Text A

British teenagers spend most of their time at school. They take between five and ten subjects, which
means a lot of studying. These days they are spending more time on homework than teenagers ever
before. Forget watching TV, teenagers in Britain now spend on average nearly three hours on homework
after school. Students in Britain can leave school at sixteen. This is also the age when most students take
their first important exams, the GCSEs. Visit almost any school in Britain and the first thing you’ll notice
is the school uniform. When there is more than one school in a town, school uniform can make the
difference between schools. Although a school uniform has its advantages, most teenagers are tired of
wearing it and often try to hide it when they are travelling to and from school. Teenagers in Britain, like
in many other western countries, worry about their looks and their weight. Two-thirds of girls in Britain
are on a diet, although only one in eight of them is really fat. Like the teenagers all over the world, British
teenagers love to chat. The mobile phone is essential for most of them. More than ninety per cent of
twelve-sixteen year old teenagers have a mobile phone. Many experts believe that mobiles stop teenagers
from spending money on cigarettes and sweets. British teenagers like to spend time on the computers too.
They spend more time on the computers than European or American teenagers. They also use facebooks
and chatrooms to make new friends. And one more thing: music is the number one interest of British
teenagers. But they certainly don’t all like the same music.

Text B

Thomas Edison was born in a small town in the state of Ohio, USA, in 1842. The time in which he lived
was an age of invention and Edison became the hero of that age. When he was a boy, Edison was not a
good student. His parents took him out of school and his mother taught him at home. When Edison was
ten he built his own chemistry laboratory for which he was able to buy materials by selling sandwiches
and newspapers on the local trains. Edison's work as a salesboy at the railroad introduced him to the
telegraph, and soon with a friend, he was building his own telegraph set. Afterwards, in 1863, Edison
became an expert telegraph operator and left home to work in various cities. In 1869, when Edison
arrived in New York City, he was poor and owed money to people. Then he found a job with a small
company where he became interested in the use of electricity. At that time Edison hoped to invent new
ways for people to use electricity. Before Edison started this work, other inventors had been
experimenting with electric lights for many years but without any results. Edison spent over a year testing
more than a thousand different materials and, when he finally succeeded, his invention proved that
electricity would be the future light of the world. For more than fifty years Thomas Edison was the
world's leading inventor and was named "Wizard" for his inventions. His inventions changed our way of
living. He designed the central power station which became the model for the first public electric plant in
New York City providing electric power for thousands of homes and businesses. The electric bulb, which
Edison invented, is used in all families. Edison received many honours during his life for his

Formula One Champion to take driving lessons

Three times Formula One racing champion, Nelson Piquet senior, had to start a driving course to
avoid losing his license. Piquet is one of the three Brazilians to have won the world championship - he
triumphed in 1981, in 1983 and in 1987. Nelson Piquet has been at the wheel since he was fourteen.
However 40-year experience did not save Piquet and his wife Viviane from retaking driving lessons. Both
of them had exceeded the limit of twenty points allowed in one year on a license. There's nothing quite as
humiliating as having to take fresh driving lessons when you've been a Formula One Champion three
times. But Nelson Piquet and his wife Viviane were obliged to take the driving awareness course because
of repeated speeding and parking offences.

The couple had to attend a week of lessons to learn good and safe driving conduct and then pass an exam.
The classes in the Brazilian capital, Brasilia, covered careful driving, first aid and the rules of the road.
Piquet acknowledged that everyone had to learn from their mistake. “I got fine tickets for all kinds of
reasons, including parking where it was not allowed to park”, he told the Brazilian media. The former
racing champion said that he and his wife would make good use of the driving course. Piquet, one of the
best known racing drivers to come from Brazil, has regularly been seen driving at high speed around the
streets of Brasilia in high performance sports cars. Unlike Nelson Piquet senior, who did not follow his
father’s career of a successful politician, his 21-year-old son, Nelson Piquet junior, is a promising test car
driver for the Renault Formula One team.

A was already a famous racer.

A. because of her husband.
B. because she was bad at driving.
C. because she didn’t mind the speed limit either.

A. cautious driving and first aid.
B. first aid, cautious driving and traffic signs.

What are sharks?

Sharks are a type of fish. Scientists have found over 340 different species of living sharks, and fossils that
show sharks have been swimming around the world’s oceans for 430 million years. They are of course
best known for attacking and eating humans, but in reality most sharks are harmless to men. What
happens is that every year there are a small number of horrific attacks on swimmers and surfers. These get
a lot of coverage in media. As a result when people hear the word shark they think – danger.

Why do sharks attack people?

Sometimes it’s a mistake; sharks actually think they’re biting a fish or a seal. That won’t improve your
mood if you’re the person getting bitten, but it might explain why most shark attacks are non-fatal. They
take a bite, don’t like it and swim off. Other attacks happen when humans stray into an area of the sea that
the shark considers its own. The shark hits back to defend its territory. Cases when a shark specifically
targets a human are very rare, George Burgess of the University of Florida has estimated that this only
happens about once a year.

Should I be scared of sharks?

Probably not. You are more likely to be killed by a lightning strike or a bee sting than by a shark attack.
Attacks are extremely rare and most are not life-threatening. Sharks attack about 50 – 75 people each
year worldwide and cause around eight deaths. But that’s a very low number compared to the hundreds of
millions of hours people spend swimming in the sea. Many of the deaths and injuries could have been
avoided by following simple rules that reduce the risks from sharks. If anyone should be scared, it’s
actually the sharks. Every year humans kill millions of them for their fins, meat and skin. Some species
are close to extinction because of hunting.

0. Scientists are sure that sharks have lived for millions of years because
A. there are hundreds of various types of sharks.
B. scientists found remnants of them.

D. various tests proved that.

53. The writer is sure that sharks

A. one reason.
B. two reasons.
