Present Situation , Vision , and Trends
Popular cultures constitute a rich
repertoire of concepts , activities, customs ,
traditions, and practices which human
cultures in their diverse frames of
reference have accumulated and
maintained over centuries . Modern Man
still finds resort in popular cultures in
many of his/her actions and daily affairs.
Popular cultures, being centuries-
long legacies, have proved influential in
sustaining identity and resisting
contamination and the sweeping currents
of globalization . This has been attributed
to the fact that such cultures are nurtured
by peoples who have trust in the
educational values and ethics such cultures
sustain and in the semioticity of their
content . On such a view, a popular culture
assumes the role of a national culture ,
representing those values , ideals , and
symbols which a nation prizes. Being so,
artists and great novelists resort to their
cultural repertoire , deriving inspiration
and injecting thought in their outstanding
works which they dedicate to expose
injustice and dictatorship, and to voice
aspiration for freedom.
