to move onto the NEW YEAR!! :D Oh boy, there is lots to talk about
but only so much space in this newsletter to take up! Okay, I’ll just hit the key
points. Let’s recap what we’ve done recently and look into the near future! :D
Fall Training Conference 2010 - Seriously, OCC, you all repped it so hard! Your
club brought so many energetic and enthusiastic members! I was so happy to
see and meet your new members and I really hope you all had as amazing of
CNH DISTRICT Governor
a time as I did. Congratulations, once again, on your T-Shirts! That’s two years
in a row that you’ve placed within the Top 3 out of over 30 submissions so
take lots of pride in that! In the upcoming weeks/months, the District will be
putting on multiple large-scale events, so do look forward to attending as many
as you can! Up first will be the District Large Scale Service Project, South located in
San Diego, CA. This will be in conjunction with Kiwanis Midyear South and there
will be tons of service, leadership, and fellowship experiences going on! Along
with DLSSP, there will be the Candidates Education Session which will give tips to
anyone who is interested in running for the next District Board, so if you know of
someone who is planning on running, this would be essential to their success!
Oops, I’ve taken up a lot of room already, so with that said, I’ll end this blurb here!
If you have any questions about ANYTHING please don’t be shy!

Hello Orange Coast College!!! :)

PHILLIP
CHOW
Thank you so much for being so welcoming, supportive and SPIRITED on my
visit at your last general meeting! It was nice meeting all the new faces while
reuniting with all the amazing members I’ve had the pleasure of knowing! I
loved how your club collaborated together to create a “get well card” for Tim!
That’s one of the many reasons why OCC Circle K is amazing. Even if your club is
the second largest club in Magic Kingdom (OVER 80 MEMBERS!! :)), you still care
about each and everyone of your members as an important individual. Keep MAGIC KINGDOM Lt. Governor
up the spectacular service, everlasting friendship and exemplary leadership!!!
District Convention (the end of our Circle K year) is only 3 months away!!! Let’s
finish strong and have an amazing year to look back on. I believe in you and as
always, I’m here if you need me.

CHRISTINE
NGUYEN CLUB PRESIDENT

Bonjour OCC Circle K-ers! I can’t believe it’s the New Year already! As we all say good-bye to every exciting moment that
has happened in 2010, we welcome the 2011 year. Throughout the last couple of months, our club has done a lot to
benefit the community. We represented OCC at Crazy Kompetition for Infants South and Fall Training Conference where
we placed an award-winning (3rd Place) Club T-shirt out of our Cal-Nev-Ha District! We have helped clean and serve at soup
kitchens, held a Halloween and Holiday Party for the Boys and Girls Club of the Harbor Area, successfully had our Fall Member
Installation, and much more. By the end of this month, we have surpassed our goal of 60 members as a club to 78
members! Lets break our record-breaking number to hit 100+ members by the end of March 2011! Even though Spring
Semester is around the corner, be prepared to help plan and attend our District Convention 2011 in Burbank, CA, recruit
members at our Club Rush, and fundraise to help our District Fundraising Initiatives. I want to thank everyone who has
been dedicated to serve and lead during our crazy months of events. I want to thank the board for their hard work and
commitment to this club. I want to thank each member for making this club as strong and as great as it is. Without your
hard work and dedication, our club would not be where we are today. So lets inspire. Inspire others to serve and lead
like we all do. Inspire others to make friends throughout each day because who knows - they may become your best
friend, your secret companion, or even a lost family member. Inspire me, you, and everyone around you because truth-
fully, every single one of you inspired me one way or another! Happy New Years! I’ll see you soon! :)

JONATHAN
CAO-NGUYEN EDITOR

It’s time for another issue of The Squeeze! Fall 2010 Semester came to a closure and I
couldn’t have been happier! I hope that all of you did well on your finals! Time have been
flying by and its amazing at the fact that we are about to start our month long winter
vacation. Before we start our fun month of January, we need to look back since our last
newsletter issue. Our club sent huge amounts of members to all of our service projects and
district events like CKI South and Fall Training Conference! I am shocked at how much our club
has changed since we only had 45 members last year, but I couldn’t be more proud at what we
accomplished in these past few months. As my term on board is coming to a close, I know that
these next few months will be a roller coaster ride for our entire club since we are now on the
road to District Convention! I hope you enjoy looking back as these next few months filled with
service and socials as we prepare ourselves as we head onto the road to District Convention! Remember to contin-
ue writing articles, taking pictures, and enjoying yourselves as we continue writing these memories into the history
books.

Happy reading and enjoy the rest of your month long vacation! =)

AN EMOTIONAL EVENT by Shelby Paisley

Light the Night Walk has been the most emotional event I’ve been to so far. We
had a lot of OCC Circle K Member show up, which was really great! Toward the
beginning, they didn’t really have much to do for all of us. I’d say the majority
of our members worked at a balloon stand the whole time, handing out coor-
dinating balloons to each walk participant. Red for supporters, white for survi-
vors and gold for those who had lost someone to the blood cancers, Leukemia
or Lymphoma. Before the walk started, there was a remembrance ceremony,
commemorating those that lost their lives to leukemia or lymphoma. Christine,
Kelly, Stephanie and I were assigned to handing out gold balloons to those who
had lost someone. It was incredibly emotional seeing these people who had lost
their loved ones. During that time, one man walked up to Stephanie, when she
asked if he wanted a balloon, he burst into tears and all he said was “My lovely
wife.” It was so hard to hold back tears of my own, as I cannot even begin to
imagine the pain that these people had gone through, how tough it must be
to survive the disease, or to even see someone I love go through what they did
- even if they won the battle. During the race, we got to stand at the sidelines
and cheer on the walkers! We cheered as loud as possible and high-fived all of
the walkers that were willing. It was great seeing the excitement and energy
of those who came to support. It’s a real heart-warming feeling to see people
come out to support other people. It shows that people really do care about and
support one another.

A MAGICAL
This wasn’t the first time that I ever participated in
this magical weekend at the Disneyland Resort. Every
year, the Disneyland Resort hosts the Disneyland 1/2

WEEKEND
Marathon Weekend where attendees can attend the
sports expo with the latest athletic gear or take part
in multiple race events throughout the weekend. I’ve
volunteered at numerous jobs in the past and this
by Jonathan Cao-Nguyen year was extra special because I also did more than
what I expected. OCC Circle K was volunteering on
Friday and Sunday of the event where we helped at the
registration booths and making informational packets
for all the runners. I definitely enjoyed my time meet-
ing the other volunteers and seeing how many people
from across the country take a trip to Disneyland for just
this run! I also loved the meal that they served us for
dinner, it was super delish! Sunday was the day of the
actual 1/2 marathon race where a few of us prepared
the medals to pass our to the runners. The medals were
beautiful and I’m glad that the people who run these

Each job was fulfilling in some way and everyone got a chance
to socialize. It was fun for the most part, with the exception of
the rain. It rained at least three times throughout the event,
but the great thing about adversity is that everyone put in a
lot of effort to make the best out of the worst situations. Some
of us were forced into small areas, forced to cooperate with
the few people in that area, and ended up with a new set of
friends. Overall, it was a fantastic event and I would love to
have an experience like that again.

little late arriving to Goathill Junction Station, which was the main location of the
Pumpkin Patch. OCC Circle K actually got to be one of the first groups of people
to ride on top of the miniature trains to test out how well they worked. Truly, it
was a bonding experience as we did cheers, shouted and waved to passersby, and
organized the arm wave from the front to the back. Subsequently, we returned
to work on setting up the game booths, which consisted of a ring toss with water

bottles and a guess-which-cup game. In addition, some of us help served the hot
dogs and hamburgers, and others gave out a free prize and candy to the children.

FOR THE WIN! by Phil Ly

This past Thanksgiving weekend, the Poison Ivy family had their
first family social—also inviting the Robin’s Robbers family to
join us—for two days of fun and service with a smile: Friday and
Saturday. On Friday and after working the first shift at Someone
Cares Soup Kitchen, we went to Irvine Spectrum for some Black
Friday shopping! There we went around to the various shops—
such as Urban Outfitters, the Apple Store, Macys, and Target—
to see the sweet deals that they had for the day. We ended the
day with a visit to Starbucks for a quick break and then delicious
Chipotle Mexican Grill for dinner! On Saturday, the day began
at Jcao’s house where he taught us how to make spam musubi
(sushi made with spam) and made appetizing spaghetti. While
a few of us were playing video games, the rest of the Poison Ivy
family planned and discussed details on the upcoming United K
Party that we are chairing. Afterwards, we met up with the Robin’s
Robbers family at Downtown Disney where we took pictures
(both individual and family portraits) in front of the giant
Christmas tree and in a brilliantly white gazebo. Before end-
ing the night with dinner at Cheesecake Factory, there was an
exciting photo scavenger hunt that included well-known
monuments and hard-to-find places throughout Downtown
Disney. Congrats to those who won!

CKI South features an array of relay games that brings out everyone’s competitive side as they plan to win it all

CKI SOUTH:
FUN AND GAMES by Stephanie Nguyen
A gloomy day did not ruin one of the best Circle K events of the year: CKI
South in Stanton Park, CA. Orange Coast College gathered together in
the parking lot hours before the event to practice cheers and work out
strategies for all of the events. We all looked great in our newly designed
Joker t-shirts and we were all ready to show off our spirit. Once we stepped
onto the grass at the park, we were immediately faced with the loud cheer
battles of other Circle K clubs. What more to do then to join in? It was great
to see our new members get involved and finally see what we have been
talking about for months. When the competition finally started, OCC split
up in their respected teams. We had three strong teams this year; more
than half were new members! It was great to see our new members par-
ticipate in such a great CKI event and enjoy themselves. People bonded
and got to know each other better through jump roping, transferring ten-
nis balls, exchanging oranges and so much more. We even witnessed one
of the most epic games of Ninja ever seen against UCI and UCLA! To end
things, we had a productive and well-attended Magic Kingdom DCM. It
was great way to end such an eventful day!

In a poll regarding texting, several OCC Circle K students state how many

GROWING STRONGER The Member Installation is the start of something new

AND STRONGER
by Stephanie Nguyen
The Fall 2010 Installation Ceremony was held on October 26th, where members of Orange Coast College’s Circle K mem-
bers dressed up for the special occasion. As the Membership Development and Education Chair, I was finally seeing
everything come together. Gifts from both the club and the family leaders were ready for the members and I was glad
to see so many people be recognized for joining the club. One by one, the new members were called up to the front
and each received a personalized Orange Coast College identification card, a notebook, pen, pencil, and a gift from their
family leaders. Our family system consists of four families of which are Promiscuous Penguins, Poisons Ivies, Joker Face,
and Robin’s Robbers. Thus, each family had their own unique welcome gift for their new family member. It was truly a
rewarding experience for me seeing the new members get installed because of OCC’s history. OCC Circle K started with
only one member just a few years ago and now we have reached staggering numbers. We now have 77 members, but
that number is definitely still growing. We do not plan on slowing down by any means! Thank you to everyone who
helped me with preparations for the Installation, but most of all, thanks to the members! I feel so fortunate to have such
amazing people be part of OCC Circle K! <3
