Tassilaq and Greenland Ice Cap Adventure

FAMILY WEEK TRIP TO EASTERN GREENLAND - TREKKING AND BOATING

6 NIGHTS HOTEL, 1 NIGHT IN TENT

For years we have arranged successful
trips to the Sermiliq/Tassilaq Fjord
Archipelago in Eastern Greenland.
Without exception all our guests have
been amazed by the pristine and natural
world that exists here. We think you will
be too.
On this week long East Greenland tour,
we invite you enjoy the natural marvels of
Eastern Greenland. We do that in style
and use our trekker hotel in Tassilaq as
our starting point for exploring the area.
During this trip you will experience great
hiking and boating in East Greenland
Archipelago and the highlight of the trip
is to venture into the inner fjord system
and then get a chance to get up to the
Greenland Ice Cap. One night is spent in
a camp close to the Greenland Ice cap and
weather and field ice conditions
permitting we will try to get close to the
Ice Cap by hiking up the edge of one of
the feeder glaciers.
This is a trip where you will get a chance
to learn about the Arctic – you will
experience the about geology, Greenland
Flora and Fauna and of course the rich
history of the Inuits as well as Western
Explorers. This area has more grandeur
than most mountain areas anywhere - but
without the masses of tourists. It has the
extraordinary light of the High North and
the best summer weather in Greenland. It
is a remote and breathtaking – but very
doable and safe for any Arctic enthusiast!
We will begin at the small capital of
Tassilaq and explore on foot this lovely

town and its adjacent green valleys. We
will venture out into an Inuit boat across
up the mighty Sermilik Fjord and across it
to the Western side and then end up near
to the Ice Cap at Naktivit. Here we will
establish a cam the closest you can get to
the Greenland Ice Cap. And we will have
a chance to step on this Natural wonder of
the World – one of the most important
temperature regulators of our fragile
Earth and safe keepers against Global
Warming.

experience the best of the Greenland

Day-to-Day Itinerary
Days 1- 2.Home Departure from Canada,
Arrival Tassilaq, Greenland via Iceland.
Leave Toronto and fly to Keflavik,
Iceland. Transfer from Keflavik to
Reykjavik that same morning. Early noon
time flight to Kulusuk Island, Greenland.
From Kulusuk we will board a skiff for a 2
hour (depending on the fjord ice situation)
scenic ride to Tassilaq, small
administrative center of Eastern
Greenland. That evening we will stay at
the best pension in town and get briefed
on the next days of exiting nature
programs.

Day 3. Tassilaq and walk to
Blomsterdalen - or beyond? In the
morning you will visit the local town and
its quaint museum and church and hear
Eskimo tales in the Museum’s sod house.
You then do an easy guided 2- 4 hours
walk ( there are other longer walks as
well) into the beautiful Valley of Flower in
the mountains behind Town. At night we
will enjoy a meal with Greenland special
gourmet food and have a chance to see
local drum dancing in our Guesthouse.

Day 4 . Boat Journey to Naktivit
After a leisurely breakfast , you and your
guide board our boat to head for 2- 4
hours exhilarating ride around the steep
cape of Tassilaq Island and into one of the
largest fjord of Eastern Greenland : The
Sermilik. It is filled with huge icebergs
that break off numerous glaciers feed by
the Greenland Ice Cap – and if we are
lucky we migh even see some whales:
Minke or Grey Whales are often see here.
We continue to Naktivit close to the base
of the Ice Cap. We then set up camp and if
there is time for a afternoon hike – why
not?

Day 5. Trip to the Ice Cap.
That morning our climbing guide will
help you don crampons and rope go upon
the Inland Ice Cap. The slow melting of
the Ice Cap is one of the biggest factors for
potentially changing the climate on Earth.
At night we can hear the cracking of the
icebergs – as they slowly disintegrate in
the warmer summer. Jokingly we call
them “the Greenland Coastal Artillery!”
In the afternoon we board our skiff again
and set course towards the stunningly
beautiful on the Eastern side of Sermilik.
Pehaps here a chance to sip at hamlet of
Tinit and have a cup of coffee with the
locals. After a very long day we arrive
back in Tassilaq.

Day 6- 7: August 14- 15 – These two days
are spent whale watching and possible
glacier dog sledding in the Tassilaq Area –
all depending on the weather and snow
conditions.

Day 8. Back-up day and possible hike to
Soemandsfjeldet. If we indeed did arrive
back to Tassilaq (we might be delayed due

packs and do a guided hike 3 - 5 hours up
